Today I am testing KZbin Shorts art hacks!! This is a continuation of my art hack series "ARTIST TESTS ART HACKS". These are Tik Tok/Instagram reels style vertical 60 second videos and a lot of them have some fantastic art and artist hacks! So today I tried and tested some of the best and worst I could find, some from youtube artists and others from the likes of 5 minute crafts! You can use clear coat as a first layer of the straight line with tape trick. Thay way you only have to match the finish, not the color. I think someone also used hairspray, but don't quote me. I may have confused the hairspray with a 3D printer trick.

OK Y'all, I am an artist, but, more importantly, I was a pro painter for years (that means a house painter) and I worked in the paint dept of Home Depot for two years. The "secret" to painter's tape is to remove it when the paint is still wet. If you wait til it dries the paint is essentially chipping off and you won't get a smooth edge. If you wait til it's kinda dry it is even worse cuz the paint is, like, stretchy and elastic so you can end up ripping even bigger pieces off, like trying to rip a piece pf plastic wrap in half. But yeah, with textured walls, it is almost impossible to get the tape to wrap around all the little bumps and valleys.

@@ChloeRoseArt they are definitely tricky! I hate trying to get clean lines on textured surfaces because even if you take the tape off while wet, you risk messing it up still by smudging it with your finger

I read online that you're supposed to run over the tape with a damp rag before you start painting and again just before you take it off

@@smallbeginning2 I've never heard that one before. Maybe it makes the tape even tighter against the wall? Like how you brush the back of a canvas you just stretched with water to make it even tighter? But then you would have to be really careful if you also did it after you painted or else you would wipe up the paint.

The boiling water for fixing a frayed paint brush probably works best with nylon bristles because they're plastic.

the hack with the horse/bear drawing seems like they took redlining (an actual method used to study shapes and forms) and kinda simplified it for kids/beginners, so that’s cool

I've seen that another way to get clean tape lines is to just take the tape off *before* the paint is fully dry. No need for additional paint.

Wouldn't to work on a textured wall though. In the 'hack' the first layer creates a seal to stop the second layer going though. Also the method you mention is only works if you only need one layer of paint

I learned how to draw as a kid with the activity pages where they give you 1/2 of a picture and you had to draw the other 1/2. It was really helpful in free handing and creating symmetry in faces.

I never had one of those, how interesting!! I guess is because they were for the rich boys who got books every month without appreciating them enough, i literally learned how to draw or coloring by literally watching my skilled artist friend doing it, and then trying the same stuff myself, lmao (Like, i met him at 13 y.o., i started to hang out with him, and when i noticed, we were artist pals since years. It was sort of magical! He nows lives is usa so i kind of progress more on my own, but i do miss drawing together in local otaku conventions a lot! Our styles are very different but talking about art made us enjoy our lives more.)

A small tip! (my bad if someone already commented this lmao-) When blending coloured pencils, I find it helps to colour in small circular motions instead of scribbling in lines :-) It gives you a much broader, even coverage in a shorter amount of time

Art educator here- To be real though, figuring out the basic shapes of a thing is HUGE for beginning artists. I used to trace over shapes like this all the time. Grid method didn't do great for me as an artist with ADHD. Also- tracing has its place in learning too.

the first bear looked fine, if you'd have added the nose, eyes and fur it would have looked as good as the 2nd one. The main problem was that was just an awkward reference picture but it's still a good way to train your hands and eyes to see shapes-it's basically the grid method without the grid.

For fixing brushes: masters brush cleaner and preserver, it can fix brushes, and clean out even dried paint. Works with all types of paint and a little goes a very long way. Smells wonderful as well!

I’ve used a hair straightener on my natural bristle brushes. Doesn’t affect the glue because you don’t put it on the metal. For tiny brushes and synthetic ones I lay the brush so it’s flat and heat a metal chopstick and run it over the brush. It isn’t perfect but it gives you a little bit of extra life on your brushes.

The thing with straight lines with tape is that the video is using green masking tape, which is Frog Tape. It creates a seal when moisture first hits it. If you go over it with water first and wait a few minutes, it will create that clean edge. I use it exclusively for my art (mainly watercolor but sometimes acrylic) because it also is less likely to damage the paper when removed.

Tip for blending color pencils: If you want a smoother gradient, you have to bring up the colors into each other instead of just holding the pencil lighter. For example if you mix 2 colors (like red and yellow) then you need 3 color areas (red, orange, yellow) - in that middle area you blend while gradually shifting the amount of color, so the first color becomes weaker and the next becomes stronger. This should happen with the colors being layered on top of each other, not in separate. That's also how you can get blended colors (in this case orange) even without using a pencil that was originally that color.

Hey Chloe, I think it's really cool how you express how challenging coloured pencil art is as a lot of people hear coloured pencils and think of a kids colouring book rather than "real art". Thank you!! I like to make sure people know that they’re not alone if they find new mediums challenging or have to practice for a while at them! Just because someone is an artist doesn’t mean they can use all mediums perfectly right away, ie I’d be a terrible tattoo artist because I’ve never done it, and I’ve only used oils once 😂 of course knowing how to use acrylics helps, but you still have to learn how to work with it. Every medium takes a lot of work!

