Jeroen Van Veen has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics of music by the masters of Minimalism, that 1960s-derived aesthetic in which it is not so much the case that more can be said with less as that less seems to be necessary in an increasingly noisy and chaotic world. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has never counted himself as among the minimalist number, nor indeed was he schooled in their new traditions, but emerged in the 1960s as an angry and dissonant voice whose musically expressed anger against Communist oppression of his native country could barely be contained within the tumultuous textures of works such as the Third Symphony, but a combination of personal circumstances and aesthetic decisions led him to pare back his style to the world of eerie calm and yet underlying melancholy that has made works such as the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten such an enduring favourite even among audiences who would not otherwise count themselves as aficionados of the European contemporary music scene. But then Pärt has never fitted into any one stylistic box, and alongside the quiet rapture of Für Alina we may find the student-era tinkling of the intriguing early Dance Pieces, as well as arrangements of classics such as Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel - here interpreted by Dutch cellist Douw Fonda - that seem to preserve their special mood no matter what the instrumental forces; a quality they share with works of Pärt's compositional idol, J.S. Bach.

First time i heard Speigle im Speigle is in the film Elegy, then i heard the same in the film Mother Night. I listen to that song for hours on end. Someone commented that a new born baby was in serious life threatening health. The family insisted to play the song continuously in the hospital. The baby lived and grown up now and is a dancer ( i think) amazing story. I never forgot that story. Arvo Part is so remarkable with being a minimalist composer. Many "artists" ive enjoyed but are sadly gone now. It would be amazing to see him perform. He is still alive at 88 years old in 2023. He has 2 upcoming concerts in February 2024 in Germany for all those interested

Makes you appreciate every note and you wait for it. Then it resonates in your soul. When I first heard him, I thought its like a lullaby, but im also finding that much is like childhood-like. In the sense that it is resembemblance of nursery rhyme music. Emotional, simplistic, pure, pleasing to hear, thought provoking, just simply lovely. I'd love to see a child reaction listening to Part.

At the piano, Jerome Van Veen is the master of minimalism, and I just love his piano tone full on! Arvo Pärt clearly were a fellow Christian of mine and his music so beautiful and meditative. There is nothing wrong with meditation as a Christian, but Christian meditation is the OPPOSITE of New Age meditation. Transcendental New Age meditation is emptying your mind and opening yourself for influence of untested spirits, that is literally the purpose and not hidden for anyone to know. I were in the New Age, before I got saved. Meditation in the Bible is contemplation on the meaning of God's word in truth and spirit! It is discernment of the scriptures and trying to live by them! The apostasy in this western world, supposedly Christian, has never been worse than now, where even pastors disregard the truth and spirit of the Bible, but that is also a sign of the end! We are going home soon, all fellow Christians, and your only concern should be to spread the gospel for all your dear ones and all you meet on the way and of course also be saved yourself. The gospel for our dispensation in the Bible is referenced by my name. God Bless! 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. 1Thessalonians 4 KJV

Quite a crystal glass world on which Pärt circumvents and encapsels us, note by note, compass by compass, softhly but determined, shadowing feelings and listening sensations, reminds me the early b&w movies of Meisters Bergman and Antonioni, Some would say Pärt weaves a great, great web witn no need of any spider. Remarkable set, indeed. But to be digested very slowly. When sometimes a day is not enough.... Thank you.

I often play this album at home; Part has such an understanding of how sound and silence work together. The notes here are cradled by, birthed by the silence, and I think it's this profound insight that draws people to Part. This is where his spirituality is found. As it says in the Bible: In silence and in hope shall your strength be.

There is a lot of Shostakovich is this.. I am very happily surprised because it is not an angular absorption of influence ..well I do love Shostakovich but he is often way to right angularly linear for me pounding away anticipating the march of redemption ..and well he would be so desperately soulful as Arvo...there is san admittance to Arvo that is not quite as bare as Dmitri. I think Arvo did the right thing for history and saw through banal criticism such as mine and took a bullet for the creative mind and importance of meaning over matter for Shostakovich. It is the flaw that makes bot truly great, it is their stampede needed to complete the articulation of a solution that makes them equally timeless.

You should listen to his choral works! They are wonderful. And Silouan's song.

@@TheWorldTeacher Well, that is comical. He were a Christian and his music were clearly inspired by Christian worship music, and you essentially serve the devil. Maybe you don't realize that? Well, ALL founders of the modern New Age movement saw Lucifer as the one true god. In the Bible it is clear, that Lucifer were the name of Satan, personified evil essentially, when he were still the covering archangel of God!
