Daniel Smith are my watercolours of choice! They are just unparalleled for me. That primatek set was my first - I will say that some of those paints do take a while to 'work up' when dried into pans (specifically the amethyst in that set for me, which I always have to remember because I love using it. It really is a gorgeous purple). It just means they need to soak in water more before use, and then it works just fine. Piemontite and Jadeite are beautiful colours that I love too (and I agree on the rhodonite. I basically don't use mine at all). One of my favourite primatek colours is the Diopside Green - it's very bright and punchy on its own, but I find it mixes lovely darker shades especially for how I paint portraiture. Also that Beren and Luthien piece is stunning. The way you've captured the fabric and light is just beautiful. The mood comes across so perfectly. I'm not an acrylic painter at all but I love seeing how you use it! I look forward to seeing more Silmarillion themed work!

It was so hard to find Daniel Smith before I moved to Korea (and even here I have to order online and/or the selection can be limited) - so I'm really happy that I finally got my hand on a set or two. Thank you so much for the advice about needing to reactivate these paints quite a bit! I never experienced that with the Quinacridone Gold and my other DS shades, so I swatched the Primatek ones with the same amount of water and "soaking" as usual. I'll have to give them another try with more power! :D I just looked up the Diopside Green and I'm obsessed! What do you use it with when painting portraits? Thank you - the Beren & Luthien painting took months of painting time here and there, and I loved every free minute I got to put into it! The Silmarillion is such a great playground for magical, mystical art.

You should definitely invest in a Buff Titanium and Potters pink. Both colours are very versatile and can be used to do much in watercolour.

Love, love, love the limited palette, it's so effective! Your Beren and Luthien is an amazing piece! I'm just at the beginning of your video so I might add comments the more I watch, but I just need to say that I'm so happy to see a new video from you. I'm really stressed out with what is happening in the world and your videos have a calming effect. And I got your package, finally, 2 weeks ago, I was so excited!! Holding the Dracula zine after seeing all the process to make it happen was really special!

Thank you so much! I wish I had some more actual painting footage for those final stages of the Lúthien painting, but I was so focused on mixing and painting. :') Making these videos and my little sketches and the escapist fantasy worlds to dive into are what keeps me going in these unpredictable times. I'm glad if that little oasis of calm extends through the internet... And wow, that package took quite a while! I hope everything arrived safely ❤️

And I've been bouncing between Open and "normal" Golden, but I didn't have as much of a system for knowing what color to buy in what line of product. I will follow your example from now on, it's logical and cost effective. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on that kind of decision making, I learn alot.

I'm currently working on that one - it's literally rendering a preview as I type this :D It won't be a super in-depth tutorial, as I just use very basic functions, but maybe that's ideal for fellow artists

I had a single heavybody paint dry up so I've been paranoid ever since! Buying those expensive, highly saturated colors as OPEN really works well for me, hope it does for you, too. Especially since the early color layers and underpainting don't need to pack that much of a punch yet, and these come in on the final color pass. Also, I've found that mixing an OPEN paint and heavybody paint together creates a really easy to handle texture, easier to blend but not as "gooey" as just the OPEN ones. :)

Happy lunar new year to you as well! And congrats on finishing another ambitious large-scale painting! The Luthien & Beren painting really turned out amazing, and the hard work and effort that you put into preparing for it (reference images of textiles, making models for the background, etc.) has really paid of! The LOTR art book looks absolutely beautiful and inspiring. I might need to get a copy as well. And I would like to see your 3D model process for the wolfhound. Had to laugh a bit that your cat will be the fur model! Creative solution! Have fun with your new paints!

Thank you! ❤️ I really learned so much from this painting - though the next few will have to be a bit smaller, for my well-being lol. My shoulder hurt from painting that high up on my easel! I'm glad I got all those references done before it turned cold... now, I can't imagine posing for something like this without wearing 3743 layers 😆 so that's why I'm gravitating towards 3D again. And our cat makes for a beautiful wolfhound reference for sure 🐈

