I'm from Canada I spent the same amount of time inside I'm afew years older then Jesse. I'm native . first nation whatever they are calling us today. This man tells it like it's is . Heart that what he has . I have the utmost respect for him. He first man to vocalized some of what I experienced after I was released. Or the little things you see that other people don't. He did what he had to do. I don't see colour I see a warrior.

I'm in Alabama so I'm next door to Georgia and I can tell you that in the deep south whites are absolutely preyed upon be it inside or on the streets everyday. A white dude has to be tough and has to go extra hard to earn respect in order to be left alone. I think people have the opposite view of the south. It definitely isn't whites ganging up on blacks. For the record I've grown up in black neighborhoods in a black city. Even went to an all black college for awhile. I'm in no way a racist. However situations arise where race matters to the attackers so therefore race has to matter to you if you want to get through certain situations. White boys are forced to stick together not out of some racist narrative but out of necessity. Like homeboy said, you have to make them respect you if maintaining your dignity matters to you.

This is one of the best interviews you’ve done. I’m a Florida department of corrections nurse I’ve done this 17 years now. At the end of the day it is all about respect this is why I do not have a slick disrespectful attitude with these inmates, I’m firm, fair, and consistent. Am I scared absolutely not to work in a level 6 maximum security prison, where I work is what is also referred to as a CM institution (Closed management). We are outnumbered by inmates by a hundred inmates to one staff member again it’s all about respect the way I look at this if there’s a riot would the inmates let a nurse out of the gate first who’s been respectful and decent or one is arrogant. It’s all about respect that’s all it is.

I did 20 years in Georgia d.o.c, I felt almost guilty walking out the gate, like I was leaving friends behind in hell while I'm going out to be free. I was very scared to go out in public places. I didn't realize how institutionalized until I got close to getting out. So hard to explain...and it's slowly fading away but it's still there...and here I am 49 years old just now learning that love is the strongest force in the universe people, positive vibes to all from southwest GA 🤘 💪

When I started my time I would be the only white dude on a block, If you didn't stand up your time was real hard or spent in protective custody. After serving about 10 years, I went back to outside court and the roles were reversed. I asked a white dude what happened and he told me the opiate and meth epidemic. If you were white and served time during the crack epidemic and came out still a man, You're a soldier. salute.

When he mentioned his dad's last words, "Son whatever happens, just be a man." That hit me. I was facing 25 years to the door and my dad came to see me in the very beginning and I asked him HOW am I gonna do this?? I'll never ever forget his words. "Son. You're gonna have to be a man. You're gonna have to find strength that you never even knew you had."

I love the attitudes old school dads have. They are so real and masculine without trying. It’s just how they had to be. My dad is the toughest man I know. Just get it done son ❤

I find it interesting that Jesse is talking about that situational awareness, and bullshit filter that only living through tense situations brings. I’ve tried to explain that to many people and they just don’t understand it. That truly is the definition of wisdom. Intellect comes from study, but will never make you wise. Wisdom is only gained through experience, and the depth of that wisdom is determined by just how difficult your life experiences have been. The combination of that wisdom paired with intellect is the apex of wisdom. An ex-convict who truly dedicates him/herself to study is the wisest of individuals. If that person is lucky enough to be given a chance by an employer or to become self employed, that individual will succeed to great heights. Give an ex-con who has proven himself ready to calm down a chance. You won’t regret it.

Sometimes you can't tell another's character or loyalty out on the streets. Inside when your put in a situation you intend to discover who those around you truly are about. Out here it's to each his own, and cut throat in order to get there, not so much inside. Everybody ( a majority anyway ) out here are doing them and watching out for only them and theirs. On the inside you only have those who are for you and themselves, and intend to stick together like brothers. One thing we can't forget ,that prison politics change from coast to coast, border to border. Great interview. You can see this cat is old school and was in when prison was all about respect and that in itself varied in all races.. Thanks man

I appreciate this one, Its good to hear someone that's been through it all and comes out positive. I understand when he said doing 15 is like doing 30, just a few more calendars. Some people might brand this ole head a racist because his affiliations but never knock him until you've been through what he's been through and survived what might make you fold. Hope you are still well Jesse James.
