“In many ways it is almost impossible to fully process the loss of someone like Bluiett and I’ve had a hard time doing so. For most of my professional career as a jazz musician, he has been a true mentor and friend, a walking embodiment of the spirit of being fearlessly, no-holds-barred “at the moment” in one’s playing, listening, sometimes cajoling, and always reacting to others. I can think of countless examples, like when Bluiett came across the stage to yank my music off the stand in front of 10,000 people at his hometown jazz festival when I was adhering too “closely” to the material in my improvisations. This concert, then, is a collective attempt to reflect on his deep impact (including by featuring some of the pieces he loved to play, as jumping off points), in which I’m honored to be joined by other bandmates whom he also deeply touched. I hope you enjoy it.” - D.D. Jackson

The multi-Emmy-winning composer D.D. Jackson began his career as a jazz pianist/composer and went on to record, perform, and tour with some of the most acclaimed names in jazz and beyond, including drummer Jack Dejohnette, and saxophonists James Carter and David Murray. He has collaborated frequently with Questlove and "The Roots,” both in live performance and as an arranger/producer/pianist. Jackson has recorded 13 jazz CDs featuring his original compositions, two operas, and composes music for television, film and other media. He has won 2 Emmy's, among his 5 total nominations. www.ddjackson.com/
“To hear saxophonist James Carter is to be blown away,” wrote the 'Washington Post'. From moonlit ballads to funky workouts to the most cerebral kind of post-bop, in an intimate club or on a sprawling festival stage, the Detroit-born saxophone master can seem to deliver all of jazz history in a single set. Carter harbors a command of his instruments that is astonishingly complete, though he only employs that technique in the service of canny ideas. Even when he appears on the verge of shattering his horn, he’s evoking early jazz, jump blues, the avant-garde and other lessons residing inside his vast, scholarly knowledge of the music of the African-American experience.

Darius Jones has created a recognizable voice as a saxophonist and composer by embracing individuality and innovation in the tradition of African-American music. With NYC as his base, Jones has toured around the United States, Canada and Europe. Jones was one of Jazz Times' Debut Artists of the Year for 2009 and was featured in the Wall Street Journal in 2011, and in 'DownBeat' in 2012. Critics have called him "robustly creative" (Nate Chinen, NYT) and "one of NYC's most incisive and passionate saxists" (Time Out). www.jumasultan....
William Parker is a bassist, improviser, composer, writer, and educator from New York City, heralded by The Village Voice as, “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.” In addition to recording over 150 albums, he has published six books and taught and mentored hundreds of young musicians and artists.

A versatile drummer who also plays vibes and marimba, Ronnie Burrage has forged a style as much at home with the bristling pace of hard bop and bebop as with the heavy backbeats of funk, soul and R&B. He accompanied Arthur Blythe, Jackie McLean, Andrew Hill and McCoy Tyner and played in the Woody Shaw quintet in the mid-'80s, then formed Third Kind of Blue with John Purcell and Anthony Cox in 1986. ronnieburrage.biz/

Juma Sultan’s musical talents span jazz, rock, blues, spirituals and world music (aboriginal music). Juma also recorded with Sonny Simmons, Archie Shepp, Noah Howard, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Aboriginal Music Society, Emmeretta Marks, Asha Nan. www.jumasultan....
