I started riding dirt bikes (motocross) at 4 years old and my mom use to freak out so much every time I got hurt that she had to stop attending events all together just to keep her sanity. By the time I got to high school and started playing Football, she'd seen me injured so many times in just about every manner possible that nothing phased her anymore. While attending a game where I got a cleat caught under my helmet that ripped my nose half off my face and mom was at the fence smiling as the med staff was temporarily patching me up and her response was "Good Tackle! as my bloodied face looked like it had just be freshly hacked up by Freddy Kruger. I was so proud of how much she'd grown! lol

Tough, resilient kids become tough, resilient adults. Life is hard, it is unfair ; it is NOT social media. Coddling kids by helicopter parents creates entitled, risk-averse adults. I rode calves and drove the tractor ( with some help 😊) when I was 9, and was on a horse by 10.

I didn't grow up on a farm, but my parents paid for us to ride horses at a stable down the lane when we moved to England when I was nine... I'm just happy to see that some kids are still being taught to be tough, respectful and willing to take a few bumps. My youth was spent on the back of my horse and I live in San Diego. There was pride in having skinned up knees and elbows. If you had a cast on your arm or leg even better cause all your friends would sign it. We were taught to get up, brush it off and keep going. Not saying there wasn't tears but unless the injury wasn't that bad the old saying to get back on and keep going was always the rule. No coddling was allowed.

Cowboy and cowgirls in training is not an easy sport or safe sport. It is definitely not for everyone. A friend of mine has a son who was a cowboy in training. He didn't ride bulls or sheep but he rode horses, fed them, mucked stalls... He grew up with horses and he was taught to care and respect them. He was in the round pen with a sweet and he took her for a ride. He'd done this for years and knew what he was doing. The horse bucked him...hard. He flew up and fell under her, her hoof landing on his head. He was in a coma for a week. My friend never left his side. He has grown up to be a great man. His brothers are still looking after horses, but he woke up with a new hobby. He began Irish dancing. Gotta give the kid credit for reaching for the stars!

My daughter had a "boyfriend" when she was in Pre-K (about 4 - 5 years old; 30+ years ago). His name was "Oak" and he rode sheep in the rodeo. I don't know what happened to him after Pre-K, but he was one tough little boy. You commented about the pressure being put on the kids to perform. I found that to be fairly common in all sports. Once you demonstrate a talent and ability in a given sport and begin to rise in the rankings, coaches and parents frequently "encouraged" youth to perform better. My parents never put pressure on me as they had 8 kids and their focus was always on education. I guess the only "pressure" they put on my athletic career was to restrict travel until I could beat everyone in my region (5 states). My coach was also pretty good about the pressure as he supported my competitive drive, but never really put pressure on me other than to reinforce that results equaled the amount of effort I put into practice / training. Other coaches would really push kids (my peers) and tear them down if they had a bad race, I didn't encounter that until I went to university. I don't know that it is really different around the world or in the various sports. I personally put so much pressure on myself to be the best in the world that it didn't really matter if other people put pressure on my, none of them held a candle to the competitive drive I had myself. (I think that is very common among athletes.)

These kids raised as Cowboys or now, Cowgirls were or are part of their families' generations such as living in Old West of 1800's. Some of these kids do become authentic Cowboys or Cowgirls on their families' farms or ranches. I knew a few here in Florida who raises Cattle. Only difference is horses, or other animals are transported by trailers be hauled to a location. But lately, their properties are taking over by rich and greedy developers.

My youngest brought the boyfriend home for dinner. I was cooking and she said can we have a salad- I said ok- but you will have to go get it. the BF grabbed the keys. She grabbed a basket and small spade. She asked him what he was doing- he said your mom said we need to go get the salad stuff. She said.... yeah. About that- grabbed him and headed out to the backyard. He later said first time he has "shopped" in a backyard for salad. When the goats went to kid- it was Feb and high of minus 20. We headed out to the barn. as the kids arrived my children opened up their coats to put the just borns inside to keep them warm until the mom was ready. Taught them a lot.

Good job, Millie! Hee, when Archie gets just a wee bit older you shoukd watch and review kid movies. We could use that. You can see how Archie reacts, how attentive, whether he sings the songs or plays the characters. Parents and grands would love it.

I grew up in this kind of culture; I was riding bucking horses when I was 14... but as a job, not for sport. Millie, what you have to undertand is that all the rodeo event competitions grew out of the things we do here, every day, as part of life. Learning to do these things is preparation for living and working. It's not just our culture, it's our livelihood and day-to-day experience. Seeing a 13-year-old, 90-pound girl take down and bulldog a 900-pound steer shows the kind of people this land produces. It's not a sport; it's a way of life.

Yeah, it's a hard call. You have to remember that these kids were riding horses since they were big enough to hold onto a saddle horn. Still, I would understand it if they weren't allowed to ride steers or bulls till they reached 18 - just to make sure it was 100% their choice.

I am 47 years old and in that time only seen one death. PBR, bull rider at the San Antonio rodeo. That was a bad bull. Been on a bull a couple times myself. One of the crazier things I have done but not the craziest. Honestly the the bull fights in Mexico when I was a kid where far more dangerous. Seen many Matadors gourde by the horns. Some lived others died at the hospital.

My bothers rode horses. I quit when I was 12 because I didn't want a bunch of broken bones. My grandchildren tried when they were younger 4-6. Just now for everyone.

As a kid I was known as being accident prone. Broke my arm in church, broke my ribs falling out of the attic. Lost my front teeth ice skating, split my wrist while playing basketball. Hit in the head with a shovel, and a heavy wood door, stitches both times. Almost drowned twice. Wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm 65 and still alive. As I got older this has not changed. Oh I forgot, bit by a rat c hased by a bull .

To each their own. But I personally drew the line at dirt bikes and football. Had both my son and daughter on tiny dirt bikes by 4 and taken them squirrel hunting teaching them pewpew safety by 8. Also Started taking them target shooting at 8. I know some would say bull riding and dirt bikes are kinda splitting hairs as far as safety. But there’s risk in anything.

My father-in-law was a pro bull rider years ago. He survived getting “freight-trained”, (colliding heads together), then getting tossed through a fence post. He woke up a week later. His best friend was not so lucky. Got bucked off, the bull spun around and rammed him head-on. No helmets. No protective gear. Just a cowboy hat and unfathomable courage.

Look how tired the adult wranglers are after running after the muttons and making sure kids are safe. If i had fallen out of a tree in the woods my friends would have had to go for help. I also had access to powerful fireworks. We also built tennis ball cannons and used model airplane fuel to launch. We could do worse by sitting in front of a TV or some other screen, much worse.
