To me, there’s a difference between ripping off and being inspired by something. Eragon feels more like it’s inspired by these other stories, rather than plagiarism.

@@eleonorepb4565 Yeah, a SUMMARY, not the actual stories. Eragon is a pretty straight forward riff on Star Wars, not that THAT is a problem in and of itself, but it finds it’s own voice as the series goes on.

@@eleonorepb4565 So, just to be clear, you’re original claim was that it was just a rip off of Star Wars, and now that I’ve countered that you’ve discarded that claim. Just pointing that out. Again, you’re comparing SUMMARIES of stories, not the actual substance. Yes, it pulls concepts from other books, but it’s kind of impossible NOT to do that. Star Wars is a mish mash of a variety of different stories and cliches, including but not limited to westerns, samurai flicks, and fantasy. It’s hardly original. Calling Eragon “soulless” is really strange to me, because even if I conceded that it’s completely unoriginal, Paolini CLEARLY has a passion for his story, and it’s characters. It has so much soul and heart.

@@eleonorepb4565 “Eragon is exactly like Luke, except for the parts where he isn’t, but those don’t count for arbitrary reasons.” - You. Also, Murtagh is NOT Anakin Skywalker. They have somewhat similar roles in their stories, but they are quite distinct characters.

@@eleonorepb4565 So you deleted your other comments just to keep coming back? Kinda strange. Those are not small details at all, but okay, I’ll give you more: He also didn’t choose to become a dragon rider, where as Luke chose to become a Jedi. Eragon was reluctant to be a hero, where Luke was eager to fight the empire. Eragon was the one who beat Galbatorix, While Luke’s father was the one who killed Palpatine. Eragon has a strong aversion to killing, where Luke seems at least indifferent to it. Luke never left the Galaxy and all his friends to go train new Jedi, where Eragon did with the Dragon riders. Even if you want to argue that Luke did leave everyone during the events leading up to the force awakens, the inheritance cycle was completed before Disney even bough the rights to Star Wars, so Paolini didn’t get the idea from them. Luke and Eragon aren’t the same character. Stop comparing footnotes of stories and actually compare the stories themselves.

Eragon felt like a love letter to fantasy, and a very good intro to fantasy, altogether, for beginners/young people. That being said, Eldest and Brisingr are great reads.

Eragon was one of the first books I chose read from my cousin's vast library from my childhhood. I liked that it was character driven. The story is advanced through how people experience the events of the story, hitting a few philosophical notes that some of the other novels couldn't. This is more evident in books 2-4. There is also a unique way of aligning the laws of magic to that of nature that was felt more on re-reading. Things like how magic is linked to conservation of energy and when Eragon discovers that the earth is round in book 4. That might be why Inheritance felt more like the author's take on the popular theme rather than unoriginal storytelling Which balances a lot of the flaws held against it. The actual crime was how poorly they adapted the movie

Loved Eragon. It's probably why I was enthralled by both Way of Kings and Name of the Wind because there were similarities across the magic systems for all of them.

I loved the cultural depth in the story. For the series as a whole, especially. Though, I haven’t read them in a while

I'm currently halfway through 4th book & absolutely love it. I feel like people drop the series after 1st or 2nd book because it slow & derivative, which is a shame because 3rd & 4th where the pace shift and the world expand.

Eragon, particularly the first book, feels a lot less interesting to me as an adult than me as a kid, but i still love it, partially for nostalgia value, and partially because dragons will always be fun to read. The last couple of books especially are still pretty good for me.

all stories are just stolen from other stories. Some people are just better at hiding it.

Eragon is overhated imho. I think it has issues, namely the very slow plot, and the overuse of fantasy tropes. It doesn’t deserve the amount of criticism it gets, though.
