Phil, I wanted to thank you for the informative and helpful tutorial. Your explanation of how and why you chose those colours with such a limited palette was very enlightening. It was helpful to see how you started laying down the colours and creating transitions. Your thought process was well-described and easy to follow. Additionally, I really appreciate your easy-to-listen voice.

It’s the simple subjects which teach best, I think. All paintings are made of simple subjects, each needs individual attention and then continuity within the composition.

Great to watch this excellent demo again after several years. I needed a refresher lesson, and it’s really very thorough. After the first time I watched it, I did a very satisfying drawing of a doorway from the south of France, which is now framed and hung up. Thanks again Phil.

Phil, thank you for the pear drawing. Have tried 2 drawings with watercoloured pencils. Watered one and not the other. It might be the brand of pencils but better with the watered one. Loved the exercise. Getting quite excited with what I’m trying. 😀👍 Judy E. Aust.

Thank you for this great lesson. I'm a complete beginner but still managed to pick up a few valuable tips eg. mixing /transitioning colours or living the highlights free. I would be grateful for some general advice as to paper; should it be smooth or toothy etc. When I draw the paper gets clogged up and won't take more pencil at some point.

Thank you. A very useful exercise. I did use a blender pen, however, because I unwisely (I'm still experimenting with paper) used a textured pastel paper. Even pressing hard left lots of paper showing through but the blender worked well. Can you recommend paper that works well with coloured pencils?

Hi, always enjoy your videos. I have the Fabriano toned paper, sand colour, and I've struggled to colour on it. Am I doing something wrong? I still see like holes, if I can say that, where the pencil has not coloured and when I rub over with my finger or tissue, the colour wipes off, leaving it looking dull and like I've not coloured much. I've used Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor pencils.

and this is why I don't care of colored pencils... they are too fiddley and take waaayyy too long to produce results. A watercolor painting could be done in 1/3 the time.
@renel7303 Жыл бұрын
It isn't a race to see who gets finished first. You see fiddley, others might see an opportunity to focus and meditate while expanding their observational abilities. Plenty of room for all techniques.
@pesto12601 Жыл бұрын
@@renel7303 Sure.. depends upon what your goals are... my goal is to create something tangible in the 30-60 minutes a week I might have available to me. If you have 3 hours to create a small object with colored pencils and enjoy the layering and blending of 5 shades of the same color... then more power to you! 🙂
@eliciabonnie Жыл бұрын
Why are you even commenting on a video about colored pencils technique? People watching this are actually ready to spend that extra time because they love colored pencils. It's like if I were to go to a watercolor painting video and say how that is not for me because I hate brushes (and it's not, because I couldn't care less about watercolor).
@pesto12601 Жыл бұрын
@@eliciabonnieWell.. if you did do that I would say.. GREAT! you are sharing YOUR OPINION with others.. making conversation and perhaps sparking a lively debate about brushes and watercolor... that is what the COMMENTS section of youtube is for. Thx for reading my comment and starting a conversation about it! 🙂

@@pesto12601 but this is not a debate it's you telling us we should use something else, like none of us ever tried other methods to draw. We're into colored pencils, we don't care if watercolor painting takes less time. That's not the point. We want tricks to improve with pencils, not brushes. For that we'd obviously be watching the wrong video. So if you don't care, don't comment here to patronize colored pencils users about the wrongs of our choices and rights of yours. Newsflash we don't care.
