Daniil Trifonov performs Chopin - 12 Etudes op. 25 at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition (May, 2011, Tel Aviv).
Since its inception in 1974, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition is one of the foremost Piano Competitions in the world. Arthur Rubinstein, who gave his blessing to the competition, headed the jury of the first two competitions (1974 & 1977).
The competition, is held every three years in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Trifonov is one of the only pianists, who is able to give importance to all the voices. If you are hearing to the bass or to the hidden middle voice, he always give a sense and creates long lines. Even in Chopin's etudes, which are technically so challenging.

Some of the freest, most elegant, sensitive, individualized playing of these etudes I've ever heard in sixty-odd years of listening. It's as though he were born to play Chopin. He even LOOKS a great deal like Chopin, albeit a sturdier version. Another of many wonderful artists playing before the public today. Beautiful. I was so glad seeing this man winning the Tchaikovsky competition. He really deserved it. In my opinion he also was the true winner of the Chopin Competition - he is worlds apart from Avdeeva or Wunder in his musicality: he really feels the music he is playing and becomes a part of it. you can hear and see this. At the same time his interpretations are always honest and heartfelt, without any unneccessary exaggerations. He appears with an amazing modesty also.

From the moment he began - not even 55 seconds into the performance - I knew I was in the presence of greatness. The first etude was extraordinary alone. So much so as to eclipse even Rubinstein. The F minor was of wings tipped of silver. Each etude thereafter was no less beautiful, no less exquisitely conceived. There is such complete accord here between all components . Utterly flawless work! To say even "Bravo" seems harsh in the face of such beauty, but bravo......Bravo!

I think if Fréderic Chopin could hear this amazing performance of his Etúdes - by Daniil - he'd smile through his tears from emotion how wonderfully have been discovered his intentions by this young, amazing poet of piano...his approach to this music is just so personal love affair with feelings written instead of the musical text... Daniil gave completely different colours to Chopin's Etúdes, beyond any performances I heard in my life...mastery at any bar and phrases...

That no.1 always brings a smile to my face. He plays somehow in an unmodernised way, it sounds as though its being played by a genuine romantic pianist in the romantic period. The articulation is not just the typical play as legato as possible, its delicately measured.

Reading some of the criticism below makes me very sad. Why can listeners not just enjoy the wonder of whatever good music is put out? Young Daniil does an exceptional job and I for one can hear the difference between him and some other players. @@onlyfacts3101 they are very demanding as the ”etude” is a piece meant to develope technique. Essentially he shows up and shows that he masters 12 extraordinary difficult techniques. On top of that he shows his mature sense of musicality at the same time. And this is live (imagine the pressure!). The etudea by chopin are very popular because they combine the technical difficulty with musicality, making them pleasant to listen to and practice.

OMG, I felt the anticipation in the pause just before he began to play - and the anticipation was worth it. I was almost in tears of beauty listening to the 1st etude of this group. Aeolian harp is my favourite piece of piano music ever.

Here is youthful and exuberant greatness to experience. Trífonov plays these etudes wonderfully, and thoroughly inhabits them, making each phrase his own, even as they resonate with the stylings of other great players before him. I mean that in a profound way for one so young, because I’ve been listening to and playing these works for many, many decades. I’ve heard it all, yet this young man’s performances made me take interest from the beginning, sustaining that interest until the last note had faded. He makes you forget that these are, after all, etudes. That means they are designed to work out certain technical problems, and every one of them is what you could call... well... hard to play. Chopin was a genius, so he was able to work those etudes into musical ideas rather than mere mechanical studies, but it takes a player who can lose themselves in the music without losing their focus on the technique. It was a total delight to hear Trifonov’s fascination with his own ability to create these lines, these voices that cohere and flow in and out of each other, right there in his hands. In the pursuit of authenticity or tradition we often forget that music is also discovery and awe right there in the moment as you attempt to create life, to pour it right into this complex mechanical device, and you hear it working, the voices congealing into song. This man really gets it, and he makes no disingenuous attempts to hide those emotions he’s generating. It’s refreshing! I hope to hear more of his playing.

Trifonov seems to have a real passion for experimenting with musical textures, gradients and effects. They don't always work well, but his enthusiasm and sensitivity for musical color shows through. He's more musician-artist than technician in this regard.

Oui, il est vraiment exceptionnel, il rend intelligibles des pièces compiquées parce qu'il garde toujours le fil conducteur de la mélodie même quand elle est enfouie comme un petit ruisseau sous la végétation foisonnante des arpèges et des accords.

Give a listen also to Trifonov's Liszt's Transcendental Etudes, Lyon. The reviewer wrote that he thought this young pianist was biting off too much, and then he saw "this guy come on stage in his shirt sleeves," and he thought, "Worse, worse." And then Trifonov started to play and he was blown away.

And what is with Sokolov? Yuya Wang? Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Krystian Zimerman, Kissin. There are many many different very very good Pianists around the world. There are so many masters who know how to revive the music of the great composers through their own personality. This results in very individual own music universes that meets in the one aud resonance and in the other less or not at all. Slowly I can not hear this one the biggest, the fastest, the richest, and that nonsense because that's the reason our planet is going down the drain. When that happens, no pianist will ever be able to play any piece again.
