It never fails to astonish me how with real professionals a painting starts off as if a drunken chicken danced over the sheet of paper, but in the end it all becomes whole and amazing and beautiful. Just incredible. Thank you so much.

Hi Ian, when I'm teaching drawing classes, I tell my students they have to learn to get comfortable with the chaos of creating. John Cleese gave a wonderful speech a number of years back where he talks about this chaos and how most people try to get out the creating stage as quickly as possible because it's incredibly uncomfortable. But if you can learn to play around and get more comfortable during this time, wonderful things can happen that you never could have foreseen. I try to remember that when I'm doing a demo that's going sideways...it ain't always easy...grin.

What stood out to me was that water colour provides "happy accidents" and in turn we are faced with problem solving and the opportunity to adapt to the moment we are creating. Thank you for your time and passion for the arts.

I've not tried sketching out in the open yet. When you said people say to you "are you an artist? You're not very good are you?" So funny, but what I dread most. Love how the imperfections make it prefect. Thank you sharing.

Hi Ian I'm not a lover of the traditional watercolour cold press papers and find cartridge paper far more exciting though not really stable enough for heavy water use. What paper do you use and recommend as I know you use a smooth (hot press) paper. Any contribution to this question happily accepted. Bx