I was taught the outline technique (horse and bear "hack") when I took figure drawing at university. My professor taught us this at the beginning to not overwhelm figure beginners like myself. It was super helpful to do the outline lightly then go back and fill it in and refine it. We obviously learned other methods but using this technique was great.

Putting down a base layer before painting is recommended for painting your walls. Especially for some colors, to make them more vibrant

I actually thought the contour drawing of the bear was quite good for proportions. It looked more true to life. If you're drawing a base to color on top of, you don't need to draw out the fluffy hair in the sketch portion after all

I've actually learned the boiling water method from one of my first How to Draw Manga books. My secret is to not dip the brush all the way in (Get only the bristles wet to prevent the glue from melting), then shape it, carefully drying it with a paper towel, and then using either a bit of conditioner as a brush shaper to really smooth down the bristles with your fingers, then let dry overnight. Works beautifully! ♥ Also, there may be a couple of stray bristles that I carefully trim off with tiny scissors.

I just wet my brushes then swipe them on a bar of soap. Then mold the bristles back then let them dry. Or just use them right away if I need them lol. It like wax coats them.

I actually have used the "drawing over a reference" hack. I don't use it too make a line drawing though. I use my pencil to go over it in the air to help me understanding the motion my hand needs to make to get what ever line I need. Then I draw like normal. No one ever taught me this, it was just an instinct.

Ok, but that hack with the horse I found actually useful, because that's similar to how I learned how to draw, visualizing the length of the lines and proportions of the reference image, and then drawing them, although I didn't draw over the reference. But I do think it is helpful.

One thing I was always told by my art teachers, always start out light and get a little darker as you go, and do everything in layers. (In terms of shading) it'll look bad at first but it gets better with each layer and if you want it to look realistic you'll need a lot of layers. Takes patience that's for sure, of course with practice you'll be able to do it faster

The horse/bear one…. Teaching how to see the contour lines in an image…. Starting with a simple image …. Learning to see the lines… then you would practice contour drawings without tracing like before…. Honestly contour drawing is an amazing and underused art technique:)

Another hack I’ve seen that is just as effective to get clean tape lines, is using caulking over the edge of the tape! Much easier than happening to have the same wall paint color lol!

When I painted my hall a couple years ago, I used Mod Podge on the tape to seal those little nooks and crannies. Worked well.

I've seen a lot of people do the hot water with brush trick. As long as you don't get the ferrule wet than you should be ok. A lot use soap after to maintain the shape while it dries. I noticed someone mentioned that it probably works better for synthetic hair but as hairstylist I assume real hair would work just as well because when hair is wet it swells and it can be moulded to the shape you like and it creates new bonds as it dries. So again the soap makes sense to maintain the shape whilst drying. Also your bear looks awesome! X ☺️

Another way to get that straight line with painters tape, you can use mod podge or any clear paint base instead of acrylic, that way you don't have to worry about any color variation!

If you don't have the original paint to seal the tape, could you use Mod Podge over the edges since it dries clear.

You'd want to make sure to get the correct sheen. I painted a design on a wall and since the paint on the wall is satin, I used satin mod podge

For the paint brush reshaping, I believe that's a two step process. After the hot water, put brush cleaner (like Masters) on it but don't make it foam. Lay it flat on a towel and let it dry. When you go to use it, rinse the cleaner out and it should be in better shape, maybe not like new, but better.

You can actually purchase clear acrylic medium that is designed to stop pint from seeping underneath tape. We use it a lot in the abstract painting world where we use tape to get crisp lines and shapes

Try getting out of your head a bit, maybe draw something and let it be completely different from how it looks in real life and let it be unrealistic. Maybe allowing yourself to be free in art will help you get into the creative flow again

The line one works, it’s about tracing and getting muscle memory. Also this called drawing the negative space. So instead of drawing the object you draw the space around the object. It’s great to retrain your brain.

From my painting prof at uni we learned to create hard-edge acrylic paintings like Mondrian best to use a clear medium like acrylic matte medium along with the masking tape, apply it on and let it dry. Proceed with the paint, now it's been a while and I can not remember if it was easiest to pull paint when tacky wet, or dry. This also best worked on canvas so I can not vouch on other media choices. This was before all that lovely blue painter's tape and we just used regular masking tape stuck to our jeans a few times to reduce the stickiness.

I use really hot water to fix my brushes all the time. It's not perfect, but it helps a lot to get them a bit straighter after I've left them in the water too long and the end has curved.

To be honest the weird troom troom linetechnique was (in a modified version) very helpful for me to learn to draw what you see instead of what you think you see (so maybe to learn how to analyse shapes better?). So look at the negative space and making shapes angular, and measuring the line lengths against each other helped when getting a shape to look more like the reference version
