You could just see towards the end that he had committed his entire life to being this astonishing behind a drumkit and playing for a real audience, it’s not just a gorgeous performance, but a deep testament to a person’s integrity and a life well chosen and well lived.

I'm pretty sure it was actually freeform. The band conductor can be seen communicating with the band and Gavin through a microphone that feeds to their in-ears. Eye contact between Gavin and the conductor means that he can just count in whenever he is ready.

You're 90% correct on that. Sound is a pressure wave. It moves quicker through higher density materials, which causes the frequency of the wave to increase. Assuming the temperature remains the same, increasing the air pressure in the tom has the same effect. The sustain ratio of the heads probably does change, as you mentioned, but the effect that has on the drum's fundamental pitch in this instance is negligible compared to the air pressure's effect.

Sadly I'll admit this was my entry to porcupine tree. I missed the boat, but the music is fucking great. Better late than never!!!

Musicality...more LIKE a Buddy Rich solo than what sometimes devolves into a circus show. His solo fit the tempo and feel of the song.

Pretty damn good for his first drum solo :D I've watched this video so many times, and Gavin Harrison is one of my all time favourite drummers. Drops his stick but it's barely noticeable at all!

I did see him drop a stick. I saw him reach for a tube and put it in his mouth apparently attached to a drum that was supposed to give a sound affect.
