In the Philokalia it speaks of three kinds of prayer. The highest prayer is to sit in deep silence, open to the experience of God. The book, Cloud of Unknowing, and The Book of Privy Counseling are true guides in that direction. May your prayer life deepen until the Experience of God is with you in all hours.

I can't possibly express how much I love this. I had never heard of this composer until I saw him mentioned in a new novel by one of my favorite contemporary authors--- EVERY OCEAN HAS A SHORE by Jamie Langston Turner--- who created a quirky character who is a minimalist and says she enjoys music by Arvo Pärt. She is sometimes overheard humming unusual music with only a few long-held-out notes that seem to repeat and go up and down... at least, that was the impression it made on her unimaginative boss when he heard it. I was intrigued by the idea of "minimalist music" and wondered if this Arvo Pärt could be a real composer, decided to look him up on KZbin, and clicked PLAY expecting to hear something weird and tuneless. You can imagine the shock of delight when instead I was greeted by the ethereal beauty of Spiegel im Spiegel. I am captivated. This will now play as the perfect soundtrack for the rest of my reading of this wonderful book. BTW I highly recommend any and all of Jamie Langston Turner's novels.

Arvo Pärt follows the line of development initiated during the Middle Ages and without abandoning it grows into contemporary music. This capacity of synthesis preserving beauty perhaps belongs to our confused times. Pärt transcends time, is at the same time baroque, minimalist, medieval, contemporary, classic. I believe he will be, in the future, a Master. Thanks again Brilliant Classics for producing and uploading this marvelous music.

You get this feeling with some of Part's compositions which you also get with some of those by John Taverner. That they have been around for ever and they are inextinguishable. It is a classic case of someone making exceptionally beautiful and spiritually profound music having done a lot of study and research and learning about past composers. Having learnt so much about medieval choral and devotional music he was able to move the tradition forward in a way that is devastatingly good and right.

"The sound was up and down, sometimes disappeared and other times came with the wind of the air. I stood in front of the shelter, the day started faking, a few tiny human’s figures moving against the dimmed sky over the riverbend. Occasionally a weak sound of knocking came a few seconds after their body movement, as they were knocking wood piles of bridge into the river. Everything looks like a cartoon and not real - except that piece of music that is continuously playing inside some part of my body, strong and clear sometimes, weak and fakeaway other times. At that moment, everything around me was frozen, stopped; I was full of tears; I suddenly felt as if I was alive. I didn’t remember how long I stood there, until a group of young inmates and villagers waved arms to me as they walked back from their work. I did not tell anyone my experience and I couldn’t find what, and how a piece of music struck me in that remote isolated village. ..... " quote from " a story of a musician" by Jerry Nie, rmt
