Arvo Pärt ; born 1935 is an Estonian composer of classical and religious music. Since the late 1970s, Pärt has worked in a minimalist style that employs his self-invented compositional technique, tintinnabuli. Pärt's music is in part inspired by Gregorian chant. His most performed works include Fratres (1977), Spiegel im Spiegel (1978), and Für Alina (1976). Since 2010 Pärt has been the most performed living composer in the world … (WIKI)

Arvo part seems to have attempted to bring beauty and elegance back into the musical word post-war. A powerful answer to the horror and anguish of Webern and the soundscaping of Morton Feldman and the like. No musical world is complete without Part's kind of beauty, no matter how unfashionable it is among the critics and composers of the time. Bach knew that well enough when he was branded old fashioned and overly florid for composing in his breathtaking counterpoint.

I actually like what I've heard of Webern so far. What I meant was that his music expresses unbelievable levels of anguish and it is therefor necessarily difficult to listen to.

1 My soul doth magnify the Lord. 2 and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 3 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 4 Because he that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is his name. 5 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. 6 He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. 7 He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble. 8 He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. 9 He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy. 10 As he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever. (Most musical settings of the Magnificat will append the minor doxology, Gloria Patri.)

There's a curious difference between what the performers sing and the displayed score at Deposuit potentes de sede. On the last note of the phrase, the tenor sings a D flat rather than the C written, creating a major 7th with the soprano rather than the written bare octave. That's at about 4m00s.

Thankfully there is a modern composer who seems immune to the call of serialism and tone rows.

He started out serial.
@cobblestonegenerator4 жыл бұрын
His Tintinnabuli style of composing is almost as rigged as Schoenbergs 12 tone techniques. Part pretty much gives himself the tonic chord and a melody and shifts the harmony voices to different notes of the tonic. While its absolutely one of the prettiest things ever, it is extremely limiting. Im not saying its bad, but its pretty much serialism...just one the 1 chord. Also, there are many "serialist" pieces that are incredible. So, if you link serialism with bad, im very sorry.
@lucaslemonholm64103 жыл бұрын
It has been many years since I heard even 1 piece of serialism that's new. I genuinely consider it a historical style at this point. If you aren't a fan, then you're in luck! Go check out some cool new music! I would be happy to point you to some if you want any recommendations :)

Our Lady first recited the Magnificat to St. Elizabeth, mother of St. John the baptist, then in her 6th month. "How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me"? Our Lady then pronounces for the first time the Magnificat. "My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my savior. For the Lord hath regarded the humility of his handmaid. Is this doable by small choir in Zoom or will the delay factor ruin it?
@shannoncrane41314 жыл бұрын
In my personal opinion, it would be extremely difficult to perform this piece over Zoom. There are so many delicate little dissonances that would get muddied. I'd be more inclined to do a Morten Lauridsen piece - you'd get a similar vibe with lots of juicy chords, but it doesn't have to be quite as austere as Pärt.

why so many people love this Arvo Pärt i cannot fathom - i call it the school of modern choral mystical mumbo jumbo music where modern composers simply scatter a bunch of major seconds here and there to sound 'ethereal' - and of course keep it medieval church-y sounding because heaven knows we apparently don't have enough religious-sounding chant music to give endless glory to organized religion
@RaysonWilliams3 жыл бұрын
I mean you summed it up. It IS because of its simplicity and sacred sounding nature, that’s the allure. In a world with endless complexities, a bleak outlook on life and an absent god, it is nice to push everything to the side and partake in “secular mysticism”. At least that’s why I like Arvo Part
@catherinemccorquodale96192 жыл бұрын
in my opinion its less about the text and more about the emotions felt while listening to a composition. i think its more beneficial to the listener to think less about how simple the chords are, or how common it is to see psalms or religious texts in choral music today, and try look deeper into what the composer might be trying to tell us. looking past the text, how do these chords make us feel? what message is Part trying to get across with this song? why does he leave the soprano soloist on the C? why does he choose to cross voice Soprano 1s and 2s? Only in the middle to bring 1s up to an A flat? listening to and enjoying a composer like Part is not just hearing the music but also trying to understand it.
