Comment for algorithmic bump. But since I'm here I feel inclined to mention that the last episode was profound for me as I realized my life's belief structure closely resembles what James calles hermeticism. I've never been much into the occult as I'm naturally an empiricist or objectivist, but I do somewhat believe in the Perennial Philosophy, so to speak. Read Aldous Huxley's book by that name as a teanager, studied zen Buddhism, and took a lot of psychedelics that confirmed those insights of oneness through direct "spiritual" experiences. But I never extrapolated it into a gnostic belief that required other people to do anything at all, for salvation has already arrived, and the world is already perfect within its imperfections. My natural disposition is very libertarian and I've been a constitutional conservative who votes republican ever since I discovered Ron Paul in 2007. But I'm still a hippie psychonaut buddhist musician, lol. James Lindsay has become a fascination for me over the past couple years and I've listened to all his interviews and podcasts, some multiple times. He's brilliant, as we all know. I've also become a big fan of Steven Hicks work. Excited to did into this lecture. Peace and Love to y'all. BTW, H.I.P.P.I.E is an acronym that stands for Highly Intelligent Person Pursuing Infinite Enlightenment, but it also stands for Hairy Imbecile Pompously Projecting Intellectual Excrement. The problem is that they both look the same and you can't tell the difference until you talk to them. lol.

To make anything out of the rosiecrucian literature you must have the IQ as well as the training in the scientific method + a big enough overview of cultural history, in order to understand where it is flawed and where it points to something interesting or relevant for knowledge. Most people lack that, this is just a natural variation that is a fact on today's stage of the evolution of the human organism and mind. Most people waste their time on trying to read stuff their minds aren't smart enough to comprehend the flaws or strengths of, this is a typical side of the consumption culture, the political society and the religious society. People naturally like wishful thinking and entertainment but that is far away from making you a scholar.

The Seven Hermetic principles for example (to me) are COMMON SENSE. To them...its somehow the "devil" or evil...? These people are sooooo deluded & lazy in their collective worldview of concentrated ignorance & religiosity that most times I cant even say forsure that we're dealing with "humans" anymore (& thats me being "nice") They are completely possessed by the egregores that are ignorance, apathy, fear (& I can go on & on) Whoever has the audacity to try & make sense of the ancient world, along with its timeless wisdom (of BOTH polarities, mind you) using a "modern mind" is ABSOLUTELY playing themselves. James, I really appreciate your work. It’s needed. One point I’d make, don’t over generalize or lump hermetics and Gnosticism into a collective ideal. In my findings, those traditions should be practiced by the individual. The principles are just guidelines to personal development and ultimately mental growth. It’s seems most mystery schools follow this format. Those traditions are for the individual and promote self mastery. (Help yourself, before you help others). Also the piece collectivists seem to ignore. With that said, I completely agree these mystery school principles were hijacked by marxists. Humanity and it’s search for meaning… they needed a spiritual component to sell the bill of goods.

What I’m particularly interested in is why any philosophy is so attractive to many people and gains many adherents. *Especially* given the fact that the adherents largely do not understand the underlying philosophy. They glom onto something which appears attractive for some reason to them without understanding its foundation. Perhaps it’s just that philosophies are inherently “naturally selected” based on their apparent superficial attractiveness or their suitability to promote a particular agenda?

Low barriers to entry. Knowledge is tiered. Attractive philosophies are attractive and “elevating” at all tiers: superficially, intermediately, and adeptly. It’s rare for anyone to understand anything at a truly adept level (I can’t think of anything I’m *adept* at), but since most adherents to any given philosophy are superficial, most of their community and actions take place at the superficial level. Therefore, the philosophies that are the most superficially attractive are the most popular. Stoicism isn’t superficially attractive, because it demands one to give up worries about things beyond one’s control, and accept suffering. Gnosticism, meanwhile, *is* superficially attractive because it pretends to explain everything in the universe. Both philosophies go much deeper than the superficial, and so they both have adherents, but Gnosticism has a lower barrier to entry, because one can live without moral fiber, ethics, or self-control yet still grasp the Gnostic’s superficial message. So, Gnosticism is far more popular (if more diluted) than Stoicism.

The original Kybalion warns about theology. Specifically. There has been spread a partially false Kybalion by the religious clergies of christianity including some claimed "gnostic" schools but I'd say these have become jesuittified during the last centuries, they are not actually gnostics. Original knowledge schools, indigenous nomads (just like modern atheism) had no concept of the "totality" or anything "almighty". Most of this allness concept was a pollution from theology of islam and christianity, and from parts of the judaic theology through the late medievals and onwards. And of course from the translations of the scholar Mauro Bigliano of ancient hebrew texts this even more clearly understates and shows this problem, in how he to his own surprise found that words showing plural forms of "men", "rulers", "scholars" ,the "steppe winds" were all wrongly translated into "god".
@KibyNykraft Жыл бұрын
..and of course, one can't create a something (mass and light forms) out of a *nothing* (space/infinity in the definition of a background). All energy states are localities as energy states different from space itself (also of course including more dubious or disputed types of energy forms like "dark matter" needing to be a form of charge field dynamics /ambient charge, if existing in a non-atom form- particle form). As above so below = all apparent scales of nature operate from a range of principles that are the same (fractals, vibrations and torsions). Nature is 100 percent mechanical on the "bed" of space (the infinite nothing). Now this is not a matter of philosophy as this is all that science has proved historically ,there is no scientific proof for anything else. There are claims of metaphysical qualities to space or to time etc etc but nothing of this is proved by *science*. It usually appears just as mathematical abstractions or neoplatonist/modernist pseudophilosophy. Time = the framework of observation from relative motions. To get time, one must choose the points of reference, which will be comparing the reduced distance of objects in motion as well as registring increasing entropy like heat dispersal from a source. There is no "inherent" time "in" space, there is no arrow of time, there is no "timespace" or "spacetime" literally.
@KibyNykraft Жыл бұрын
(the reason why the human mind is in "principle" comparable to the "cosmos" is the mechanical reason ; the human mind = charge, it is a field of particle dynamics.. A wave is only possibly created by spinning particles moving curvedwise, aggregatedly (many spinning particles together form a wave by aggregated particle-wave motion...) There is no such thing as "particle-wave duality", there are no waveforms in or of space itself. To have a wave, you must have mechanical units that operate spinwise. Spin a spinning top toy on your table. Dip it in paint or ink beforehand. Keep a paper sheet under it. While spinning, push it lengthwise. Its energy momentum change from the induced energy relative to Earth gravity will make it wobble. Its motion will draw a wave on the paper. That is a 2d representation geometrically of a double helix, which is a 3d wave. Much of "theoretical physics" and present-day claimed gnosticism is pure superstition. There is no wave-particle duality, only wave mechanics in space. In string theory by Greene one does not define the string as a string (!) One defines it as a point. Well what is a point. There are no literal points.... The world does not work by randomness nor by godly time arrows, it works only by relative energy mechanics.. For strings to be relevant in nature at a subparticle scale they need to be having a vibratory extendedness, being fully einsteinian 4d)

