I would love to see you do a plasma gun like this. I find the tiny area of the gun, plus the nooks you have to reach for the OSL on the body makes it trickier than a flat door or wall. It's the intricate shapes of a human-shaped mini that I struggle with. Or even to take it to the extreme, something tiny like glowing eyes or lasers on a gun.

This was meditative, thanks. I have another technique you can try: Paint light sources white, then dry-brush white in multiple passes for all areas of the glow. Then paint over all of it with contrast paint. It will take what is basically a pure white light effect and colorize it.

With subtle techniques it feels like you have to already have experience the technique in order to pick up on what's actually happening on screen - like in every sergio calvo airbrush shot where you can tell that a part of the model got wet but I have no idea why it looks so perfect and amazing all the time.

Oh man, thanks so much for the comment, absolutely stoked to have helped you out! The method and steps take preference, and I actually regularly suggest that people photograph their OSL and turn it black and white to assess it (Orc Butt who we referenced does this, too). I have a close buddy who is colour-blind... and he's one of GW's army painters for specialist games (he did some of the brets for old world). As long as he labels his paints and stages clearly he's good, so don't be intimidated, and hold the course! I’d really like to see a full focus video on how to execute a SlapChop+++ base (that emulates an airbrush base) w’ Series D brushes on a regular size, somewhat fiddly type w’ swords & spikes and what not, infantry model.

I often struggle to use the right size brush for such models. A general guideline on what type of application (not just the SlapChop base) requires what size brush could be an extension to that tutorial. Got a whole set of Series D’s, but only managed to source (through many hoops) a size 4 & 2 to the Series S…but I can tell so much that they are becoming my favourite brushes over my Rapha 8404’s.

Keep ‘em top notch videos comin’!

As always, amazing work! Would love to see you tackle a challenge on how to change paint properties to make them better for drybrushing. For example using mediums, etc. to make matt paints better for dry brushing to get a smoother result then you otherwise would. Also a question, do you get better results with gel based paints or regular medium paints?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
Top-notch suggestion here, and something I am thinking about a lot at the moment... For reasons 👀👀👀... Regarding the mediums/base, it's mostly just about whether the paint is high quality or not, IMO, you *know* whether you're using good paint or not, instantly, and as long as it's not paint that takes far too long/too little to dry, it's generally more reliant on the quality of the base, not the type. This is something I'm still learning, though :)

What i would love to see next is an OSL video with OSL on a NMM metal or hardplastic (like in scifi armor) surface in your drybrushing style. Better still, a fantasy and a scifi version, on minis, magic/fire or energy effects respectively. Will you take up this challenge? Awesome video, the only complain I have is on the last example, the door would 100% be lightly lighted. Light bounces around and when it hits a suface it gets reflected even if the surface is not shiny. Shiny just means higher reflection (I'm simplying here). Being in a nook with 2 walls in view of the light there would be a reflection of a combination of the wall color and the light on the door and the rest of the nook. It's easier to visualize with a 3d software to be honest but it's definetly there. This way the door just looks like it's missing a part to allow for integration in the scene

Hey buddy, you can definitely pull it off using slapchop style, I'd recommend 'finishing' the mini, painting the source white, and then gently drybrushing 'away' from it with white, followed by a couple of thinned contrast glazes over the top, or a product like tesseract glow, which is quite similar to a contrast anyway.

Our pleasure, man, plenty more coming soon! Obviously I'm a little biased having designed D... But I can't help thinking that it's not a coincidence that a lot of the people recommending them are still using paper towels, not involving moisture, and also are specifying 'cheap' makeup brushes. It's a good thing though, more people trying drybrushing is always better, and they'll find the light eventually when they realise how smooth it's possible to go (or get bored of replacing and relearning their brushes on repeat, rather than once every 2 years)

Just recently got into miniatures and painting. Found your channel and really appreciate your style of teaching, so thanks! Question on contrast paints: have you tried any of the options out there aside from the citadel paints? If so, what are your thoughts?

Great tutorial! Your videos are very valuable! I wonder though, if I prepare some different paint blobs on a dry palette, they will be dried up in few minutes. Are you adding some retarder to keep them fresh?

I love the videos. I find then so helpful. I have a deff dread I'm painting and it has a light under the faceplate. I want to make it look like its glowing but I don't want to ruin my model.. any advice?

Could we get a video on painting black feathers like that of a crow or raven? I can't get it to ever look right.

Your Series D brushes are definitely the best dry brush brushes. I killed mine through over use, then one of my cats got hold of the new one and chewed it up. I was skint so I bout the ones from The Army Painter, they are a very poor version of your brushes. I have used them twice, they now live in my rubbish drawer. I'm waiting on my new Series D set from Element Games 👍

Are you going to be making a tutorial on painting Nurgle armor?

It's been so long since we did nurgle! Any excuse is a good one... Although I just end up drawn to great unclean ones 🤣

With the actual light fittings could you use pure white with a diluted green contrast like striking scorpion over the top?

Ah I have a question: can I add medium (speedpaint) to any of my (Vallejo) acrylics and it will make a contast-like colour? Thanks!
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Likewise you can add paint to your speedpaints to tint/strengthen them (works well with weak ones, like skeleton horde/aethermatic blue)

@artisopus Byron can i get a set of series D brushes but have the case custom engraved to say DEEEZZZ!!!? I'm asking the real questions.

You can absolutely get this engraved, and it'd be one of the more sensible things we've seen 😅 store.artis-opus.com/products/series-d-drybrush-set-deluxe-5-slot It's not in-your-face, but there's two optional engrave bits on the right of the product screen. Cheers, Darren!

How/would you modify things if going onto a lighter base colour? Like having a weapon glow cast on a yellow imperial fist or eldar or something like that?
@max16

id use AK white.. i have found that the valejo white comes out chalky sometimes. the AK white is god damn butter smooth. like oh my god. its like and ink but paint.

I'll have to give it a go, I love their 3rd gen paints, they're just a little too matte for my painting style (early drybrushing stages)

Can you do OSL on a lighter base rather than something dark being lit up?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
You absolutely can, it's just slightly more tricky and less forgiving (check Rich Gray's instagram, or other top-level painters, plenty of white helmets out there) instagram.com/daemonrich/?hl=en-gb

@@ArtisOpusNice! I think I saw that video, but I'm doing the blades a bit differently. Instead of alternating light/dark, I'm going from black color to light color (red-to-yellow-white edge transition) as you get closer to the edge of the blade.

So, you go from blue green to yellow green. Where would I come from for blue? And where would I come from for yellow? Not sure of direction on the colour wheel.

All your examples are on 40k building bits, do you have any suggestions of cheap AoS or general fantasy stuff to practice on? I can't see a hand held torch being as easy to paint as a light bulb.
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Жыл бұрын
We actually have a flaming torch and flaming spell on the channel! It's 50/50 this and 'reverse' highlighting for the source. They are a bit more complex... but also IRL are way more varied, so more forgiving as a result. Grab some scenery, anything with a window, or flamey-torch, they often have sources in scenery and undead kits in particular.
