My “shabby chic” or “cottage” furniture pieces are family heirlooms from an actual farmhouse and I can tell you that they look nothing like the fake stuff that is called “farmhouse” now. They’re gorgeous, they’re distressed, and they’re loaded with family history. I wouldn’t trade them for the world. Distressed furniture only limits your style when it’s an artifice. But since mine are a part of our family histories they are a part of us, therefore a natural part of our home & decor. There is no way that could ever be limiting.

Marble contact paper: I have a brand made for counter tops (EZ faux currently, but I used instant granite in the past). We have had it on our counters for 2 years and use it in a rental property andrew the tenants aren’t easy on them. It has held up wonderfully, there are no seams in the middle of the counter because it’s extra wide and it’s a less expensive alternative for an update on the marble trend. We spent 110 dollars total. It’s also heat resistant to 300 degrees.

I agree! Contact paper can actually be a good choice for renters when you've done your homework. You don't always have to go with the most expensive ones to find a good quality one, Amazon reviews (with customer pics or videos!) are usually pretty helpful for determining which ones are actually good. I found a beautiful white granite contact paper that really elevated my kitchen. The brown laminate granite countertops clashed with the color my landlord chose to have the cabinet painted and I couldn't stand it. Mine's glossy, but some come in matte finishes. I have a white leather chaise lounge which is in a corner and extends into the room. Behind it, I have a arc lamp which illuminates whatever I am reading while lounging. It works great because chaise lounges sit lower to the ground than most seating so a side table and reading lamp does not work. The width of the lounge also puts the side table lamp too far away. I agree with you on everything, except macrame. Even though I don't have any at the moment, I am attracted to the beautiful wall hangings. The really well done ones are elegant. I grew up in the era where macrame was very trendy and I learned how to do it and even made a hanging shelf with wooden shelves. I wish I had that now, to be honest. But, I am over the plant hangers.

We can agree to disagree on some of these opinions. To me, design is also about what makes you comfortable and gives a feeling of satisfaction in your space. There is no one design fits all rule. I’ve seen some gorgeous spaces that were designed to the Gawds but didn’t look enough like a home to me. It was too designed, too stark, to upscale. It almost looked like you needed an evening gown or a tuxedo to sit in the living room.

The hanging chair... 1) Visual interest -Follow the line up to the ceiling. (And lighten the impact made on the lower than knee area, particularly as you move into a space. Heavy couches squatting on the ground, for example, might need a counterpoint.) 2) The calming effect of covering the back 180° (and a bit more). For those with sensory issues, autism, or even a significant skew towards introversion, a lack of 'nookiness,' especially where one might choose to socialize, is a serious issue. If your senses are ranging outward, particularly, going forth with more intensity, trying to connect with someone, the sense that projected effort doesn't have to cover anything behind you, or in your peripherals, is a great relief. Think of it like a person always having to whip their head about to take in two different simultaneous conversations on the instinctive level. 3) I would rather use floor furniture, or be in the air, or lounge on a divan any day. It can be utterly oppressive sitting on a thousand different versions of 'chair' day in and day out. Not only is the posture it promotes, awful for quite a few of us, but the lack of changing perspective, and the sameness of the vision are enough to bore a person to tears. I would rather have a hammock than a hanging chair, myself, but I can see where the impulse comes from. 4) There is no lifting that chair to vacume or mop under it, not once a week, once a month, or 'ye gads!' every decade. 5) Have you ever wanted to sit inside a soap bubble, suspended in a moment? Did you watch 'The Fountain,' and think you wanted to be in that bubble on the edge of that golden star, traveling by an entirely different notion of up or down, to or from?

@desertdweller86833 жыл бұрын
I was surprised by the arc floor lamp, they have them at RH, pottery barn, and CB2.....I personally like them....not the ones stretching from one end to the other of the room...but the simple, small, single light ones. I did not like the "bless you" painted mason jars, but I think if one wants to use them as drinking glasses, storage, or maybe even some type of simple decor, it can be fine...it really depends on the person's style and execution of it. I don't think it would fit in with Arvin's deco!. I personally wasn't a fan of the can shaped drinking glass....I enjoy your vids, and personality....not offended like Billy Jean though!

I have the mason jars with the handles and while I don’t love the aesthetic anymore, they regular mouth fits perfect with my blender so I’m always making frozen coffee or little smoothies in them without having to bring out and clean the large blender cup. I also love that with the lids (that allow for reusable straws) if you happen to accidentally knock it off on your desk it’s so much less likely you’ll spill your drink over your computer. My hope is that I can find some classier ones that do all the things these do, because in the summer they are just so practical for me…

The problem is not the trends is how the are whorized to the point all originality dies with them. I instinctively love certain boho jewelry for example but now it makes me cringe for all the world market / forever 21 / Coachella crap that delegitimized the style and it’s meaning. Same with the overly luxurious stuff and so on. I think is because trends in the US mean nothing more than whatever you can commercialize :( don’t feel bad about it macrame was cool! Old real French design from the 00’s with all the really old furniture WAS cool. Some maximalism and mirrored furniture was cool. The problem is that all the copies are cheap, badly made and meant to be replace with the next trend.
