yea but this mother got lucky and timed the egg hatching to be the first before the others, sometimes the nest is further along and the parasitic chick will have to compete with actual chicks
@styrfry6 ай бұрын
@@lilbroomstick7914 Cuckoos usually do not survive for long if the real hatchlings emerge, because the mother will be able to see that the color of the mouth/beak is different. When this kind of thing happens the cuckoo will eventually become malnourished and you will see the cuckoo become desperate and start to peck at the mother/other nestlings. By this point they are usually too weak and small to cause any real damage. The end result is a baby cuckoo slowly withering away due to a lack of food before it ultimately gets crushed by the weight of the other nestlings. Eventually the remains will start attracting ants and the parent birds will toss it out of the nest like we take out our garbage.

They are such destructive birds that they are known to put other bird species into extinction or being endangered of facing extinction! In some parts of the US wildlife management officials have to destroy cuckoo birds that lay their eggs into the nests of endangered species of birds to keep them from being wiped out by the cuckoos!

I wish a cuckoo would lay an egg near me. I would let it hatch and then toss it on the ground to starve alone while its mother watches. Apparently the mother cuckoo sticks around to make sure the host doesn't reject the egg. It will destroy the entire nest if it comes back and it's egg is gone. The host bird might also abandon the nest if it comes back to fewer eggs so maybe letting it hatch and pretending it fell might save the host bird some trouble.

Baby cuckoon: Hatches and sees eggs Also Baby cuckoon: And I took that personally
@marcelinkoffi75603 ай бұрын
The one left is a cuckoo, it's mum will have laid her egg in another bird's nest. When the birds hatch, the cuckoo instinctively pushes the other baby chick's out of the nest. Sadly, their mum doesn't realise what's happened. She just sees the big chick and thinks it's hers. So she feeds it. The cuckoo becomes much bigger than her and she has to bring food for it all the time, as the cuckoo is constantly growing bigger and bigger, the 'mum' bird gets exhausted. Cuckoos never rear their young. They just leave it for other, unsuspecting parents to do so. It's the only bird to do that. I think it's sad!

@globin34775 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Both species have existed for a long time, and reed warblers outnumber cuckoos by a fair amount... and fairly often, the parents do notice the problem, and dispose of the cuckoo egg.
@br24855 жыл бұрын
Reed Warblers have co-evolved better capacities to detect cuckoo eggs, so if a cuckoo egg isn't a good enough mimic it's likely to be discarded. While the common cuckoo certainly decreases the reproductive sucess of reed warblers, there is enough of a balance and arms race, so to speak, that the populations are steady. If either was too efficient the other would be extinct, which might have happened to other species. Since they're both around after millions of years we can infer there's a good balance. The parasite species have selective pressures to both be good enough and not too good. If they're not good enough they'll be discovered and can't breed, and if they're too good they'll kill all their hosts and also be unable to breed.
