If the leather was mostly so well connected to the table why not fix the leather rather than replace?
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247

Yes, well replacing the leather was the whole reason I was presented the job. It was also necessary to repair the water damage on the wood also. Truth be told, repairing would have been absurd in this scenario. There is an example of repair on a leather table top in v149 you might like.

Question - When using the plastic primer, you mentioned a flex additive. What is the flex additive's property (liquid, gel, cream)? Thank you for the video. I have spoken to many technicians who have shared the perils of body oil transfer on headrests and arms. I have to admit I am one of them. Most, if not all, are concerned about the phone call 3 - 6 months later because the customer reports the repair had failed and is coming apart. The failure is that their water-based repair system cannot adhere to the oil-impregnated leather area. In fact many techs wouldn't even touch this type of repair. Your repair step negates their bad experience (and puts more money in our pockets). Any info you have on that would be most appreciated.

Hi Rick, I do these sort of jobs all the time but the prep takes me a long time as I've been taught that I need to deep clean, ( soft brush and leather cleaner ) then sand down, rub down with acetone and alcohol( to remove and traces of top coat and surface bodily oils), prime the leather as there still maybe traces of top coat sealer and then the colouring and finally sealing it with a top coat. Are you saying this isn't needed? Can you tell me what prep you did? Was also told colour won't adhere to top coat due to there being silicones in the top coat. Sorry for the long winded message but this would save me hours in prep work 🙏

@@stuartboyle3003 Thanks for the comment. Usually I'm critiqued for being too heavy handed on the prep. The scuff pad IS sanding. And the butyl degreaser is stronger than anything anyone else would dare use. See the 3 part series on The Art of Cleaning and Surface Preparation. I should mention the top coat thing on an update. Appreciate the idea

@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 Thanks Rick! Yes mate, I'm super critical on the prep as it's been ingrained in me but still have failures with separation of colour sometimes only a few months later, also bodily oils that have been trapped in the topcoat and haven't migrated through to the leather, the leather looks and feels fine and then a few months later the area is sticky because the new colour I put on has pulled the oils out and into the new colour. Very frustrating! Wish there was a fail safe way to avoid this. Would love a video on just this process. No one seems to have the answer, so im hoping you do. Love your work mate, your a credit to the industry!!!🙏

That would be great Rick, I would really appreciate it. Have been doing this for 20 years and I still don't have answers. Alot of the time I'm hoping the job I did a year or 2 ago is just as good as the day I left it.I would just love to have that confidence in knowing I've done everything right and used the correct procedures to know that the restoration will last for many years to come. This should be a given in this industry but I'm afraid that people just dodge it or fob you off and say you must be doing something wrong which isn't the case so you just carry on and deal with it with fingers crossed. Not great. Thanks again, I look forward to seeing what you have in store 🙏👍

As always Rick thank you for sharing, this is certainly a great improvement over using glue or as we used to years ago clear silicone, and the fibers and before that shaving fuzz off of the seat - yeah I'm that old ... Unfortunately, many if not most of the repair guys (I won't call them "techs" that would be too generous) are in the biz for fast and often sloppy repairs for dealers who just want it "good enough to get it off the lot" But for those who want to improve their skills, this is a great option. I've been playing around with it since you told me about it some months ago, we don't do a lot of cloth repairs these days but the few that I have done turned out much better and I feel that the repairs will hold up a lot better. Since there are no more Detroit sample books and the availability of fabric for newer vehicles is getting worse, this will be a good option vs just having to buy a new OEM seat cover from the dealership.