this was such a calming video to end the week on 🥰 i made a hot oat cocoa to watch it with which was so relaxing. i loooved the big acrylic painting at the beginning and the explanation about the color palette. i had done my first very big painting (it was a3) for my parents as a christmas gift and for the first try, i didnt limit my palette which i liked, it didnt look bad. but on my second try i used a limited palette (and i also changed the composition bc it looked ro busy) and i far preferred that painting. it looked more cohesive? but i'm impressed how little colors you used and how good the painting looked! i havent painted with acrylics, it's a medium that - like you mentioned in the video bc of the quick dry time - kinda scares me. as a watercolor artist, i looove the colors you got. specifically the amethyst (?), that purple is gorgeous!! unfortunately, daniel smith is kinda hard to get here. i havent seen it yet but i'm dying to try them. i have made small list already of colors i want to try out should i ever find them in a store 😺 mainly colors i dont already own, but i also want to try the quinacridone gold bc i keep hearing that it is beautiful. i use mainly schmincke and last year, i fell in love with sennelier, as they're easier for me to find and i love the colors (the sennelier quinacridone gold is very beautiful!). i also love the schmincke supergranulating colors, i just got the super granulating color "shire green" from schmincke. i loved the "shire blue" over the winter, especially for the fir trees that i have painted a lot. shire blue is a bluish green and granulates beautifully! the shire green is more a spring green with yellow granulation but not being too speing green that it looks artificial and was my wish for spring to come. i hope i will use the latter a lot for flowers - i'm already dreaming about spring and going out and painting 😻 i hope you have fun trying out the watercolors and you using them in future videos!! happy lunar new year, hope you find lots of time to paint and relax 💖

Thank you! I barely got this one edited before the weekend was over. Glad I did 💖 I'm so happy you liked that explanation! I'd wanted to shoot more painting footage, but during that week, it was so cold and I only got to paint late at night - so I just powered through and forgot my camera more often than not. So long chats about pigments instead! :D I could talk about that for hours! How did you like painting on A3? It's so intimidating to make that jump to a larger size, but also can unlock some new possibilites! Did you use a specific limited color palette? When I got started, I only used the Zorn palette (and then added Ultramarine Blue later) for months! 😂 That Amethyst shade just speaks to me! Purples are so versatile, too! Daniel Smith was impossible to find back when I lived in Switzerland - but now in Korea, other brands are harder to find, or incredibly expensive by comparison. Sennelier for example... :') And I saw those Schmincke Supergranulating colors at the art shop a few months ago and NEARLY bought a few. They're so expensive, but the color samples looked beyond beautiful. I love the name Shire Green, too, I might have to come back to those... let's hope spring hurries up so we can go outdoors! 💚

@@evydraws-art i really did, i actually love long chats from artists on their thoughts and intentions behind their paintings and color palettes and everything. it's so fascinating to me, bc everyone has such a different approach and i love hearing about it bc it also makes me think about how to approach my art differently or ways i could grow. a3 was scary!! normally i'm firm in the a5 corner and i also usually only paint in sketchbooks, they're finished pieces but not on loose paper (which i would like to change this year, i would love to create some art to hang up on the wall) so the a3 paperpad and me we were just kinda co-existing for a while before i mustered up the courage to paint on it 😺 i have several watercolor palettes, each curated with a specific goal in mind and on my first try, i used every palette, so when i painted flowers or greenery, for example, i used every green available to me which was fun but also overwhelming 😅 i guess i got lost in the bigger than usual for me-canvas and thought i could do it. but it was too busy, too many different colors. so for the second try, i actually went back to only using one of my palettes and using only the 2 green tones within that palette. and that helped to have the same greens (or blues etc) pop up through the entire painting, it felt more pulled together that way. i find the zorn palette so interesting but i havent tried to limit myself to it. i'm definitely a bit cautious when it comes to mixing i would say and prefer my ready mixed colors to be sure. downside is, bc of that, i have a lot of paint around me 😹 i can only recommend the schmincke supergranulating ones! the shire green is definitely gorgeous, also the shire blue. i also love the tundra orange which is a lighter, warm brown that granulates into like darker, reddish brown. it's beautiful for earthy floors and walls. i also love tundra pink which leans more purple with darker pink pigments or galaxy violet, which is a bluish purple - i use those two either for flowers or in urban scenes they make interesting windows. the entire galaxy line is very pretty. i think those are my top ones! forest brown, despite its name, is a very pretty foresty green that doesnt lean too olive, but still has a kind of "dirt" in it, that makes it very good for nature. well, i will stop here but i definitely love and can recommend the schmincke supergranulating colors i mentioned!
