Personally I love my Crate GX as a preamp. It's basically Tomb of the Mutilated in a box. Just like how the Grunge pedal benefited from when you plugged into the power amp and the bigger cab, the GX will benefit from decent speakers.

I love this demo but I want to throw a suggestion out there: I know most people went for this pedal for a grunge/Alt rock/metal sound, but I have the also much maligned death metal and I use it for shoegaze. Honestly, try using a jaguar or Jazzmaster + reverse reverb into either of these pedals and it’s a great mbv sound! Especially since so much of the distortion they use is so over the top. I mean Blinda used an HM-2 for her guitar parts!

Back in the day, my friend had the Grunge pedal, but I'd bought the DOD MetalX instead. Truthfully, they're not that different with just insane amounts of gain. I've kept that MetalX pedal for all these years and have tried different ways to get it to sound cool - also using it as a preamp into the effects loop return and it sounds cool, but no better than my amp's own preamp. Then I decided to try out my first rig, knowing what I know now, and sourced a Crate GX30 - the big brother to that 15 watt amp. I have to say that it all sounds pretty damn good when a little restraint is exercised. I'm really glad my first amp had a 12" speaker, though.

A huge amount of us must have had the same childhood. I remember seeing a used grunge pedal in our local guitar shop, around 2004, and thinking “wow, that’s the only pedal I’ll ever need”. Somebody in my extended friend group had one and it sounded great to my young ears. Eventually I got one. No idea what happened to it which probably speaks to my evolving tastes I guess. It’s probably in a ditch somewhere in Baltimore or the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

i have a line 6 vetta, and use that DOD grunge. it took me a couple months to make the setting on my vetta, but i get compliments all the time. its like a tube amp crunch that keeps clarity and scoop for more metalcore sounding stuff. i love playing smashing jazz chords on it and noodling as well as just more metalcore sounding stuff.

I feel like tuned down you might get a tone somewhat like Six Feet Under with that Grunge. It's really surprising just how much gain it has. I feel like this pedal would sound great through a cranked fender tube amp. Or, maybe there’s a reason Kurt never turned the thing on
@frederickshelborn69113 жыл бұрын
Kurt tried very hard to be unique and different. He liked Marshal amps, but wouldn't use them (unless it was the only gear) because it was the sound of hair rock. He played a Mustang because it was different, but even said he likes Les Paul's, but it wasn't different. This focus on doing everything different is how a new movement started. I wouldn't be surprised if his dislike of this pedal was partly because it was selling like crazy and, therefore, popular. He had go-against-the-grain in his DNA. ... Having said all that, he did find some amazing sounds and this pedal can't really get there. So it was probably a bit of both being a sound-snob (he and his tech modified a lot of gear until it was just perfect) and anti-establishment. Either way, this pedal didn't stand a chance to win him over.

@@TaylorDanley I think it's only second to the metal zone as far as the worst destortion pedal I've ever tried. 😂 Too each his own though. I think the best pedal / distortion I've tried has been believe it or not the Blues driver by Boss. I do like the Ds1 thouggh too, but I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and it was loads of records. 😂.. Tue Rat is even better for high gain stuff. At least the one I tried in the 80s sounded great.
