Muscles aren't completely silent. Put your ear to the bottom of your forearm, and then clench your fist really hard, then completely release, then clench again. You can hear this "buzzing" or "rumbling" sound coming and going, which is actually the sound of the muscle fibers contracting. It is, of course, nowhere as loud as this artificial hand, but still, pretty cool that you can hear it.

@nibblernibbles32053 жыл бұрын
Beautiful work. Great use of hydraulics, rather than following the herd with electric motors. One of the attractive features of hydraulics is that it takes no power to generate constant force, unlike electromechanical actuators. From the sound of it, the pump stops when the motion stops... so the standby power consumption is zero. The fluid muscle actuators are compliant rather than rigid, and are compact enough to fit inside the arm.

With talks of this being used as a model for prosthetics, it's also important to see if this could be integrated into an existing arm (i.e. attached to an elbow) and how that would function in regards to muscles such as the biceps brachii and how it would attach to the prosthetic forearm. @ here you go trying to knock a man for trying lol. It's not that serious
@johnbenson30243 жыл бұрын
@ well, that’s not entirely accurate is it. I’m a mechanical engineer and I’ve gotta say I’m reasonably well versed in this tech. The range of motion on these joints is extremely human like and the pressure the system needs to flex the muscles isn’t as bad as you’d think because, just like in an actual body, multiple lines work together. You can see this in the contraction and expansion and this concept is vital to getting the pressure generation equipment to a reasonable size and weight. With some software/control improvements, which seems well within the scope of this guys skills and of course is easily done with current computers, this may actually become viable. Counting out what could be possible based on the failures of the past is a short sighted approach.
@acbthr38403 жыл бұрын
@ Hydraulics are remarkably compact you know? That's one of their benefits. You can use tiny equipment to generate enormous pressures. It would be trivial to have a compact high pressure pump driven by an electric motor to power these things. Hell you could even do it with a hybrid air pressure accumulator to save energy
