Love you speaking to sitting down and pushing past that first hour (or less) where you don't "feel" like it but then the activity fuels the joy to stay and keep going.

Thank you for your candid responses to these questions. I have dealt with health issues and depression on and off throughout my life and getting motivated to get up and start a painting is difficult sometimes, but it’s worse when I set it down and don’t come back to it. I have about 6 unfinished paintings that I am determined to finish because I know that once I get started, I lose myself in the work and that helps with the depression. Juggling with responsibilities also puts a damper on my sudden outbursts of creativity. By the end of the day, I’m too tired to paint. It’s something I’ll have to work on with careful planning of my schedule as you mentioned.

My issue is that during the time where my dad got badly ill I painted like mad, it was the only place that gave me a chance to get my dad dying out of my head (sort of) for a bit. In his last 2 years I produced about 24 paintings per year just to keep my sanity. He is gone now for almost 2 years, but still... I struggle, I find it harder to make painting my happy place as easely as it was before. I want to get my joy back, first because I love painting and also I want to make a living out of it (actually you are my inspiritation for that Lisa)

Terrible sorry for what you went through, that must of been heartbreaking, you are strong, stronger that you think to go through something like that. What about do art together with someone or a group or a group of friends?
@hannah_finearts2 жыл бұрын
@@ShanaSephora Thanks for you kind words. Yey that was a rough time but it also had wonderful aspects, my Dad and I got very close and could eliminate all the missunderstandings and regrets of decades. We where at peace when he died and for that I am very, very gratefull.❤🩹 I just keep painting and hope the joy and easyness comes back. I thought my own painting channel would do that, I even started it on my dads birthday to honor him in a way. Let's see what time brings.... Unfortunately I don't know anybody who paints. Where I live art is not a big thing it seems, my painting buddies are all on YT llike Lisa - omg I sound pathetic....😂

@@hannah_finearts Great to know that you worked on forgiveness and healing in your last years with your dad. Not everyone does that! Will volunteering with a senior center maybe bring a sense of purpose back? Just contributing to another person in a meaningful way can help us produce our best work I've noticed. Art comes from beyond us and not from a traumatic space I feel, and maybe your trauma just made you tap into that space. You could also try working with orphanages if the other option is too reminiscent of losing your dad.

These are all so practical and applicable -- so many people talk a good game about "passion" and "follow your dream" when they discuss creative endeavors, but your advice, including business advice, is always really hands-in-the-dirt and very useful. I'd also advise the person who feels she can't charge enough to make it worthwhile that you don't have to sell the piece itself. Sell mugs, mousepads, totes, hoodies, blankets, postcards, and posters of it. Take that one unique piece of art and make it fungible in some way. And you are so dead on about not feeling inspired when you first sit at the easel (or behind the harp in my case). We think that it goes in the order of "I feel inspired!" and then doing your art. In reality, it's usually reversed: sit at your art, and then about a half hour later you'll be feeling inspired.

As Mel Brooks said "merchandising, merchandising". These items will probably provide more income than selling the painting just once.

People think you have to have passion all the time! That is why some marriages don’t work. It’s the daily grind that gets success. If you like what you do, just doing it is the work and what you make gets you motivation!

There is a lot of truth in what you’re saying. I’m in an on and off art drought of several months now, just trying to get back in the swing of things…there have been times I feel very passionate about what I’m doing. At the moment not as much. But I also know I’m overall happier when plugging away at various art projects. Thanks for the pep talk. It’s not all rainbows and sparkles! Art is work but still worth doing even if it’s a bit of a rough patch.

I'm not as good as I used to be because I stopped a few years back. I need to get back to some practicing. Even if only starting doing some tangles to get my brain and hands back into the groove. That actually made me better at drawing other things before. I would do them for fun between working on actual art.

Hmm this is a wake up call, I’m trying really hard to draw consistently but it’s so hard to pick up the pencil and continue. Taking breaks honestly does make it way harder to pick it up again. Thanks for this video really 🙂

Usually, almost always, ____ turns out differently than I was attempting.... No One but ME & God knows what exactly I was attempting... We basically judge Ourselves. Later, weeks, months a day or more later, I like whatever turned out just fine. People stop to ask Me what I'm painting/drawing... I tell Them You'll know when I find out. 😜 Seems to Me, Art is a form of meditation... ❤️☯️

Hey Lisa, you are so right about being away from your art for a while and the longer you go the harder it is to get back to it. I haven't been around for over a year, as I got very sick with my Crohn's disease and was dealing with my mother dying at the same time. I wanted to get back to it now that everything has settled down but was having a hard time, so I looked through my drawer of unfinished stuff, some things I had become frustrated with and others that I sketched out and even started the background but something else came up. I am using them to get me back into the swing of things!! Not sure if this will help anyone else but it seems to be working for me, as it brings back the memory of what I was feeling when I chose and started those pieces!! It really helped the "I don't know what to draw etc. that we can fall into!!

I love the feel of brushing paint on a canvas when inspired by some photo maybe I saw on line. Also I get inspired by my students who come up with ideas they want to paint. I'm not always thrilled with their ideas, so it can be a challenge which makes it worth doing. I don't paint just to sell, but now I have an abundance of very nice work that needs to find new homes.

Love this video! You gave such good tips. I can relate to so much of what you said. The biggest motivation I seem to have is creating something as a surprise for a loved one. And, if there is a deadline involved like birthdays or Christmas, that really lights a fire under me. Thank you for defining who is an artist. I struggle with calling myself an artist, but you just gave me permission!❤❤❤

Thank you, this is very motivating! I got very distracted by my other passion (performing and teaching dance) and I've neglected focused drawing and painting for close to a decade now, after finishing art school. And I do indeed feel blah. Doing graphic design has made me so bored and I lost my creative drive with fine and digital art; I'm finding it very hard to get back, when it was easy for most of my life. I do have new illustration goals that I really want to accomplish, so I'll have to change my priorities and focus. I know I can start projects all day long but it's hard to finish them, that definitely takes discipline. I've never been paid well for my art (in any form), which is very frustrating since I know that it's good. But I won't give up. Thanks

I watched your video on using a photo editing software but I have a moderate tech aversion so the idea of playing with such software, while intriguing, repulses me... well, repulse may be a strong word but at the very least it's like trying to connect two opposite sides of a magnet... try as I might, it's not gonna happen. 😔 it feels like it really stunts my creative growth

I'll be honest, I struggle with creating fanart rather then original art. I think the reason why I struggle is I hear that annoying voice in my head saying to me, "that's not going to pay the bills or make ends meet." I do however am learning a great deal of improving my skills into areas I realized that needed more attention to. It's helping me see what mediums and style I want for my art. I do fanart because I'm interested in it and see its posible potentials. What do you suggest?
