Artimus Pyle gives his fresh minded, chilling account of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash events, on 24 October 1977 - just 4 days after the accident. This was a radio interview conducted by DeWayne Graham on WAPF-WCCA FM, out of McComb, Mississippi.

I met Artimus a few years ago working back stage, and he is such a gentleman, he was carrying his own gear and setting things up, he really works hard to bring the music to everyone. At the first break me and a friend asked him about the crash and he still misses the ppl he lost that day. He really is a prince of a fellow.

Do you know that he changed his story a few times over the years about the crash? The main one was that he went onto to say that he was shot by a property owner that him and two others came up on whilst looking for help. I have researched to see if this is true or not but you don’t need to search any further than this interview. He says nothing of being shot or even shot at. In fact, he stated that he didn’t sustain any broken bones. Not even a fracture. He’s one truly lucky man.

Artimus Pyle is an absolute top notch, class-A gentleman and although this had to be a difficult interview for him, he spoke absolute truth I believe and gave so much credit to the people in and around the crash area. When he realized he survived, going for help for his friends and band mates was his mission and he accomplished this mission. Artimus Pyle, you sir are a fine gentleman!

⁠the plane crash itself whilst Pyle 18:41 went looking for help, there were also two coastguard helicopters in that area on a training mission and located 18:41 the crash site with a big spotlight and had found the crash site shortly after the plane went down. First responders and volunteers that lived in the area where they went down were dispatched to the scene because they saw the plane just moments before it crashed running on one engine and there’s are other interviews of people who saw the general direction where it was going down and where it went down so people on the ground already knew that a plane had gone down that night. It wasn’t a 5 mile trek either. The plane went down right behind Mr Easleys property and his testimony is proof that they had people on the scene within minutes of the crash and started pulling survivors out, getting the most serious injured on their way asap. Mr Easleys account of the events of that evening is probably the most accurate by any of the first responders and or volunteers.

I was a freshman in HS, hanging out with friends when we heard the news. Artemus has taken a lot of attacks, but here he is, less than 4 full days after it happened, giving a composed interview, NOT playing the Hero. The young man was still in shock. You could hear it & hear his voice start to crack in places. He had tremendous respect for Ronnie, & loved his friends. He did what needed to be done, a true Marine. He ran and found help. Then he led them back. That is what Heroes do, Now Artemus is the last crash survivor, still trying to do the right thing, and make Ronnie proud. God Bless him, long live LS !!!

As a 27 yr veteran in the life saving business (Firefighter-Paramedic), I can pretty much say that I have 'seen it all' and one thing I can't fathom is how some victims like Artimus, Gary, Billy, Allen, Leon and Leslie and the rest can even think about going on. It is incredible how he walked away and was able to get help. A miracle, there is no other way to classify it. Another crew member said in the middle of all the terrifying chaos after the crash Artimus told him to “touch a tree and it will give you energy” so he’d have the energy to survive the crash. This might sound corny, but I can’t help but feel like somehow Artimus’ deep respect for all life and nature manifested some kind of protective energy field around him and possibly others on the plane. It’s a miracle anyone survived considering they went into trees, it makes no sense anyone survived when you see the wreckage. God Bless him and all the survivors and all those who were lost that day.

I thought it was incredibly intrusive and overly focused on the details of the crash - only a few days after Pyle lost his closest friends and nearly lost the others. And yet the interviewer kept pumping him for more and more details about the crash WHILE PYLE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL RECOVERING FROM HIS WOUNDS! This wasn't an interview. It was an ambush. An interrogation. And while Lynyrd Skynyrd fans might have been morbidly curious about the details of the crash, Pyle's privacy and emotional state should have been first and foremost in the interviewer's head. One could be forgiven for thinking this interview was a police interrogation.

