This is awesome to see, watching someone tell you about a different branch of your own style and compare-contrast the techniques/curriculum. These interviews are awesome. Now that I’m practicing Bajiquan, I see a lot of similarities between that style of kung-fu and the Goju Ryu that I’ve been training in for 15 years now.

I have not trained in Kenpo, but I never tire of seeing it presented, particularly as it has been on this channel. Thank you, Dan, for bringing it into the market place of ideas.

Was looking forward to this interview, and was not dissappointed. Though I love how Mr Vidal is talking about parker taking from other arts, and immediately says he doesn't want to start any fights. I think most Kenpoists already know that Parker took from other arts, and blended them into his art, personally it is one of the things I love about the style.

Yes, it has actually been a surprise to see just how many arts Ed Parker crossed paths with. It seems everyone I talk to either was part of Kenpo or personally knew Ed Parker at some point. He had a wide reach apparently.

The first art I ever studied was TKD through the South Milwaukee Parks and Rec Dept; we met in a balcony storage space at the local middle school. The teacher, Mr. Sorce was very good and had trained in Korea for quite a while. Only a few years after that, he was able to get his own space and has had one ever since. If I ever move back, I'd love to study Danzan-Ryu Jiu-jitsu under him. That absolutely taught me to look at the teacher and the class, not the location/setting when determining quality.

Great interview! I too got my karate training out of community centers as opposed to commercial dojo. Whenever I train in a proper dojo, it feels like a posh suite compared to how I was coming up.

Thank you Sensei Dan for bringing us, this insightful and revealing interview with Grandmaster Darryl Vidal. It is humbling and admirable, to see that someone of his level of skill, experience and fighting calibre, can be so humble, humorous, open minded and so exemplary, for us to aspire to emulate. Too often highly ranked martial artists like him, tend to become at times narcissistic, self centred and also too distant and lacking of accessibility, patience and benevolence to others of a lower rank. I most definitely agree with Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, that teaching makes become far more better martial artists, given that when instructing others, we truly need to analyse, also examine and scrutinise ourselves, to see if we train and perform our techniques correctly, accurately and with practical effectiveness. Too often prior to teaching, I can see that many high ranked students, just simply go through the motions, often without truly thinking or analysing their techniques, in terms of power, posture, balance, as well as effectiveness. If a student can successfully replicate effectively what we are teaching them, then we can see in turn, that we ourselves are performing it well, in our own individual training and practice. Grandmaster Darryl Vidal is absolutely correct, in saying that in order to become a well trained, effective, knowledgeable and experienced martial artist, we should at least attain the black belt level rank, as an indicator of a solid foundation, prior to progressing to learn and incorporating, the skills sets of another combat system. Too often many individuals, learn an amalgamation of various techniques, from several self defense systems, without fully having learnt those techniques or principles thoroughly. This leaves such an individual with an incomplete, lack of mastery of anything fully well accomplished and thorough. I sincerely had hoped that the Cobra Kai producers, writers, directors and so forth, would have brought Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, back into the series as a master of his own dojo, or perhaps team him up with Sensei Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his dojo's students, kind of like with Daniel Larusso teaming up with Chozen in season 5 it seems. I say so given that at least from the first Karate Kid film, although being adversaries in previous tournaments, throughout the years, it seems that Sensei Johnny Lawrence did respect Sensei Vidal. Looking forward to any further video collaborations, that you might be doing with Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, Sensei Dan, as such thank you for doing such awesome KZbin interviews Grandmaster Darryl Vidal, greatly appreciate it 🙏 🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋Osu!

I am another disappointed fan of The Karate Kid for the absence of Darryl Vidal in Cobra Kai. C'mon Cobra Kai producers. I'm not sure where I heard it - could have been on the late John Avildsen's commentary on The Karate Kid - that everyone who has watched The Karate Kid and knows martial arts knew that "Vidal" (as he is referred to by Pat E. Johnson in the movie) was a real martial artist and would have cleaned up The All Valley if it were for real.

There no such thing as retiring from martial arts that’s ridiculous 😂 and why are there so many different types of Kempo .
@ArtofOneDojo
@ArtofOneDojo 11 ай бұрын
Why are there so many types of Jujutsu? Why are there so many types of Karate? Why are there so many types Kung fu? Same reason why there are many types of Kenpo...different people split off and form other branches and the system goes through different countries and will merge with culture and local fighting systems and continue to propogate. The different Kempos are actually significantly different systems from each other. American Kenpo, Hawaiian Kempo, Mr. Vidal's Chinese Kenpo here....are all VERY different systems despite all coming from the same root teacher.
