I just read a few minutes ago that Faith Ringgold has died at 93. Faith, thank you so much for your fearless art and activism!!! Thank you for "Tar Beach"!!! REST IN POWER!!!

I was- well lol I still am! A white kid who grew up in the suburbs. Tar Beach was- and is one of my favorite books in the world. The art work is stunningly beautiful. The story always left me with a pang of sadness I couldn't quite understand (I couldn't understand why the daddy couldn't join the union building and what him being "colored" or half native american would have anything to do with it.) I never knew about Faith Ringgold and her quilts but, now I understand how the art in that book was just so wonderful! I wish I could order a copy to have now. It's so impowering for everyone. I know even now, I imagine myself driving over the city bridge and imagining that I owned everything I drove over on the bridge - just like Cassie in the book. I was in grade school when that book came out and I am a 37 year old woman. This book still sticks with me. It is so simple and so profound.
