I've been doing traditional figure drawing for the past couple of years, and from my experience, I only needed to learn Zbrush as a software which takes a couple of weeks to be able to sculpt characters. Because the concepts of Gesture, Structure and Anatomy are global skills that apply to everything from Pen&Paper to Zbrush to Clay etc. If you have a good knowledge of gesture, and if your lines (brush strokes) follow the form and create good harmony, even your lack of anatomical knowledge will be ignored to a degree and you would get good results in short time. So it doesn't matter if you study sketching, but sketching is the fastes way to grasp those concepts in my opinion.
