Sir, you are an inspiration. I play the drums in my church. Here in India, we have both western styled songs and our indian folk and classical styled songs in churches. I grew up playing the tabla and dolak, and so when I play for those traditional songs, I had to play the drums in a different way which wouldn't sound like how a drumkit should be played. Those traditional songs are not heavy, but mostly laid back. When I came across you few years back, I tried to incorporate your melodic drumming style into mine, which expanded my view. And I can now try a lot of things but also can ensure playing for the benefit of the song and the place where I place. I want to say this, thankyou you so much for your drumming.

A bit of trivia - the kit used on In Absentia was a DW hire kit that Gavin wasn't particularly fond of. They were recording in LA and he had just joined PT at that point so he didn't have access to his normal Sonor kit. And I quote GH - "I don't particularly enjoy the DW sound. Hahaha"

This album was not recorded in LA but in New York. He told that during a drumeo video in which he explains how he approaches playing and writing of songs. He did even mention that Sound of Muzak was recorded with only a couple of takes.

Beautiful work nailing that tuning , and explaining in terms of exact notes! So annoying when some videos only give vague descriptions of tuning (eg medium high) and also don’t demonstrate the isolated sounds of top of bottom heads, which you guys DID do on this video. Keep up the good work!! I have 15” and 18” on my custom Tama kit, but I usually tune them them a fifth apart, rather than a fourth. I will have to give the fourth tuning a shot!

Amazing job (as always). Indeed, it's suprising how high the toms are tuned, listening to the recordings I always thought they sounded like they're in a low tuning.

Beautiful!! I love the detail you put into this recreation video. Gavin Harrison is an amazing musician, and Porcupine Tree's In Absentia album is iconic! I think you did an amazing job recreating this album. It brings a smile to my face!! If I had any criticism, I would say the snare sound is a bit too flat and needs more resonance and a bit more high end overtones. But that's a minor nit-pick. Thank you for all the effort you put into this video!
@diegocastillo85446 ай бұрын
@ArtOfDrumming Friend, first of all, thank you for your tremendous work! Question, what would be the tuning of each Tom with its resonant head? If you like this sound ( I do) and would like to tune your drums to certain pitches, here's how: If you tune the reso head a minor third higher than the batter, the resulting pitch of the drum will be a whole step higher than the reso (actually an octave or two lower, but still). For example, E batter + G reso = A drum. Or, B batter + D reso = E drum.

If Rush ever decided to go back on the road ...Gavin would be the OBVIOUS choice. Nobody could ever replace Neil of course...but if he (Neil...& Rush fans) would have approved of anyone... it would be Gavin. He's a monster player.

That would be very good and awesome to see. But honestly, I think a lot of people would think that Mike Portnoy would be the perfect fit. Since he was mikes biggest influence and Dream Theatre music is basically rush on crack 🤣 By the way, would love to see you guys do a video on Dream theatre with Mike Portnoy
@timb3503 ай бұрын
@@OfficialKevinFox Portnoy is a great drummer...but he's got nothing on Gavin. I hate to say it...but Portnoy is simply generic. He's got great chops and can play anything...but he's simply generic. A LOT of drummers have great chops and can play anything. I can pick out Gavin playing anywhere anytime. His drum sound. His cymbal selection. His arrangments. His style. Everything about him is totally unique. There are very very very few drummers who you can say that about. Peart was one...and that is why Gavin would be one of the only drummers who would be right to replace him...if the other two ever wanted to give it a try. Neil would have wanted someone unique...and that is Gavin in spades.

My suggestions: • Josh Freese(Foo Fighters and DEVO) • Mitch Mitchell(Jimi Hendrix Experience) • Andy Newmark(Session drummer for David Bowie, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, and others( • John Schwartz(Weird Al's drummer since 1980) Also what about a revised version of Nick Mason's kit? Maybe for Pink Floyd's later tours in the late '80s and '90s or for Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, or alternatively for the band's earlier stuff when Syd Barrett was in the band

Great vid, lovely kit set up. I can tell the drums are Gretsch and not Sonor but they sound good, just a little dryer and a little less resonant. That could be recording technique though...hard to tell on youtube. Great cymbal selection. I built my own stave set recently which sounds great but I'm still dialing in my cymbal selection and looking for inspiration.

Gavin's many different cymbals are how you add texture to music as a drummer. Playing the cymbal hard, or soft, and sometimes sideways or upside down because cymbals are capable of many different sounds in just one cymbal if you know what you are doing. And it's hard to go wrong with Zildjian Custom A cymbals. I still think they are the most "musical" of all the different brands and types of cymbals out there. If you don't just bash the shit out of them all the time. But yeah, Gavin is a pretty badass drummer. The band is a little mellow for me, but still good music by far when ya want to be mellow but without being "boring"? right?