@@chuckschillingvideos I can’t possibly know the details behind the interview but I feel pretty certain he was asked beforehand if he wanted to do it. He actually put a lot of the rumors that were bouncing around to rest. That I assume was very important to him. The interviewer was very kind and considerate. He would have just said NO if he had wanted too. His faith carried him thru so much and he still is holding onto that. Gary Rossington who just passed away was also a Christian and his faith too brought him thru many trials. “I ca do all things thru Christ who strengthens me” Phillippians 4:13. 🙏🙏🙏

I played with a tribute band “Tuesdays Gone “ for about 6 years. 2 memories I can share. Played in Greenville SC on the anniversary of the crash and met a few folks that were at the original last show. Watching the the people with eyes closed remembering was heavy. I’ll never forget it. Also Artimus played Free Bird with us in Atlantic City. It’s amazing how it sounded like One More for the Road. The style was evident and unmistakable . That’s all I got. Cheers 🍻

He’s probably the most iconic looking guy along with Ronnie. Just a great representation of the 70’s style era.. clearly the man’s in shock and dealing with it in his own way possible here though. I think hes a tough tough guy, really done beyond what most people I’d imagine could do in such a fatal accident. Really interesting to listen to this after so long and read so many other accounts given years and years later. You can truly analyse and see the passage of time and how it can mend and break. It’s crucial to look after mental health at the end of the day, and I think he’s done an excellent job to be one of the few survivors from something so horrific.

I think the interviewer did a really good job with such a recent raw event. The way he gently coaxed out threads of the story from Artemis was class. And that Artemis was able to be able to think clearly and recall the tragic events. He sounds like a very intelligent bloke. A mate of my Dad introduced me to LS, he was an Australian Vietnam Vet, he told me about the accident and that the drummer was a Marine/Special Forces?? My Dads mate was SAS and I think he respected how Artemis Assessed the situation helped his mates, and got out and searched for help for his mates. I think he saw that as what you’d do in war. I dig hearing his stories and really appreciate the music he introduced me too. I miss him, so does my old man too, it’s hard losing your best mate, I’ve had it happen to me, you don’t get over it. Hearing Artemis talking about losing his mates is sad to hear. Even all these years later. I really like hearing stories from people who know or have met him, and how cool and fairdinkum he sounds. When Lynyrd Skynyrd came back in '87 for the "Tribute" tour I was there. Talk about an emotional night...💕♥️ I can only hope they loved Maryland as much as we loved them...

They were coming to play for us in Baton Rouge. They crashed about :45 minutes or so from my house. I few days before my 17th birthday and the worse birthday I have ever had. This is the first time to here this interview. Year's after they came back to Baton Rouge the first show after. I have seen them 12 different times, a few times before the crash. Lynyrd Skynyrd, and everyone we lost,, will never die. Free Bird is always going to fly. Tomorrow I will be 62, and this hurts more now. Stevie Ray, Jim Croce, if only all of the ones we lost could have lived long as B.B.King, Busy Guy, how much more would they have done for music and us. Geaux Skynyrd 💪🙏❤️👍✌️🤠

I met Gene Odom in 2001. He came through where I lived in Georgia at the time to listen to me and my friend play drums and guitar possibly for a tribute band. Anyways, he was very kind and didn't mind talking to me about Skynyrd a little. I asked him a few questions and there was one answer that I didn't care for. I wasn't upset or anything, just more or less like... ahh come on man, no way. Lol I was basically a kid then and even then I realized that no matter what his opinion was about a certain member or anyone else's in the band about another member... they are regular people just like we are. They didn't get along with each other all of the time and as far as the conflicting stories told by certain members i.e Billy Powell saying in one interview that Cassie died in his and Artemus' arms when later he was called out by Artemus saying how was that when he was gone for help? I'm just saying that they've been through more than most bands as far as tragedy goes sbd and I don't believe that things that Artemus, Billy or Gene said was out of hate or to hurt another member. To me they're the greatest band ever and I've seen many fans get caught up in taking sides and judging certain members and I just think that's wrong because if you're a true fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd then like myself, I remember why I love this band so much. It's because of the music! Not the lawsuits, the rumors or the arguing on TV back and forth over the years between some members. Unless any of us was on tour with them or very close to them then all we know is what we hear in news stories and on TV. Sorry for making a short story long but I'm just trying to say is that no matter what they've said or done, good or bad, they will always be the greatest band in history to me and their music gotten me through some very hard times and I will always be grateful to every member of Lynyrd Skynyrd but most of all, to God because music has always been a very powerful, healing, freeing and a very important part of my life. Thomas is/was a acid head weirdo who's story has changed and includes the bro hand shake hug what ever with the star of the group Right before impact. That story sure is romantic and didn't come till later. That story which is in his movie that he says he gets no money for. ''I gave that story to Hollywood'' That is of course not true. Also he brags that his band plays smaller bars because they are so noble that ''we don't charge 100.000$'' as if they could but choose not to. Even adding ''like other bands.'' He did! He even moved to Israel in the 1980's and lived in Jerusalem for three years before the 1987 Skynyrd reunion!

