I don't paint many power swords but I'm so glad I watched this vid and it'll work wonders on some of my NMM work on armour and especially weapons High end, eye popping results, fully revealed process, warts and all - show the wart, fix the wart, wart gone. Real painting, to a high standard with proven accessible technique, but that's not the best part, it's all the whys and the thinking that you get to hear whilst you're seeing that brush doing the job that makes these tutorials next level. Then just as others have said, that idea of testing what the brush is doing on the soft and sharp edges of the base (that there even is a soft and sharp test edge there on every base - why have I never joined the dots on that? How many thousand bases have I seen over the years?), whilst preparing to lunge at the highest stakes proposition of edge highlighting a totally exposing focal point on the model....... that just changed my game. Now I'll never again put brush to model without reassuring myself on the relevant base edge - that's a gift that'll keep on giving forever, and it's a gift of reassurance at the "oh shit - I need a cup of tea before I go for it" moment What a hero, may all your risky, high end conversions turn out better than you'd ever envisioned, and may all your eyes turn out spot on, first time! ;0)

Did you prime your texture pallet Byron? Is so what with?
@ArtisOpus3 жыл бұрын
I did, just with Chaos Black as I normally do😊It's a good way to test coverage of paints because if they go over black they'd go over everything.

I like the effect and I would like to try it, but do you have a technique for making it look like an energized steel blade? As if you can tell its glowing with energy but still looks like a metal sword underneath? I picked up aethermatic blue contrast to try that on a steel color, but do you have tips to help create those glowing areas without being too jarring on a steel color?
@ArtisOpus3 жыл бұрын
One of my fav ways to achieve this is with a careful drybrush of white on the surrounding area, followed by a subtle glaze. You can then gently drybrush highlight closer areas to the source with a highlight colour 😊
@GammaAKF3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtisOpus so similar technique for the spots, just start from steel with white and then use that aethermatic glaze? I was thinking a little darker blue glaze in the non-energized sections might help with a steel effect and get some nice contrast, but I want it to look light and subtle, I'll play around with some glazes after stippling some white sections. Thank you for the advice!

Amazing result! I’ve struggled a little with glazing swords or axes mainly down to running out of patience. I’d love to see if you could use this technique to do a Molten core sword. It would fit in perfectly with my Salamnders, but I’m just not sure where to start.

Thanks, buddy! Great suggestion, I've never painted one myself, so we'd need to do some figuring out😊

Tricky [to explain] question; you showed working on two adjoining surfaces, now when you flip the blade completely over, how do you decide which face will be two-highlights and which, two dark-zones? Do you repeat the same order as on the 'front' or do you reverse it so that you have, say two-highlights meeting an outer edge that ALSO has two-highlights on the 'back'? D'you get me?
@ArtisOpus3 жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, great question, and good explanation! Generally I do mirror, you can shift though, or darken on undersides etc, one of the difficulties of NMM's 'contrast' apprach comes when you have odd numbers of meeting surfaces, diagonals, etc, at this point it's often practicality, rule of cool, or real life reference that you use when you can't follow the nice and easy 'dark next to light, light next to dark' Hope that helps!

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what does the dampening pad do? I've never seen anyone else use one before.
@jessehammil38973 жыл бұрын
With alike moisture in the brush, you can get smother applications. Less chalky.
@ArtisOpus3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Jesse😊The dampening pad releases moisture before, during and after painting and increases quality.

Would love to see how you would paint horse flesh. Im staring a small death rider detachment and would like to to see a redish brown skin tone for the horses.

Would this method work by using black grey and white then putting say tesseract glow over it for a Necron weapon?
@ArtisOpus3 ай бұрын
Absolutely! I would recommend using a non-matte range for the grey and blacks (citadel is fine)

what are equivalents of huldra blue, struggling to find some, not really fussed what brand the alternatives is just something i can get hold of or even better already have
@ArtisOpus3 жыл бұрын
Take any deep blue and mix in a touch of blue and purple ink to increase saturation. You can use contrast instead of inks😊

I am not a WH40k collector, so would like to see your take on some fantasy stuff. Chainmail in particular can look ok with base silver and a wash, but I can't seem to get it looking great.

That's a great suggestion! I've had this issue myself. Will definitely do a video at some point😊Until then try putting some hints of deep blue in your recesses and maybe even some dots of rust and very lightly drybrushing some extra shiny highlights😊

How about a "stellar sword", where the gadient instead of going dark blue to white, goes dark red through orange to yellow to white to blue?

Hey dude, it's our dampening pad, it's designed to help carefully introduce a small amount of moisture to the painting process :). Check this video out, also our 'Airbrush Blends' video, hopefully they'll answer any questions! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oanYimWEjcp8aK8
