Artificial Ski Slope Review: COPENHILL

Hi
Just back from a totally awesome new skiing experience. There is a brand new artificial ski slope that has just opened in Copenhagen, Denmark, and I was among the first ones to ski on it. It’s built on top of an 85m high power plant combining environmental values with new tech and outdoor sports. Not only skiing since there are hiking trails, playgrounds and climbing walls integrated in the building. The building itself is a great master peace of modern multifunctional architecture and cost approximately 680 million Dollars to build (wiki).
But it’s not only a ski slope. It’s an experience. It’s like going to the Alps. The lift ticket office, equipment rental, ski shop, ski school, restaurant and after ski bar are all located in the same brand new fancy building and you feel like stepping into any big ski resort premises in for example the Alps. On the area they have for example gondolas and chairs from chair lifts in Saalbach for decoration and for climbing in and out of. Great idea.
The ski slope itself was a fun experience and I can highly recommend it to anybody that is die hard skier like myself but also to anyone interested in starting skiing but never got around to doing it because there were no slopes nearby or did not want to spend a lot of money on a trip to the Alps just to learn the basics. Look no further, here you can learn to ski and once you master Copenhill you are good to go to any real slope of easy to moderate terrain.
What I enjoyed a lot was not freezing. My feet and fingers get cold when I ski, especially when taking instructors clinics or teaching myself. Here it is possible to really dig into those details and try to master whatever you are working on without frost bites.
The skiing itself was also a lot of fun. It feels like skiing on ice crystals, it’s hard and slippery and you lack traction, but after a while you get the hang of it. Be aware that the slopes are a bit narrow. Especially on the lower sections since there are rails and jumps and that sort of stuff so watch out for other skiers above and below you. Well, that’s something you should always do no matter where you ski.
Great fun weekend for me. Please go and visit Copenhill and spend a few days in Copenhagen enjoying sightseeing, bicycling around town, grab something to eat from a nearby smorgasbord and have a few pints of the finest beer in the world, Tuborg.
Note that I visited Copenhill as a regular tourist, payed my own way and had no added privileges. This is as honest as it gets.
reg.
Tom

I am a proud Copenhagener with this slope (and the new metro line too). I wonder how it might perform when there is snow in Copenhagen on that hill, if the snow might grip to the material and work too. Perhaps they might supplement that with a few snow cannons, just in some of the Winter months when Copenhagen is mostly cold and when the natural + snow canon snow doesn't melt too quickly.. from December to like March or so they might fill it up with snow..

Very cool video! I have skied the exact same material (Neveplast) in Italy as part of the proces of choosing the surface material for Copenhill. I am not commercially associated with Copenhill, though. I agree with your review. It does feel like an icy slope, and I was surprised to learn back then that "what works on snow, works on this surface as well", when I tried it. That is pretty awesome! If you ever come to Copenhill again, let me know. /Janus

11:03 I live 45 minutes from Copenhill and I think I'll try it at some point. But I would say that a clear con is the lift-system, it seems difficult and slow. With the hill U design, it seems like a huge missed opportunity not to make an express elevator you can ski directly into to from ground plan and all the way to the top. With those prices, I don't wanna spend 3/4 of the time standing in a shitty slow-moving lift. With an express elevator, you could probably get from the ground plan to the top in like 2-3 minutes maybe even faster.
@Triggerboy62
@Triggerboy62 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a bit of a shame you cannot take the elevator up the hill with ski gear but I found the lifts to be very easy to handle. Not any more difficult that on a real slope. The "magic carpets" are really easy but also the telescope lift.

Triggerboy62 yes but on a real slope I would only use chairlifts and cabinlifts.

I think one of these artificial ski slopes would be great in hot countries, since they can’t ski because there is no snow
@Triggerboy62
@Triggerboy62 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But not only that. In cities like Copenhagen there are no hills nearby so even if it can get cold in the winter, skiing would be impossible. It also makes skiing more accessible to people that cannot afford to fly to the Alps just to try it out. By the way, some car brand made a commercial where they are skiing and snowboarding down Copenhill. How cool is that?

4:37 In before the slope is closed because someone doesn't get off in time and gets pull off the side of the building. That looks very unsafe. How tall is that railing? Half a meter? And no automatic emergency stop from the looks of it.
@Triggerboy62
@Triggerboy62 4 жыл бұрын
The fence you see at the side going up is not the real fence of the building. You can see the real fence up at the top. It must be at least 4-5m high. Normally nobody could climb over. There must have been an emergency stop.

No no find a snow dome. There are many around the uk try one. The plastic it good for ski racing trainnning but when snow is available on your door step plastic Is painful on the skin when you fall. It’s great in twisted broken fingers as well !

@Benzknees 4 жыл бұрын
Having learnt on plastic and then moved onto indoor snowdomes in the UK I agree, although Dave Ryding has proven you can lay the foundations for becoming a v.good slalom ski racer on plastic. But I suspect Triggerboy was there for an experience, rather than promoting it as a good ski venue. You’d go to Snoworld in Landgraff, Netherlands, if you wanted the best indoor skiing in Europe (the only indoor venue to host an FIS event).

@Triggerboy62
@Triggerboy62 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. I was using their rental skis. I don't think that you could carve very well on that surface. I tried but the rental skis were short and soft and the edges were not that sharp and the surface itself felt very slippery so I could not get any good grip. The slope was also not that wide and I think that you would run out of range quickly. I was also not comfortable with going very fast as I did not know what would happen if I fell. Hope this helps.

Thanks for watching. I would not know with a 100% certainty since I did not fall. I think that it would be worse than falling on soft snow but not as bad as falling on ice. I guess you need to wear good protective cloths as you easily could burn your skin from the friction. On snow and ice you can always glide a bit. Here you cant. In your case I would be careful, just like I was, but well worth trying it out.

Theres a tiny one in new milns in Ayrshire don't really recommend it but it's close to Glasgow then Edinburgh has the biggest one called midlothian ski centre its big for a dry slope has a chairlift Aberdeen has one too with such a nice kicker recommend that one highly. Overall i recommend going to Bellahouston, Bearsden and the dome since they are all so close then heading east to Edinburgh then going up to Aberdeen to finish off.