Why be bitter l rejoice in every situation am in and always thank God for the good and bad. Our lives are in God's hands. God is the creator of us and everything in the world. I choose to be grateful for the goof and bad.

Still remember that crash as it was today. It's still pretty hard to believe that all the original band members besides Artumis Pyle are gone now. Big Lynard Skynyrd fan being I was raised in Florida. At least their all together playing Free Bird in heaven.

so sad , such a great band i had just seen them live in philadelphia, they were coming back to the spectrum, and then this terrible crash , artimus such a good druumer ,he had double bass way before anybody except foghat, hard hitting drummer , just came across this , thanks for sharing ,god bless!

What a load of shit! Went to high school with a guy who used double-bass drums in 1968. At a damn pep-rally! Saw The Frost, Alice Cooper Group, Mountain and many others who were playing double-bass kits before 1970.

He may have been one of the earlier drummers playing with double bass back in the 70’s, but the two earliest rock guys I can think of were Nick Mason of Pink Floyd and Ginger Baker from Cream. One of them saw the other and decided he had to get a second bass drum (can’t remember which) around 1968. By the 80’s double bass had become a conventional thing, but in the late-60’s/early-70’s it was still a new thing (although a few jazz guys were doing it, too-Louie Bellson, I think?). Rock on!

I’m a situation like this, with all the trauma and terror, everyone remembers what happened differently. Pyle was a Marine. So was I, so I know the training he received helped him think as clearly as he obviously did in a chaotic environment.

Chilling when he tells about finding the pilots dead and then he says, "I knew the only way to help them was to go get help. Because I wasn't gonna do it." And what he meant in that sweet mountaineer way was that it was an impossible situation - and then he lists exactly what he needed if they were gonna be helped. I am 50 years older than when Street Survivor's was out. I am still learning more about this over all those years and this is definitely always a haunting story. And I suppose it always will be. Fuckin trees!

I’m thinking the trees broke the fall of the plane. If not for that they may have found an open field or a highway to land on but maintenance hadn’t been done on the plane in awhile. Aerosmith had wanted to rent that plane earlier. Their manager saw the condition of the plane and the pilots drinking. The manager didn’t go for it. The plane was also low on fuel and was looking for a place to land. So many artist have died in plane crashes.

I met the guy in the late 90’s, partied at his place after a gig where he was the sound man for some reason. Met his girlfriend and her daughter there too, nice people. Pretty strange dude at that time. Friendly as hell but kind of scary as well. And he was really pissed at the rest of the band for screwing him, according to him.

Its only 4 days after crash! Artimus is a real unbreakable man, really strong man both mentally and physically. He survived both plane crash and the gun shot by a farmer while he was looking for help. And he is still alive and strong, after nearly half a century later. I am non vegetarian too, I am proud of him.

Cassie is the hardest one for me to think about. Just a really young girl, to die so violently, far from home, not alone, but, I dunno,, it's just really hard to imagine her last few hours. It's all terrible, seemed like they really had a fresh start with Steve, things were going great... then they run outta fuel?? Maddening. It's pitiful, listening to Artimus sometimes, he's so hurt sounding.

Gary had a vision of Dean saving his life. Dean was all ready dead. I believe he saw Dean saving him in a vision. It was Artimus though that really saved him. Gary isn't lying it's just the way he saw it happen.

I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd in Louisville KY on April 23, 1977. I had a couple extra tickets to Led Zeppelin that I sold there, which was just two day's later on April 25, 1977. Lynyrd Skynyrd played at the Convention center downtown, while Zeppelin played at Freedom Hall. Both very good concert's.

I live in McComb and was three years old when this happened . My dad tried to go to the crash with me in the car but the Highway Patrol had the exit blocked. I don't remember anything about it but my aunt has an interesting story about cleaning the mud and blood from their hair at the hospital. She remembers the luggage brought from the plane and one member who was pretty out of it probably on pain meds thinking she was a lady he'd met in Las Vegas.

RIP to those lives lost Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, the pilots, and engineers et al Artimis is a class act and was throughout this terrible tragedy. Despite his inner sorrow, his inherent fortitude, persevered to help his friends as best he could. I recently watched a Mike Huckabee clip from October 2023. He is still distraught over the events of that October night. A tough cross to carry for nearly 50 years. May God Bless you Artimus, as well as all those lives lost.
