bEcaUsE.. (IMHO) although this is a nice gizmo, Blender's gizmos are there to ease the learning-curve to keyboard shortcuts. When modelling, you want to be scaling the *mesh* , in Edit Mode, not inserting the scale into the *Object's* transform matrix. When in Edit Mode, you can (to take just one example) set the pivot to 'Active Element' which gives you many more options than just the sides and corners of your selection's bounding box. The default has the greatest generality, like a chisel. The cage is a convenience, like a mortising-machine. The default should not be a specialism. When folks ultimately learn the chisel well enough, they often can't be bothered with the mortising-machine.
@ChristinaMcKay
@ChristinaMcKay 9 ай бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul I don't know about the shortcut, but you can add the cage to the quick favs, which I have on one of my spare mouse buttons. Using it from the quick favs saves even more time Btw the cage is available in edit mode as well.

@Bruh-zx2mc oh very true. This just allows you to miss out some stages of positioning the 3D cursor. You can also do the same with the origin. But if you're doing it once, not repeatedly, this just seems faster.

huh, neat. also, sometimes i like to have the origin of some model be on the point where generally it will contact something else. good example would be chess pieces. if the origin of the piece is directly on the bottom, then it's very easy to, say, get the height of the chess board, and just set the height of the chess pieces to that directly and now it is EXACTLY ontop of the chess board with no intersection :D
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 8 ай бұрын
Nice trick for the origin. That's especially handy with something like machine tools where if you put the origin of the chess board to its top you can do it even faster with the align tool.

You can also change it to scale from 3d cursor and snap that where you want it to scale from
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 8 ай бұрын
True. But that snap point is unlikely to be exactly on for example the corner and there may not be part of an object to snap to there. Also this is still the same speed as doing that once and then it becomes slower and slower comparatively to use the cursor over this each time you need to change the cursor location. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is always better, just that in some situations it's better.

I imagine it depends how you work. Sometimes scaling from the middle is more convenient so I guess it depends on the use of those designing the program. i'm just happy both options are there

Dont forget to scale from 3D cursor very easy. Shift +rmb anywhere and scale away. You do need to set it to scale from 3D cursor though.

Very true. 👍 But I still find it a bit tricky to get it exactly on a corner for example.

@@ArtisansofVaul Just press shift+Tab to temporarily turn on Blenders snapping equivalent of Mayas press V, C, X to snap to diffeterent parts of a model. And then shift + rmb to place the 3D cursor on any vertex, edge, face, normal depndng on how you've setup your snapping options. So once you've learned the hotkeys involved it's pretty fast. Shift+Tab to get to snapping , shift + rmb to place 3D cursor, shift +Tab to get out of snapping and scale away.

@eddieandersson5570 Agreed its not hugely long. But I think 2 clicks to get the cage working and then click and drag has got to be faster.

@@ArtisansofVaul Sure, but I think there's need to show how much more things we can do with the 3D cursor. When I first came across Blender let's say early 90's or even before that I felt the 3D cursor was such a weird concept. Then I learned Maya and it as you probably know does not have a 3D cursor and I sort of forgot about it. Then as I much later came back to Blender I started to learn about it and now I think it's really good. We use it all over the place even in the graph editor albeit it's then called 2D cursor due to the nature of the GE. So I think you should make a tutorial. in which you explore and show all the uses of the 3D cursor if you haven't done that already.

If you use gizmos for tools instead of single click activation you can get the scale cage by hitting S again.

This could be useful if you use spacebar as search as Shift+space shortcut may not work Open blender and Change Scale to Scale Cage File > Defaults > Save Startup File Happy Blending

🤣To be honest I'm so used to the standard as well. And being able to scale from the centre point is really handy. It's just an option that's there and I think new users of Blender might like it. And I still use it for situations so it's just about knowing irs actually there, which I didn't for ages 😅

😅 I'm not quite sure the point of that comment other than making yourself look silly. This has also been in Blender a long time. I'm sure I could find a video on 3ds Max that is showing something that has been in both programs a long time, thats the what tutorials do... I'd just have more common sense than leaving a comment like that. 🤦
