This application of the stitch on leather comes with an added level of difficulty due to its location. But we don't get to chose where the damage is. In the field we adjust and get with it.

Sir, you are an amazing artisan and your generosity in teaching us is so appreciated! I have been able to make a repair on a similar tear in the driver's seat of my husband's truck. I ordered leather fill and matching leather dye to make the entire seat look new again. Thank you for sharing your craft!

that's kinda a stich I learned when I was a kid (mother was a dress maker/ Re-upholster the free couch type) restoring a car now so trying to relearn. Her stich doubled back to the start and was called the "like this" stich.

Great video! But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why you create a brand new hole to pull the final tail out of (to tuck the knot). Just come out through a pre-existing seam or pre-existing hole. I know the hole you’re making is tiny and almost imperceptible, but it just seems unnecessary when there’s so many other options readily at hand.

You're right, and we usually do. If you've ever found yourself at the end and your fingers are so sore you can hardly work the needle and you' have a cramp in your back from leaning over for a half hour in a twisted position you'd find some relief in coming out of the seat as easily as is convenient. In this case, the high mileage vehicle is getting some refinishing on both of these panels anyway which included a few seconds with the glue/sand technique not just in that hole but in the open abrasion across the panel at the mid French seam as well. I didn't highlight that since the focus for the video was the stitching. Hope that helps.

Would nylon thread be ok to use? It said that it's upholstery thread, but would it stretch too much using it on a seat? Thanks.

Good eye Leo. Of course we suspected this might be the case "since we don't have the luxury of tapering our repair" as stated in the video.

I am looking for the "chisel" needle and can't find a vendor. Can you help me with this? Also, does the backside of the chisel act as a cutting edge as some "cutting" suture needles do?

@@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 I find curved needles that are round however I am not able to find the description of a chisel needle. I thought I heard you mention a chisel needle. Do you use a round needle or a triangular needle? Would you please clarify this for me. If you would send a link to where you obtain your needles and thread that would be very much appreciated!

Are you still using regular thread or are you using a special thicker leather thread?

It is specifically sold as hand sewing thread and is heavier than you would typically use in a standard machine.

A.R.T. Thanks so much for a clear no fuss video, just what I was looking for to repair my Range Rover split leather seam ! If it helps you, as a fellow KZbinr, I would like to mention you on my channel called GrooveOn (kzbin.info/door/NDYsTCUo6KQ3RU4QLs4OqA), where I specialise in repairs on vehicles and diagnostic trouble shooting. I am currently creating a series on how I bought a cheap Range Rover and the repairs I need to do, of which the drivers seat seam was one of those fixes, thanks to you !
