Its impossible for me not to hear Debussy's influence over modern jazz masters like Bill Evans and Miles Davis.Debussy is sublime.
@cojcmic Жыл бұрын
I completely agree but to be fair and exact we also have to say that Debussy's influence over jazz came first from his own influence by rag-time. Debussy was inspired by this emerging musical genre as a precursor to Jazz and then, by the jazzmen most accomplished of his time. This influence is obvious especially at the beggining of this piece. Even a deaf could hear it and this mix between classical music and jazz ends up becoming a pure gem

Many jazz people were admirers of Debussy including Charlie Parker. His influence on 20th century music started with the silent film era, with many pianists playing scores for films imitated him or outright copying his work. Debussy met Charlie Chaplin in Paris circa 1910 when Chaplin was already famous and Debussy complimented him as a great composer, obviously having seen his films. When Gershwin went to Paris he came back with a stack of Debussy sheet music and started incorporating the master's work into his own style.

Listen to E. Robert Schmitz's observation, so accurate in describing "Reflets dans l'eau": "One could say that what Debussy saw in the water was the reflection of his own love of subtle design - a very characteristic French admiration for the amazingly varied opalescence of play of light and water, and the diaphanous deformations of realities viewed through these two fluctuating media."

Funny, i never picture pretty natural things anymore. I delve into appreciation for it's sentimentality value. I know for a fact that not all of the composers were model citizens or followed the good book like a computer, but people in general are just beautiful to me. Can you tell me why it is the people more often think of a dreamy picture than wonder what the composer was thinking every so fondly, deeply, or broodingly in a lovely kind of analytical sense?

definitely agree i don't know why people would down vote that, maybe they can't come to terms with reality. for example ravel (a student of Debussy) was approached by George Gershwin, a great jazz and serious composer, and asked to give him lessons on his methods of composition. Im sure if Debussy were alive then he would have inspired even more in the jazz artists of the day.
