What's this? A ranger caught off his guard?
Frodo. Im Arwen. Telin le thaed.
Lasto beth nan. Tolo dan na ngalad
Who is she?
She's an Elf.
He's fading!
He's not going to last. We must get him to my father. I've been looking for you for two days.
Where are you taking him?
There are five wraiths behind you. Where the other four are, I do not know.
Dartho guin perian. Rych le ad tolthathon.
Hon mabathon. Rochon ellint im.
Andelu i ven.
What are they saying?
Frodo fir. Ae athradon i hir, tur gwaith nin beriatha hon.
I do not fear them.
Be iest lan.
Arwen, ride hard. Don't look back!
Noro lim, Asfaloth, noro lim!
What are you doing?! Those wraiths are still out there!
Give up the halfling, she-Elf!
If you want him, come and claim him!
Nin o Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer

Nope, only the Calaquendi are supposed to do this, which is why Glorfindel does it in the book. Arwen is one of the Moriquendi. This is lore-breaking.
@alomejorqueno
@alomejorqueno Жыл бұрын
As others have said, it’s wrong. It was supposed to be Glorfindel, and only Frodo saw it because the morgul-blade was pulling him into the unseen world. Calequendi who have seen the light of the trees see both the seen and unseen worlds at once, and Glorfindel has tremendous spiritual power from his self-sacrifice fighting and destroying a balrog in the fall of Gondolin. Tolkien’s elves don’t glow and aren’t ninjas. They have other, more subtle, strengths. Still are good movies, compared to the Rings of Power “just a little time compression” disaster.

One thing to note also is how she appears to frodo compared to everyone else, to frodo she appears shining and wearing a pearl white gown, meanwhile to everyone else she's wearing pretty standard clothes for long distance horse riding.

I think I need to reread it ... every book including Silmarillion, I’m 26 years old now so I bet it wouldn’t be as boring now 😊 I love all the books though but I agree - Arwen was perfect in the movies!

This will forever be my main criticism of the hobbit. Far to reliant on CGI vs live action. I remember reading they used a huge number of extras for the battle scenes in LOTR to show the first few ranks then CGI'd the rest of the armies but nobody is looking 10 ranks back. The battle of Helms Deep is the best example

No one rode Frodo to safetly, lmao. Frodo rides against the Ringwraiths *alone.* It's all about his resilience and courage, not Glorfindel's or Arwen's. The reason why this scene doesn't work is because it strips all of Frodo's moments and gives them to Arwen. It's a nonsensical change. Frodo has 0 agency in the movies, and this is a HUGE reason why.

@Oliver Emmett Knox You mean Tauriel? Yeah...weird. Also Jackson made the decision to keep (somewhat) with the quality of the Hobbit book. He wanted to make it distinctly different from the LOTR movies just as Tolkien made the books different. A mistake I think. He should have made it more like LOTR and not been so heavy handed with the adaptation.

I believe Arwen is one of the strongest characters in Lord of the Rings. She gives up her immortally to be with a mortal man. She had the chance to sail to the West and be with her people forever but she chose the fate of men. I think it is one of the most beautiful love stories out there.

@Elestirnë Makes sense to me, Galadriel probably spooked the shit outta Frodo when he offered her the ring and she went nuts for a moment, plus Arwen gave Frodo that jewel thing after the war to ease his pain.... I also think it was kind of implied that Frodo's seat into the Undying Lands, at least the one on that boat full of studs, was Arwen's. From Sam's perspective Galadriel was just cool, and hooked him up with the magic Shire fixing dust too.

3:59 "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that there's something more important than fear". Aruwen stared down 8 ringwraiths, if they had successfully crossed that river, that was it. For her, for Frodo, for all of middle earth. I'm sure she was afraid in her mind. But Frodos life, and the fate of middle earth itself, were on her shoulders. Fear be damned. Liv Tyler did this performance absolutely beautifully.

Notice how when she rides up to Frodo and greets him she's wearing a long flowing dress and her hair is down. But when the camera cuts back to the perspective of the others she actually looks like she's been on the trail for a few days (in a coat, and her hair has a few braids and is a bit dishevelled). Frodo was falling far enough into the darkness by that point that just seeing someone with the life of the Eldar in them was like seeing an angel. And Arwen never saw the Two Trees of Valinor (she was born millennia after their death). Imagine if Frodo was greeted by her grandmother Galadriel, who had not only looked upon the trees but whose hair was said to have captured their light.

I dont think people should compare Tauriel and Arwen in looks because they do look different, but in regards to the goregous "White light" which is shown in the FOTR and the DoS when Arwen speaks to Frodo and Tauriel heals Kili, then yes, I think we can make some interesting comparisons, although I think Arwen does it better because when she walks up with her long dark hair and her beautiful white gown, it gives off a more powerful yet graceful effect and I think Liv Tyler did a wonderful job of showing that within this scene.

SO TRUE. And, really Arwen should outshine Tauriel in every respect. There is only one elf who could compete with Arwen's beauty in the books and that's Galadriel. No other elf-lady will compare. When it comes to power, Arwen comes from a long line of elven nobles on both her father and her mother's side (her ancestor was a demi-god on Elrond's side, her mother - Galadriel's daughter - is a royal daughter of a house established in the First age). Tauriel is a Silvan elf - beautiful like all elves, but considerably less powerful and significant.

I would have to choose Galadriel. She is like as pure of an elf as you can get, and she has direct relations to all of the most important elves in history, mainly Finwe, Elwe (Thingol), Olwe, and Ingwe (the first four high kings, who are her grandparents and uncles). She is a perfect mixture of Noldor, Teleri, and Vanyar, and she was born in Aman in the time of the trees before the first age even began. Arwen is extremely beautiful however, and a very close second to Galdriel, plus she is distantly related to Luthien, the most beautiful woman to ever live (funnily enough Aragorn is also related to Luthien, making him a distant cousin to Arwen).

When I first saw the movies I was confused as to why they replaced Glorfindel with Arwen for this role but at the time it didn't really upset me very much and after rereading the books many more times since, I think this was one of those few changes in which a movie improves upon the books it's based on. In order to more fully understand Aragorn, we need to know his motivations. Amd meeting Arwen here, the audience falls in love with her, and from there it helps us understand Aragorn's later actions.

Yeah she's in the books.. She's there alongside her father Elrond at Rivendell and she serves as Aragorn's motivation and conviction to take the throne as Elrond won't give Aragorn his blessing otherwise but she's very 1D in the books cause Tolkien didn't conceive the character until late in the writing. 'The tale of Aragorn and Arwen' is in the 'return of the king' appendices(tales that flesh out characters further)

yes, it makes much more sense to use this scene to introduce an important, reoccurring character than a very cool, but utterly random character who doesn't really appear at all afterwards. It works in the book because books are always full of random things like that to make the story seem to come to life, but in a film every second is extremely valuable, and must be used very wisely.
