Why do you use so much floss? Most patterns call for 3 strands, not the full 6. Is it for more coverage?

it looks lovely with 6 or 3 strands, but 6 strands do give more coverage

This is a new style of embroidery. Very popular right now. By using so many stands of floss you achieve greater texture and depth, even more so than if you were doing crewel work with fuzzy yarn. I have embroidered in the more traditional way of using fewer strands for over 57 years now and find this new style very attractive. I like to embroider on garments, but this style will snag, I fear when worn. Wall hangings work better, I guess.
