Today we are going to review the brand new set of 24 metallic watercolor paints by Artsy available on Amazon (affiliate links used) amzn.to/38MJVq3 *there is an extra 10% off coupon on this product at the time of recording making it an even better deal.
This paint set comes in an attractive aqua blue tin wrapped in a soft cloth. The outer packaging is a sturdy cardboard box you can reuse. This would be pretty as a gift as it looks very high end much like the Paul Rubens paint sets I have reviewed in the past for 25% less money. Each pan is wrapped in a mylar wrapper that lists its color number. I recommend writing that number on the pan so you will know what color is what when you swatch. I did not do this and I could not match the colors on the swatch card afterward. It's not a really big deal but when I wanted to compare it to colors of the same number in another set I had a hard time matching them up.
Pros:
*Price ($10 cheaper than the paul rubens set and there is an additional 10% off coupon at time of recording)
*Nice color selection
*Rewets easily
*Opaque on black (colors look different on black or white so be sure to swatch)
*Beautiful metal palette, high end packaging
*Includes waterbrush
Cons:
*The order of the swatch sheet did not match the order of paint in the palette. See note about labeling your pans as you unwrap them.
*Some colors appeared identical on black, two greens show up as gold on black and one green looks silver. Although there are 3 greens no of them look green on black which is a shame because if you like to use metallics for Christmas projects on black you are limited. I think the green colorant must be transparent so when mixed with the mica you only see the metallic pigments. It is pretty on white tho.
I felt obligated to compare this to the Paul Ruben metallic watercolor paint set amzn.to/36H3KNJ to see if they were the same as they are packaged and presented so similarily. I had reviewed them in the past and they turned out to be my favorite paints (although more expensive than most) see full comparison here. I will update this post with Artsy later: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.co... All but 2 color numbers were the same between sets however I found the paints in the PR set to be more glittery and a shade more translucent and the Artsy paint to be more opaque and satiny like a metallic gouache. It may be the more glitter colors were the ones not in the Artsy kit but overall the sheen was different. Also the palette was a different body (you can fit a row of pans down the center of the PR palette but not Artsy) and the pan shape was different. The Artsy set is $10 cheaper thou and the quality difference is pretty small to the effect that If I didn't compare them side by side I would have thought the artsy paints were the same.
Bottom line: the packaging and attractive tin, as well as beautiful quality paint, make this set a nice gift. I wish the greens showed true on black as I mostly use metallic watercolors on black and 8 of the colors show up as gold on black. If you plan on mainly painting on white paper these are lovely and jewel-toned similar to Twinkling H2Os. The shimmer shows well on white and often with metallics the shimmer is not that apparent on white. I would recommend these to cardmakers and painters manly working on white or gouache users because you can underpaint green in areas if need be. The tin is so pretty it begs ti be reused long after the paint is used up. I think it is a good value for the price.
