My advice after 50 years in the martial arts is summed up in the saying, "Argue your limitations, and they are yours." Let life set your limits. It doesn't need any help :-)

I did TKD for about six years. Second degree black. Our grandmaster would talk a lot about you. Learn how to “destroy the body “with our techniques. He would always follow that up with “now learn how to heal the body “. Your own, as well as how to heal others. He was also Christian and talked about healing, spiritual/mental side too.

This is the higher elements to traditional martial arts. We need to show the difference between modern vs traditional isn’t in the combat, but the evolution of what a human can be as we age. MMA is better in straight up fighting, but that’s only the tiger, the dragon makes a martial art more complete.

In the twin cats style of Kempo: our crest was represented by a Yin/Yang with a white tiger & a black jaguar (panther) encircling the symbol. It's meaning is that of duality/opposition/balance - which we all face in life, the white tiger: the light, the known aspect of our identity, order. The black jaguar: the darker aspect of ourselves, the unknown & hidden, chaos. ☯️

Very timely as I have speaking about these issues with my sensei. At 62 I feel the changes accelerating, I'm thinking of adding yoga into my workouts which now include cycling, martial arts, weight training and some hiking. I don't want to give up my martial arts but its a struggling watching the twenty somethings train. Hips, back , shoulders and even vision are all not what they once were. At the end when Master Wallace spoke of adding different disciplines to the seminars, I thought that was very insightful ( kind of reminds me of the mantra of ever improving and learning).

Sir, training Shotokan/Shorin Ryu. Your guest points about mindset are spot on. The psychology of aging is truly in the mind of the person. Having a positive attitude, consistent training, and looking internally are in my view the keys to longer training. Think of it as Dr. Phil for the martial arts. Keep it up.

I'm 54 now, and have been training since I was 9 years old. Years of tough training and a parachute accident in the Army has not helped my body any. No more jump spin kicks for me. 😆 Treachery and guile are the name of the game. I work on greater efficiency and more emphasis of weaponry as a force multiplier. Things which I should have focused on in my youth as well in hindsight.

Something else the martial arts can do for us is create new synaptic pathways in the brain. This drastically reduces the chance of Alzheimer’s in our advance years by replacing the blocked or lost pathway’s. This is simply done by learning something new. As Super Foot said, “All you need is one take-away.”

I love this video. Even though I 45. The injuries and wear down of my body are taking their toll. With some styles, you can hide it because you may not be the judge of physical contact. I also do BJJ, and you are always judged on physical contact. It is humbling. In my mind I'm younger but now I'm competing with my own inabilities. Which is hard. I'm learning to change my thinking.

Well done video. It's refreshing to take time out from pure contact and analyze the mental components of being a practitioner. Adapting knowledge to physical limitations is a wise pursuit. Aging is inevitable. It's not for sissies. What we do to stay as active as possible is critical to our survival. When we stop moving, we stop moving. Students gathering from around the world to learn as one is a valuable experience. That knowledge passes on. Be well Mr. Dan. Peace to 🇺🇦 Ukraine, and around the world.

I have been involved in the martial arts for over 3 decades and hit 60 this year. That included judo and ground fighting, along with the stand up. Over the years I've had injuries and am nursing my way through a couple now (hoping that my knee won't require surgery). I have always found a way to work around the injury, at least as to some aspect of my art (I had my right bicep tendon ripped from the bone ground fighting my instructor Feb. 1996, which I had surgically repaired; I tore the other one last year testing and I'm not getting that one surgically fixed). I encourage you to keep pursuing knowledge of the arts by videos and attending classes - even as a spectator - while you rehab. It's a small step from the thing visualized to its enactment.

This is one of the disadvantages of the sport side of the martial arts, in my opinion. There's a lot of good that comes out of it, but there's also a tendency to emphasize the young and the strong and the physically gifted. Historically, martial arts has been a lot more than that. That was one reason I tried to integrate a chess class into my martial arts classes when I was teaching.

Awesome seminar with Master Sean Kelly of American Kenpo Karate. Such a charismatic, motivating, inspirational, humble and exemplary individual, to inspire many of us by his words and actions most important! I like how he is dedicating part of his teaching position, to help the rehabilitation of older people in our society, regardless of whether they are martial artists or not. I also like how he gives focus and attention, in helping to empower children and youths, have been victims of bullying! Sensei Dan have you ever thought of interviewing Master Sean Kelly, so as to get to know him and his work, both inside the dojo and outside in the community? Looking forward to more videos such as this 🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋Osu!

So I have a question I'm starting kenpo again after 10 years, And I just had a trial class with the sunset and he said hes gonna put me back to the belt I held previously. Is this a taboo? Or something that is weird?
@ArtofOneDojo
@ArtofOneDojo 2 жыл бұрын
Not taboo at all, it's actually very common for a Kenpo instructor to allow you to wear your previous Kenpo rank. You did work for it after all. What USUALLY happens though is you'll wear that rank while you go through the current curriculum until you catch up to where you were at before and then progress from there. It's not taboo at all.

i would suggest that those kids from the fundraiser, should receive Homeopathic treatment besides their allopathic 1, and then gradually reducing the chemo and radio, until it can be replaced entirely. Homeopathy has works wonders for me, and I was so sick I would have died.
@ArtofOneDojo

Are you talking about the Kids Kicking Cancer charity? If so then with all due respect, I disagree. Homeopathic "medicine" is not a suitable substitute for real medical practice, and most of the time don't even contain the trace elements of the ingredients they're supposed to. I'm sorry but recommending this over established treatment is dangerous advice.
