That's it. I've been looking at and enjoying tutorial videos of colored pencil art for a good while, for techniques, experience, practical suggestions, clarity, and simplicity. And a little humor. But that empathic awareness of the cognitive place of the untrained beginner, that the competent artist left behind years ago, that is what marks a gifted teacher. I have found my teacher. Subscribing today.

The color selection process-worth it’s weight in gold. I’m guilty of over-purchasing, and that just leads to distraction. I can see this being a foundational change for me. Thank you!

I've gone with the Faber Castel 60 piece Polychromos set but the first thing I've done is a manual colour chart on a whole A4 sheet, with all the numbers and names. I won't lie, I like having a larger set and I don't mind spending a little extra since I don't spend money on entertainment very much (like going to pubs often). Anyway, the manual colour chart makes it much more easier to set my needed colours aside rather than looking at the wooden texture of the pencil.

This was SUCH an awesome video! It was so detailed, and covered all the aspects I could've hoped for (the drawing part was super helpful). I'm a painter and I've never used colored pencils for realism like this before. I was surprised that you didn't grab any reds to desaturate the green, and it turned out beautifully. I think it's great that you recommend such limited supplies. I can't wait to try this now. Thanks so much!

To get more fine lines such as hair in a portrait is it any use to use pens with the coloured pencils? How are people gettinf such a refined result with just the coloured pencils. As well if you sketch first in pencil then its hard to remove the grey.

Nice! But the brand isn't completely irrelevant. The typical Caran d'Ache pencils are watercolour and will never produce the kind o vibrant colours oil/wax based ones do (at least not using the same techniques). Trust me, I have years of frustration trying to understand why my drawings always looked washed out and not like the ones in the drawing books (the internet is such a great thing!).
@PhilDaviesArtist

I was talking about traditional coloured pencils (wax/oil based) rather than water-soluble pencils, which I consider I different medium.
@XofHope
@XofHope 4 жыл бұрын
@@PhilDaviesArtist Certainly, but it doesn't hurt mentioning it, since there may be many beginners watching. When it comes to Cd'A, in my country, I've never seen other than the watercolor ones. Until very recently I wasn't even aware they also made wax/oil pencils. But my alert was mostly for people who may not even be aware that the techniques are very different and working dry with watercolor pencils will never resemble what you did here. As a beginner it happened to me, I wasn't aware of the difference and it resulted in a lot of frustration.

@@XofHope so what's the best pencils???I need help D:
@XofHope
@XofHope 3 жыл бұрын
@@devconnors9462 It really depends on what you want to achieve. When coloured pencils are mentioned it's usually the oil/wax based ones, like in this tutorial. I can't help with which brands are best because I don't actually use them. Water colour pencils usually produce softer, less vibrant pieces because they're meant to be watered down, just like watercolours. They can produce something more ethereal, more painterly and less realistic than the good wax based ones. I really don't know how else to explain it... search for watercolour pencil drawings and tutorials and see the difference yourself.
@roxanneosterling9009
@roxanneosterling9009 Жыл бұрын
Some people do need all those pencils of different colors because they are not skilled at understanding color theory and how to make colors from other colors. So just because you can make every color you need with 24 pencils doesn't mean that everyone else can and that would mean that yes they do need those pencils.
