As ever, it would be great to hear your feedback in the comments below. It's a lengthy lesson but hey, making nice art takes time! I think you could watch this and complete your drawing in a single morning or afternoon. And what better way to spend half your day!

I have watch multiple different teaching artists and found your lesson was very well done especially that you allowed the camera to zoom in for a better look at how you were executing the pencil strokes as you were speaking about what you were drawing. I found it to be unique to your lesson and a great advantage to the student. That is genius on your part because it helps the student focus on the area and brings a better understanding of what you are trying to get across to the student. Thank you for sharing your talent and experience to a budding artist.

Watched & re-watched your detailed work, as a beginner using Pitt pastels was engrossed in your information & explanations. So very grateful to learn from you. Hope I can paint such a beautiful kingfisher, if I can’t it definitely is because I don’t have your gift. So grateful you mention how the pencils can be used for a variety of subjects as I have only found portraits & animal studies as examples. Thanks.

I'm just at 7:30 and I'm already very satisfied! Very useful considerations about medium vs subject/reference, I've struggled a lot with the wrong paper and/or the wrong medium just because I wanted to try and replicate an effect on something quite unnatural for a specific reference/model... if you add my currently limited experience there you get the perfect recipe for some useless frustration LOL Thanks a lot Phil, your video is really appreciated! Greetings from Italy!

Phil you inspire me. I have decided to invest in some pastel pencils. Years ago I bought the sticks and found them too cumbersome. So I have never tried again. I love drawing however didn’t enjoy the stiffness of the prismacolours when blending. I have dabbled in watercolours picked this up when you first set up the art challenges and have stayed with them since. However in more recent times I have been looking to add more detail in my art. So once again thank you. I will let you know how I go. I live in a regional town in Australia so it will take a little while for me to acquire the pastel pencils. But I will try.

Thank you so much for this! It was one of the best projects I’ve done and pastels pencil is now my favorite medium. I would be happy to pay for any future projects you offer. I am not really interested in art lessons but would love to be able to pick one of your lessons and pay for the video, reference photo, and a sketch for tracing would be lovely. I would like to be able to choose from a selection. Not sure if this is something you plan on doing. Thanks again, you are a gifted artist.

Presently being lumbered with a cold (Covid?) I thought I'd give it a go with you. Many years ago I was bought a 60 set of FC pastel pencils and have used them only a few times. Also had the MT paper in a mid grey. My result isn't as good as yours, for obvious reasons, but it does look respectable. I have sprayed it, some don't recommend this, and it will be stuck on my granddaughters bedroom wall, along with the tortoise, so I hope they get along. Thank you.

I loved seeing your whole process. I love pastel pencils because they dont bother me as much as the sticks. ( I am sensitive to the binders in them i think) but there isnt much videos on pastel pencils. I am also not a real great freehand artist so seeing your whole process was insightful