However, I make the distinction between applying this type of thinking to symbolism/"immaterial things," /"ultimate reality" and material, empirical reality. It's not the lens, it's the target. The dissolution of a lot of distinctions in metaphysical thought can bring people together and reveal that no one has the final say in things that transcend our limited grasp (and transcend our perceivable reality). Whereas, the dissolution of material, cultural, epistemological, scientific boundaries, in a hubristic attempt to CREATE the *transcendent on Earth* is dangerous. You have to fight fire with fire, or ideology with ideology, or religion with religion. This is why we shouldn't just have a defensive and negative approach in dealing this these false religions, we need an offensive and positive alternative. Namely, Christian postmillennialism and reconstruction. As Ken Gentry said, "Postmillennialists do not believe in the inherent goodness of man. But non-Postmillennialists seem to believe in the inherent weakness of the Gospel." We need to not merely attempt to be used of God to help transform hearts, but also to transform society. The problem with these non-Christian movements is not that they are trying to shape society. It's that they are attempting to do it with false and evil worldviews and false religions. Only the true religion can do it, and do it right. This is why Jesus' statement in the Lord's Prayer, "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN" is the Christian antidote and alternative to non-Christian "as below so above" (or non-Christian "as above, so below").

According to Theodotus:, "the gnostic is one has come to understand who we were, and what we have become; where we were, and into what we have been thrown whither we are hastening; from what we are being released; what birth is, and what is rebirth." "Into what we have been thrown" is reminiscent of Heidegger's Geworfenheit thrownness or being thrown into existence or dasein. So gnosis offers a theoria or a Gewissenheit -an inner conviction based on conscience and faith a looking at the divine to be able to directly perceive what it means to be truly human.

What I feel like was unfairly stated in this talk, was that James Lindsay mentioned Perennialism or the "Sophia Perennis" in combination with New Age thinking, Hermeticism and Gnosticism, when Perennialism according to thinkers like Schuon, Guenon and Coomorswamy really is nothing like this Hermetic syncretism.

Just finished and some of Lindsey's points are pretty goofy. He somehow equates some ideas with Inherently gnostic, just because gnostics have some version of the idea. If you guys want a better Christian deconstruction of gnostism check out Church of the Eternal Logos.

Thanks, James. You're so good with putting this all together. It's that math background. It's the algebra thing I never liked that you are using to formulate how these similarities relate to one another. IE, you have to apply the same process to one side of the equation as you do the other. That somehow corresponds with these understandings. Pilat asks Christ, "Yeshua, what is truth. I AM the way the truth and the light. Thank God we have the truth as the light in this deception.

Not everyone that likes occult philosophy is a “leftist” so let’s get that outta the way. Those are usually pseudo occultists and are usually aesthetic or just outright embarrassing to the actual occultists.

The fact you're talking crap about hermeticism as if it has something to actually do with Marx is ridiculous. You are misresenting the ouroboros and it's irrational to somehow think there's something wrong with as above, so below. Hermeticism has nothing to do with "woke"ness.

Jesus was one of those crazy hippies that was killed for his gospel about love, forgiveness, kindness, empathy, oh and that he and the father are one. Its dangerous to let the secret out that we are all God and that, "The Kingdom of God is spread out upon the earth, and men do not see it". Modern Christians have moved so far away from the message of Jesus, who did not even want to be worshipped.

A healthy culture is caused by a marriage between Faith and Reason. Science and religion are divided, but don't fight each other - that's the point. While gnosticism looks like a twisted way to unite them - it uses scientific means for religion, and mystic explanations for the realm of reason.

I would argue that Mr. Lindsay's disdain for Gnosis comes from his never having experienced it. There are a few different ways to achieve it, one of which is through a near death experience. I was a Satanist (not a devil worshipper) for 22 years before my NDE. However, I encountered what I can only describe as God during my time dead. I've experienced this three times. What James is describing is the actual truth... from what I saw when I was dead, Gnosticism (the light side of it) is the closest thing I've seen to the truth I witnessed. Traditional theology is all based off the Roman edit of the Bible. To call Gnosticism pessimistic is to completely misunderstand it. Yeshua was the son and emissary of the true living God. The great consciousness from which all consciousness eminates.
