I found it was really easy to buy cheaper art supplies when I was first starting out. BUT then when I got better and better and started investing in high quality materials and found the brands I liked, I then donated all of what I was no longer using to a friend. She took them to Africa and she and her sister were teaching art classes to children out in the bush. The watercolors were a huge success and she said that the teacher was obsessed and wouldn't stop using them. So... you don't have to send what you aren't using across the globe--but I guarantee you can find a local art teacher, preschool or even Senior Center activities director who would happily accept donations and get a lot of use and joy out of them. Now I know what I like as well and don't venture out too far of my box. And I don't feel guilty about the money I had to spend to get where I am today and while I do drop a lot of money when I need to restock, its ok :)

I enjoy vintage oak office furniture and Machinists chests. My graphite pencils, erasers, stumps, mechanical pencils, etc. fit in the chest. My paper supplies are in an old lawyers cabinet which has a sliding wooden slab to put paper on as you are looking for that certain type. Watercolors and colored pencils are in a lawyer stacking bookcase. I work at an old library table which has drawers for my most often used supplies. I do have a modern lamp to see what I am doing. It’s just a corner of the living room but it works for me.

100% agree Jess. Years of experience has taught me, that if it's not organised and ready to use. You often lose that idea/spark of inspiration in just getting your supplies ready. Occasionally you lose that initial thought or idea all together! Keep it organised and ready. You get way more done. Great advice. Keep watching Jess and you'll do just fine. 🙂

Best tip: I like that you have a separate space for replacements or duplicates. That way you use up all of one before adding another to the "in use" drawer. Many people with "too many supplies" have too many of the same colors or types in use at once. When you use one up before opening another, voila, chaos is reduced.

Great video! Love organizing tips even if I do some of those things already, I always get motivated to clean up and re-organize my space :D One add for people on a budget: Shoeboxes are great for storage. Especially those sturdier ones from more expensive brands (and those look most of the time quite nice too!) I cant afford to buy those brands but some stores are willing to to give them to you because many customers don't want them themselfs! (I worked at a store with a shoe department so my colleagues were collecting them for me, BUT if a customer asked for some boxes and we had spare ones they could have them for free too!)

If you have the space for a rolling tool chest that has lots of smaller drawers on top and cabinets on the bottom I highly recommend that as art storage. The drawers are great for separating your art supplies and the cabinets or larger drawers work well for organizing paper, canvases and sketchbooks. Its also easy to label the drawers so that you can see what each one has in it and you can add smaller baskets inside for further brand or colour sorting.

I use a glass shelf that I found in the as-is section in ikea as my palette. I designate an area for each type of supply in my room so when that area gets full I only keep my favourites. That way every thing in my room is only stuff that makes me happy. I use the Andrew Mellen stuff triangle for organising, with the bullseye technique for placement of items. It makes me feel content in my creative process/space.

I noticed then I have a hard time reaching or I stop using because it’s such a small size I can never find out that it’s there. Any idea on how to use up in store pencils that became a smaller size…
@raindance1682 жыл бұрын
I think the answer might be to store them flat in trays/utensil organizers that you can get to quickly or put on your workspace, as demonstrated in the first part with graphite pencils. Or just have a tray (or trays) dedicated to pencil stubs, and see if that works.

This is so brilliant, Jess, like everything you do. I am going to reorganize again. Thank you so much. I have my art studio on the dinner table in my small condo, in Reykjavík, Iceland. I would need one room more in my flat for an art studio. That is not an option. My art supplies are cluttere on my table, in he shelves nearby, in closed boxes, all the way in my bedroom, I have shelves there and an Ikea writing desk, that I can change how high (me standing) or how low (me sitting), the desk is cluttered. Also, I do not work at all on the desk in my bedroom bc. I have sleeping problems. I am not an artist, I am an attorney at Law, in a long sick leave, well "a disabled former attorney". However, sadly, I need to rest every 20 minutes when I am painting or trying to paint because of my health condition. I am a beginner. Jess, you are so young, beautiful woman, but such a talented, artist, full of energy,. I find it is is like magic how much painting you do, in all the mediums, Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor etc. Perhaps you were a maigic, wonder child, now a wonder woman, your family must be so proud of you, Jess. Thank you for sharing, I love your paintings, your work, I am your fan. xo Helga.

I really like the look of glass but sometimes I don't want it to be see thru. (Idk I know it makes no sense) so I put paper inside the glass and then my pencils and it gives a clear look with whatever paper I put in. I like it!

My main problem in storing brushes is keeping them safe from my cat. She adores brushes. If I leave them unattended on the table for just a minute, the brushes will be dragged away and chewed 😢

Something really basic, but I like to use old cans to store brushes, pens, markers, ect. I couldn't find any cheap jars, unfortunately, but what I did have was the cans from the vegetable soup I made. They come in different sizes and as long as you make sure the edges are smooth (no sharp jags from a can opener, ect) then they work great. That's what 95% of my upright supplies are in.
