DIY homemade embossing powder using 2 simple ingredients:
Acrylic floor wax, Vinegar, and Glycerine. Ad sparkle to your Art.
This was taught to me as a child by Catholic Nuns in the 1960's. The benefits of a private education. It is what we did to make colored crystals for our art pieces. Music and Art appreciation are required subjects in private Catholic elementary schools. I don't believe public schools teach these subjects. All my videos on DIY Art Medium come from things we did everyday in Art class as a boy.

I did that painting, so yes, I do have nearly every color under the sun😂. But, I prefer CLEAR, and I have unruly pets 😂. I'm also going to try that powdered stuff they use on fake nails (I don't have them, I am more of a TomBoy 😊 error, TomOldLady😂). So, we shall see because at 3am I did some sort of calculations and 1 week later 2.2#'s came in the mail 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Several years ago I saw a similar video, so figured I would make some. When I did go to but the acrylics wax a similar size bottle was $7-$ 9! I decided to just go for a small bottle of embossing powder, and it keeps over time and once you cover your inked design, and return rest to bottle, you have hardly used any. I still have my original bottles as I had gotten several different colors. But after the pandemic we experienced in 2020, I am very glad to know just how to make this stuff, as we never know what shortages we may experience in coming disasters, God forbid there are any other disasters! But thank you for your knowledge !

They make these little silicone spatulas about half an inch or smaller in various lengths and quality often used by acrylic resin work. They would help you scrape the bowl to get all the bits initially. And helps in other steps of the process no doubt too. Some use only wood sticks like tongue supressers but they may be helpful too. And there are similar silicone covered wood tools too. Anyway this process is fascinating. I never had a degree in chemistry but had quite a few college courses and always got A+ in all of my labs. I don't think I ever took any lab I didn't excel in even when I did not do as well in the actual lecture class. I always thought it hilarious but if often saved me from lower grades when averaged. Loved watching this video and tutorial though. Thank you and love it. I plan to use a mortar and pestle instead of the grinder. But they make lovely spice electric grinders that might be useful. (My husband stole my first grinder in the 70's that I bought to make flours like rice flour and oat flour and grind my spices for pizza and italian and salads for COFFEE BEANS. I don't drink coffee. It finally broke 4 years ago so I bought HIM a lovely new one that has stainless extra cups and blades that allow you to use it without fighting over it for our various different interests. I wouldn't mix my craft supplies mind you with food use. Just better safe. I enjoyed this video and loved the idea of maybe not making an exact product replacement but making something even more fun. Cost probably is savings if you count the time. There's a new technique where people are using single pancake griddles about 4 inches to 8 inches to replace the use of a heat gun. Really works great. Use a piece of parchment paper not wax paper on the griddle to protect it. Also again don't use for food if you worry about such. So no a heat gun is not the ONLY instrument and my neighbor and I have discovered we both love the little wee heat plates or mini griddles instead of the heat guns which too can be expensive. Thanks for your tutorial and did find it valuable.

Hello.. I'm from Indonesia I want to let you know, if it's difficult to get a quick shine cleanser, or pledge... you can try it with Mr. muscle that contains acrylic. I made embossing powder from Mr. Muscle..it worked. But the level of acrylic is only 2%, so I get just a little embossed powder, mr. muscle mixed with vinegar. but without water, because the acrylic content is only a little.

Hi. Thank you for this wonderful video, you are such a blessing to have shared your knowledge with us!!!! I managed to find a product in South Africa called Pledge High Shine. The only challenge that I'm facing is that the floor polish contains brown colouring and therefore my embossing powder is a light brown. Is there a way that I could strip the colour out of the polish without affecting the chemical composition? Again thank you so much!!!!
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 2 жыл бұрын
I am thrilled you like. That would be tricky. You could dilute the wax with water and add extra vinegar to see if that will take out more of the color. The acrylic comes out of solution when the pH drops. The only next step would be to bleach it, but that raises the pH. The bleach won't hurt the acrylic, but you have to bring it back much farther with vinegar. Have you watched this? I make Embossing powder with milk. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpvQkIOKiZ2YnNk

