I bought your series S brushes a couple years ago and honestly ive never used any except the smallest one, i think this video has just helped my get through my undercoating so much faster as i will now be using the biggest of the lot xD I dont know why i was always using the smallest brush for base coats haha

I had the perfect model to try your second method on, and it worked out perfectly. I used it on the tabard on my Space Marine Chaplain. The only thing I changed was I did my final highlight with lots of small horizontal lines to make the fabric texture, and then I glazed the first red over to knock back the orange colour a bit. I just repainted most of my stormcasts cloaks, they had blue coats and I wanted a more heraldic look so I painted them red and green, with silver armour and gold details. And the first thing I did was to skip the blending I usually do and simply do a base colour of deep green and dark red, and then a Light dry brush of an extreme highlight of almost yellow green and a a yellow red. That made the models really pop and I didn’t spend hours doing the gradual highlights! I think I rewatched half of your earliest videos while doing this, just to get me going 😊

Thank you for another great tutorial - I've been using layering for transitioning with different textures on cloaks but stippling looks like the winner for my army/batch painting moving forward. My suggestion, particularly with the current trend in models that many people are tackling, is different methods for creating OSL. I would very much like a tutorial similar to this one with a few methods, ranging perhaps from beginner friendly to more technical, for creating effective OSL on textured surfaces (like across a face) through to smooth surfaces (like metal panels, or even along something like a set of stairs where the transitions are quite stark). Thanks again for the cracking video and for all the tutorials.

Another great tutorial, thanks for the effort you always put in. A video I'd like to see is something more personal to me and I'm sure will apply for others. My question is how do you deal with hobby disappointment? For context, today I was feeling excited and motivated to jump back on a hobby project that I'd put to one side a while ago. Unfortunately life stuff got in the way which I won't go into. It completely killed my enthusiasm leaving me a frustrated, fed up mess. I know that if I could find the energy to sit and paint that I would forget about everything but I couldn't take that first step. I fully agree, big brushes wins. I used too smaller ones for many years and it's only recently that I stated to use size 5 or 6 for shading and 6-7 for base layers depending of the brands. I have far smoother and uniform layers.

Thar is a good suggestion. I tend to only paint first when I'm using push fit models as I have shakey hands. Application of glue has ruined a few models when I've painted first, but I can achieve a higher level of finish when I paint parts unassembled. It is a dilemma I struggle with on nearly every model.

hey Bearun! (yes I have seen many of your ads :)) afraid I took a leaf out of your book and drybrush my cloaks, you have to go very soft and use many passes but this is the way I do them now, especially "harder" colours like white. administratum grey, watered apoc white then drybrush admin grey, corax white and finally Pro acryl Bold titanium. Lovely smooth transitions as as a bonus all the studs get picked up as well. Would love to see you do Necrons, with your drybrushing they would really pop and with various glow effects on the guns (green, red, blue) Thanks!

Great stuff, perfect timing for skaventide still (looking at unassembled sprues 😅) Tutorial idea: you've a bunch of great tutorials out now, I'd love a meta tutorial on how to select a technique for a specific effect, so like an index video -- eg if wanting to do skin well, brief snapshot of technique, go there for more details. If want awesome scenery with graduated light transitions, stipple approach, more detail here. If want leather texture, try X, small snapshot, watch Y video. Basically a wrap up video, cause when I'm trying to think of a technique to apply and I've forgotten, it can take a while to go through the back catalogue to find what I was after. So super brief summary of the different techniques, and then links to the full tutorials

Great video. Really well explained and the way you do it really makes you feel anybody can do it. A lot of painting tutorials make techniques seem scary and off putting, whereas this makes you feel confident to give things a go. Plus I like it that you make small mistakes. Great video once again! Several things I would love to see you tackle are the following. The first, take a write up from Soper, and apply it to something else. For instance his nmm on the nurgle tank and apply that to some other thing, for instance a skaven bell ;). The second idea is to experiment with your drybrush style combine it with Marco Frisoni oil washes that smooth surfaces again and see how far that can push the quality and finish. And the last one is, experiment with different mediums to see how you can alter paint properties for better results with drybrushing. We love experiments with Byron ;)

I'd love to see more colour theory. How to make smarter colour choices to compliment the main colours we all chose for our armies would be awesome. I'm still a beginner in how to use the different painting methods, but your videos have moved me quite a bit, so thank you for that. However, there is one thing that I haven't really been able to find anywhere on the web, and that is when you choose to paint the individual parts of the miniature like the head, weapons, jump pack, etc. Often I see the simple parts set on a tip of metal or something like that. But how are they fixed so that they don't get blown away when you use spray can primer? And subsequently that they are firmly enough so that you can paint the details? I don't know if you've covered it in a video before. If so, I haven't been able to find it.

I’m still far from perfect but find cloaks one of the very easiest things to paint. Undercoat in a much darker shade than your final colour - so brown or dark red if you want red. Next paint the raised surfaces that would catch light - gradually removing brown from the paint mix and adding more yellow.

This is a very good question, if you want a warmer base I'd start with something like a little Tausept ochre, mixed with Rakarth flesh, then you reduce the ochre for your highlights. Much like our recent cloak video, in style, just different colours. Cult of Paint also just dropped a very nice tutorial on cloaks, also :)

I don't think it matters too much, you could use the white/black undercoat to push 'up' either pretty easily. Some of GW's reds just got a little more dull actually, Squidmar did a video on it, so the white undercoat may well help counter this!

How did you determine which colors to use? I’m curious because if I chose a different color how would I know which ones to use as a shade or a highlight?

Generally speaking it's a matter of sitting darker and lighter colours next to the colour at first, then testing quickly on a palette second :). I wanted a warm cloak, with dark shadows, so orange was the natural choice, for the green one I wanted it to be more subtle and less colourful, so I went with the ivory, so my highlights got less and less colourful. Ihave a question regarding your paints consistency during the beginning of your dry brush/stippling tutorial. I notice it seems quite watered down or is that laramins medium from. Citadel. Now are you doing more than one coat initially so as to control better. Create a subtle shadow . I could be mistaken with my old eyes. Byron, is there any chance Artis Opus could look into manufacturing and selling paint stands at the same level of quality as your model cases? I'm sure there is a market for good quality paint stands, but all the ones I can find are a bit nasty or, like the Hobbyzone products, fairly difficult to get in the UK. What I'd really love is paint stands with some kind of transparent cover that is easily opened... I have a huge dust problem in my house; I have to vacuum my paint bottles every day, just to minimise the amount of dust transfer to my models! Your model cases went down really well with my wife; she hasn't complained about them once. Because my hobby area is in my frontroom, how the stands I already have look is a bit of a flash point between us 😂

my best request would be: Wet blending and/or glazing on very small areas (like monster teeth e.g.). Areas that are large enough tthat they definitely should have a gradient, but are still so small that even size 1 brushes are rather large.

Big brushes might win but don’t forget 99% of people will be painting their cloaks on a fully assembled model and not on its own like this tutorial and a brush that size would be difficult not to overspill on parts you don’t want it on, especially on inside of cloak,between legs or over shoulder pads
