A little about me:
My name's Minoo, and I'm originally from Iran.
I obtained my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Diploma in England in 1985.
Since then, I've been an English teacher, teacher trainer, and course director in various schools and countries. I'm also a trained confidence coach.
In 2008, my son, Tom, and I set up the Anglo-Link platform for online English studies.
This led to the creation of our popular KZbin channel in 2011.
My passion is to share with you what I've learnt on my own English language journey, both as a student and as a teacher, so that you can become a fluent speaker of English too.

I´m sorry, I don´t understand very well the excercise number 5(11:05) "It seems that 'the' current inflation has hit 'the' unemployed hard", what is the rule? Current inflation and unemployed are not as things in general? Thank you.
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 8 жыл бұрын
The word 'current' makes the noun 'inflation' into a specific one: the inflation we are experiencing now. 'the unemployed' is like 'the elderly', 'the rich', 'the poor'.

@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like my lessons, Hien. 'primary' and 'secondary' are not considered 'ordinal' numbers'. So, it's not those words that determine if we use 'the' or not in this context. It's the word 'school'. 'school' falls in the category of 'home', 'work', 'church' etc.

@AngloLinkEnglish

Hi!The lesson is really great and gives a lot of comprehensive information on this topic. 1.Is there a rule to determine whether an organisation needs the article or not?Or you need to remember all of them? 2. Could you please explain why we put 'the' before 'current inflation' in the exercise #5?
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 8 жыл бұрын
+Vasily Sarantsev Hello Vasily, I'm glad you've liked the lesson. 1. I haven't been able to deduce a rule so far. Like any name, it is a bit arbitrary. 2. You need 'the' here because we're talking about a specific inflation i.e. the current one. If we were talking about inflation in general, we wouldn't need it, e.g. 'High inflation can severely hurt businesses.'

It's the distinction between 'taking part', as it were, in some kind of event there; and describing the building or person's location. "He's at church" suggests he is actually taking part in a service. "He's in the church" is simply describing his location. It's rather obvious English is very much a hybrid language isn't it?

Hi Minoo! You are doing a great job! I follow your lessons. Is two years now. Could you upload a video-lesson about the use of the verb "to do" and one about the imperative form? I can't find those in the play-list... Thank you! Bye. Francesco

+Avv. Francesco Cucci Thank you, Francesco. I'm glad my lessons have been helpful to you. I've made a note of your suggestions. I can't tell you how quickly I'll get round to doing these, as I have a few on my to-do list that I feel I should do first such as 'relative pronouns' and 'connectives'.

Hi, Can you explain why in he sentence " Everest is the highest mountain on Earth " we don't use definite article before Earth. It's the only one like the sun, the moon?
@ahmadyaghiutube
@ahmadyaghiutube 9 жыл бұрын
Irene Fedorova first the earth is one of a kind ,and also it can't be plural for example we can say suns or moons ,but we can't say earths. note: I said " the earth" in my explanation " why?" because it is mentioned for the second time " yours and mine"
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 9 жыл бұрын
+Irene Fedorova 'earth' is a tricky one. As Ahmad says, you will see it with both 'the' and without. If you say 'the earth', you are referring to the one in our solar system. The same goes for 'the sun' or 'the moon'. If you say 'Earth', you are using the word as the name of our planet, the same as 'Mercury' or 'Venus'. You cannot use 'sun' and 'moon' as names because there are other 'suns' and 'moons'.

Thank you for another great and helpful lesson🤗 I've have few questions to ask.. I got these from the book , Wren & Marten... 1: page no#35: we can say "The banyan is a kind of fig tree." But can't say "a kind of a fig tree" why? 2: "The" is used before a common noun to give it the meaning of abstract noun.. will you please explain it a bit more?

Dear prof, might I trouble you for a question ? I Know that point. If I say : I am in Hospital ( meaning I'm a patient o receiving an action ); I'm in the hospital ( I'm a Doctor or giving an action); I am in prison ( I'm a prisoner or convict ); I'm in the prison ( I'm a guard, warden), I'm in school (I'm a student) I'm in the school ( I'm a teacher). About well-known bulding I have to say: The Big Bend, The Marble Arch or Big Bend , Marble Arch ( UK Landmarks) Am I wrong ? Thank You

@AngloLinkEnglish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrea, 1. Yes, you are right about point 1, although when you use 'the', it doesn't necessarily mean that you work in that place. You can also be a visitor. 2. These are names of landmarks, therefore there's no article before them.

Thanks! for the good information about article, I have one confusion we often use "THE" article in between with the sentence as "have a look on the examples below" or sometimes with plural like the students etc. .... is saying "the students" or "of the students" is still correct?

Please correct me if I am wrong, but since EU is a acronym we should use ‘EU’ instead of ‘The EU’?

As we say the two letters separately, it's an abbreviation rather than an acronym. That's why it takes 'the'.

I have a question about centuries. What is the rule? Do we always need to use the? or Wnen your are describing an object and you mentioned it for the first time like you cannot use the: I inherited a sixteenth century painting ? is that correct? I apologize for all the mistakes.
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you use it as an adjective to describe an object, you cans use a / an: This was painted in THE sixteenth century. >> It is A sixteenth century painting.