It's the first thing I think of when I think of acrylic, because I started doing acrylic nails back in 1989. I have tons of that stuff, and I believe you can buy it in different colors, as well. Thank you so much. This is amazing. I want to make it right now. I have everything I need, except for glycerin (actually, i have an old container of glycerin suppositories from when my brother lived with me, lol. Maybe that could work for whatever the glycerin is needed??) After watching a few times, I'm still not understanding what to do with the glycerin an how much glycerin I would be adding to the piece of paper? You spoke of glycerin being in the inks we crafters use. I just can't figure out how glycerin or ink comes into play. When you do bring the glycerin in, it looked like you only wiped what little glycerin had been touching the funnel you had in the bottle of glycerin onto the piece of paper and that was it? Is this accurate? What am I missing? Could I take one of the glycerin cones I have and cut off a tiny bit, melt it, and rub onto the piece of paper once I get it to be a liquid? I have several cards I am making currently and found you and your awesome video as I love embossing, but I can't afford to buy anything right now.

Thanks for your comment. Ah yes, I had to watch my own video. It is 3 years old. Yes, there is glycerine in ink, to keep it from drying too fast I guess. Maybe help it flow more evenly, but it would work great as a color substitute for the Glycerine, perhaps you saw that. Also, check out some of the comments as folks have shared what other things can substitute for Acrylic Floor Wax. Good luck, have fun.

@GEOsustainable Thanks for your reply. Oh yes, I have already read through all the comments. I find that I can get great ideas by reading through them! Perhaps I should have read my own comment that was a question for you, as I may have been all over the place versus asking a clear question. Sorry for that!!! I have all the needed ingredients as well as tools, with the exception of liquid glycerin. What i have is a few leftover glycerin suppositories from when my apparently, constipated brother lived with me! My question was, can I use a little piece of this solid glycerin? 2nd part of this question, with the liquid glycerin you used, it looked as though you placed just a very small little Smudge of your liquid glycerin onto the piece of paper you were about to place your newly extracted and now solid form acrylic onto prior to return to heat to be melted. If I am incorrect on it looking like the amount of glycerin you are adding is just a smudge from the funnel that had been located in the bottle of liquid glycerin, please let me know if/when you happen to see this new and hopefully easier to understand question. Ps, I subscribed to your channel immediately after watching this awesome video!!! My passion is all forms of arts and crafts, card making is my newest craft. Alcohol ink on prepped canvas, anything ceramic, glass, and marble actually pays the cost of new supplies, but if I am able to make some of these supplies, I would sure LOVE to actually put a little bit of the $ earned from Alcohol ink pieces into my pocket I would be so happy!

Use acrylic paint if you are precipitating your Embossing powder from acrylic wax (it will become a solid color), use food color if you are precipitating your Embossing powder from milk (It will remain transparent).

The wax must contain acrylic, as I demonstrated in the begin. Many wax may seem to contain, but do not. I can only suggest that you confirm that it contains acrylic by a percentage, as wax makers are happy to tell you. I can offer you to email me, and I can help you achieve success. My email is in the description of every video. I urge you to contact me so we can go through the steps.

@@GEOsustainable I used the exact same product you did, which is why I'm so dumbfounded it won't melt. I'll give it another whirl tomorrow, maybe it wasn't fully dry, although I would think if it is nearly dry the heat gun would be able to nuke it to melting even if still slightly moist. And I have a dual heat heatgun that does get very hot. I'll try again now that it has really had time to air out and see what I can achieve. I am also still trying to find a way to grind it to a finer powder which I think would surely help with my problem as well but I don't want to use the mortar I intend to use for edibles. Tried a ziploc and rolling pin to little success, I may take a hammer to it next 😆 Thanks for your reply, I appreciate you taking the time!

@GEOsustainable

The measurements are not important. You must see how much to use. What you will recover is based on the percent of solids in your wax. 25% solids will yeild 25% of the amount that you pour into your vinegar. I hope this helps.

Thanks for pointing out where I went wrong. I am going to watch and see what you are talking about. But I don't recall anything about inks or paints. Either way, 99% of the time, even when I do something I have done a million times, once you turn on a camera, everything goes wrong. I may have not had anything to show you at the end. Not like I can recreate a moment in time. This video is about precipitating Acrylic out of floor wax, nothing more. And an attempt to make something. Now, I am not saying this is what to make, I am just giving ideas.
