I've always liked many bands and many styles of music. This meant that for most of my life if someone asked me who my favorite band was, I had trouble coming up with an answer. These last few years I finally have one, and it is Larkin Poe. They can take blues classics from the '30s to the '60s and make them sound both awesome and authentic, as well as writing a couple songs that had me fooled because I thought they WERE blues classics that I was unfamiliar with, only to discover they were LP originals. And for Southern Rock, I think they may have perfected the genre. Glad to see videos like this being made that will hopefully bring more attention to them.

@fortivomusic there are too many... From Blood Harmony, it might be Bolt Cutters and the Family Name, but give Lips as Cold as Diamonds a listen. A hidden gem. An all-time favorite is Mad as a Hatter. Makes me tear up every time.

Both sisters learned violin at age 3. They also learned a little piano before they picked up strings and fell into blue grass music. Megan struggled with fretting but she discovered the dobro which lead to the lapsteel, which she modified to carry. Rebecca won awards playing banjo and mandolin before transitioning to first acoustic then electric guitar. She can play some slide. She started on a Jazzmaster because they toured early on with Elvis Costello, who mentored them. She wouldn't play solos, in part because she felt intimidated by Megan's prowess on slide. She was good enough back then but lacked the self-confidence. It's only been in the last few years Rebecca came out of her shell to play solos. Now, she's mainly a Strat girl with bridge humbuckers, a sparkling Telecaster, and a Gretsch. Catch some of her YT shorts with her just noodling and you'll be blown away. LP got a big boost from their early YT series, "Tip 'O' the hat" covers, usually played in a hotel room recorded on a phone. My first two LP experiences were "Sound of Silence" and "Little Wing" which lead to "Preachin' Blues". Then I stumbled on Rebecca covering Johnnie B Goode and I was hooked. LP was and still is shunned by the big money in music because since the start, they refused to sign with record companies, electing to create their own company, Trickie-Wood Records so they own all their music and maintain absolute control. It has finally provided much needed cash to upgrade their stage show as well. Megan married Mike Seal, who is a very quiet, unassuming master guitarist. He has played with Jerry Douglas for years. Rebecca married bad boy Tyler Bryant, who's influence can clearly be seen and heard. They are students of American music, especially the blues and call themselves "Roots Rock". They can play you a blistering rock number then follow it with a soulful bluegrass excursion if they feel like it. Whatever they allow you to hear has been rehearsed until it is fit for public consumption. They are very precise and disciplined. They carry great cache' with industry icons and are very highly respected. They've gone through a few drummers but bassist Tarka Layman has been with them about 8 yrs.

I have to apologize. Based on the recommendations KZbin kept sending me, I got the impression they were 'just another YT cover band' and never bothered to listen in. Foolish me. This is powefull stuff. Thanks for putting me straight!

Watching this video on New Year's Eve, 2023. For me, Larkin Poe have brought much joy to what was a tough year emotionally - 2 members of my extended family passed away from dementia - and then I found their "Mad as a Hatter" video clip from The Convent, had a good cry, and since then have searched for more and more of their music and other output on KZbin. These 2 hard working and very talented sisters are now my favourite rock and blues musicians - the best around currently - and deserve every award and accolade thats going. Thanks for this compilation, including my favourite track, which (unsurprisingly) had me reaching for the tissues again.

I've seen them seven or eight times now, and each time has been better than the one before. Rebecca's guitar playing has improved tremendously, and Megan is no longer hanging back in her shadow during shows. I do miss Kevin, though. He was a hell of a drummer.

What happened to the drummer … ? Why was he replaced?
@jeffreygunn3530
@jeffreygunn3530 Жыл бұрын
@@nckwlch He just decided that it was time to do something else after 6 years on the road with Larkin Poe. I think he's doing session work in Nashville now. It happens. Ally Venable lost both her drummer and her bass player last year for the same reason. Not everyone's cut out for playing 180+ shows a year indefinitely.

@@fortivomusic Hard to pick one, really. I did enjoy seeing them on the Main Stage at the Big Blues Bender in Vegas back in 2019. It's always cool to see how the audience at a festival reacts to a relatively-unknown (at least to them) performer. When they came out, most of the audience was milling around, off getting drinks, etc. Nobody paid that much attention to them. They were waiting for Robert Cray. That didn't last long 🙂

Excellent introduction for myfavourite band (after Beatles). Their non compromising musical independence is what drives them. As they plough through many musical genres they never disappoint. They're very hospitable to their fans, and have earned a nice community of followers who willingly support their music. Please consider a more in depth L.Poe video in the near future.

@@fortivomusic Hi again. You already included great songs in your video. I guess if asked I would add "Jailbreak" & "Bolt Cutters And The Family Name" & "Wanted Woman/AcDc" & "Easy Street" & "Ex-Con" & "Kick The Blues" And I also think their cover of "Wade In The Water" is an atmospheric track. Oh, and also their version of "Black Betty" - especially the one recorded in the "Jam In The Van" series (with just Rebecca & Megan playing)

This is a pretty good high level overview of LP's music, but I was hoping for more depth. Their love for the American South goes deep, and there is a dark side to some of their music. Hopefully someday you'll go into more detail about this excellent band that makes some of the very best music today. 👍
