This is a great lesson, and applicable to so many other skills as well. I once had a flight instructor who told me it was important periodically to make yourself a little uncomfortable, because that's the only thing that will make you fight to be comfortable again. If you're always comfortable you'll never have a reason to grow.

I am a beginner now and looking for all these "What I regret from my student/early days" videos from artists so that I don't make the same mistakes. This sounds like the best advice yet. Very sensible and sound and appreciated advice from all these artists. But, oddly, I'm getting overwhelmed by too much information and starting to regret that I've got too much advice and I don't know who to listen to. I feel like I'm in the driver's seat with a half dozen backseat drivers.

Love it and wow you really can play the violin, that was beautiful. I love the orca painting, which was one of the reasons I followed you. Can I add one more tip? Time…Make time to draw and paint. I have to schedule art time or I never get to draw or pain. My job is demanding and family time is a must. My sketch book sits at the kitchen table so I can pick it up and at least draw if there is not time to work in my studio. It also keeps me off the internet. Thanks Lisa!!

Paulyne, thank you for this great reminder. It's easy to get caught up in day to day life. I have to schedule time too, but don't, so I don't get to draw or paint. 😟 So stress levels continue to rise. 😥

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I’ve been following a lot of “beginner” watercolor tutorials on KZbin, and I’m actually pretty good at painting flowers! I like flowers, but I want to do more than figure out how to press my brush down and lift it to get a leaf or a petal. What I really want to do is move on, and I’ve been trying! But, it easy to get stuck when you feel comfortable with one thing, and having difficulty with something else. I watched a watercolor artist recently who is really good (like you!), and I’m feeling kind of intimidated, but I decided to at least push myself and try some of her Patreon tutorials. I love “realism,” although it certainly can be fun to experiment (especially with watercolor), and that’s where my heart is. When I signed up for Patreon, I looked at the latest tutorial (intermediate/advanced) and decided I’m going to give it a go. What’s the worst that can happen? I have lots of paints, brushes AND paper! Plus, I’m retired and this is a hobby, yet I put so much pressure on myself! Thank you!!!

Great advice! These concepts hold true for any learning at any age. I’ve also found it’s helpful to go back to beginner tutorials after trying advanced ones. It helps me see progress and I usually pick up on things I didn’t the first time.

You and I have talked several times about beginners wanting the same results as someone doing it for several years. The analogy that I have started using in the coloring world for the different stages of growth is also from real life and that is in the workforce…like the trades, specifically for construction. In the different trades you have your apprentices, journeymen and then your masters. There are variables for each stage of course, but on average, apprenticeships can take anywhere from 2-4 years. Becoming a journeymen, likewise can take an additional 2-4 years, although the vast majority stay here for the remainder of their working years. Then you have your masters, I don’t know about other trades, but for electricians, they need to be an electrician for a minimum of 10 years before they can even think about going for their master electrician license and many don’t pass that test the first time round. I let them know that a beginning apprentice isn’t ‘t going to know as much about that job as someone whose been doing it for 2-4+ years. The person that has been doing the job for 4 years isn’t going to know as much as the one doing the same job for 6-8+ years and so forth. The same is generally going to be true in the art world or anything else in life. It just takes time to learn a new skill, period. Most people can at least understand, if not relate to that analogy and so a lot of people will finally understand that they need to just learn to enjoy the process of leaning and applying…then of course you will still have some who “get it”, but still don’t like it. Crazy, right?

I feel like this is so much like going to the gym. We know we want the end result, but ugg, getting started! Once you go to the gym daily for a week or two it starts to become habit and something you just do without the need to get yourself motivated. Art is the same, just force yourself for a couple of weeks, in the mood or not, then it becomes more habit and easier

Yeah ... I think a lot of the beginner mindset is thinking there is a "trick" or shortcut to everything. Some things do have shortcut quick-fixes (put your pinky here instead of there or hold your elbow up), and suddenly you can do things that you couldn't do before. But there are a lot more techniques where there's no one-quick-fix and you just have to settle in for the long haul. Beginners have a hard time knowing when there's a quick-fix and when there isn't.

I am so STUCK. 🙄. I always over color with colored pencils. Either the paper doesn’t take more or it tears, wears off etc. I use Gamsol to blend. Maybe that a problem? Ugh. I’m not even picking them up anymore. I do make the same mistakes over and over.
@lisa4471
@lisa4471 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm maybe try different papers like hot pressed watercolor paper, which can take many layers. If you use solvent to blend, make sure you have enough layers of colored pencils on the paper and not too much solvent on your brush
@kickstand7224
@kickstand7224 2 жыл бұрын
I was having same problem... Switching to better quality paper definitely helped as well as underpainting the background before detail work w pencils. Also using a cloth to wipe away excess wax bloom helps too and will brighten it up.
@Lachri
@Lachri 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with Lisa and KICKSTAND, it sounds like an issue with the paper. It shouldn't tear or wear off with gamsol. :)

Thanks for the tips! I remember watching one of your videos or livestreams about using a limited pallet for acrylics. For some reason I can’t find it 😅.
