"FLY ME TO THE MOON" is required listening from Old Blue Eyes (aka Frank). Frank played the character Sky Masterson in the movie version of Guys & Dolls which is a well known Broadway musical. That song is part of that show. Pretty much every High School and Community Theater Company has done Guys & Dolls at some time.

What made Don Rickles famous was that Don was performing in an early Las Vegas. Frank, heavily rumored to be part of organized crime, along with his entourage, walked into the room. Not missing a beat, Don said "Hey Frank, make yourself at home, hit someone!!" The audience, in terror, looked at Frank, who laughed. Don became famous.

I was just about to recommend the same thing. In addition to all the crooners, songs, and comedy, I love the "time capsule" element of seeing Bing Crosby's meta-dialogue where he talks to Frank Sinatra like Frank and the Rat Pack are the young punks who are playing fast and loose with the style while Frank talks to Bing like Bing's the old school, old style guy out of touch with the kids. It's a fun reminder that, all older music and older styles - no matter how old-fashioned and quaint they might seem in any given "modern times" - were once "the crazy thing the kids are doing" that alarms older generations.

It's a play on the old phrase, "May Lady Luck smile on you." He's asking "Lady Luck" to act like a lady and stay by his side for the entire evening. If you like this type of Sinatra, there's a more obscure tune that you might really like: "Nice and Easy." Very cool tune. Enjoy!

@@LynneConnolly my bad. I forgot that it's as well known and universally referenced as Luck Be a Lady, My Way, One for my Baby, Fly Me to the Moon, I've Got You Under My Skin, Strangers in the Night, Summer Wind, That's Life, et cetera. In fact, now that I think about it, Nice and Easy is so ubiquitous - especially to Millennials - there's simply no need for anyone to "react" to it because everyone's already heard it before. What was I thinking?

Sinatra was near the peak of his powers when this was recorded. As such, he could afford the best in arrangers, orchestras, and musicians. Here it is Nelson Riddle, an absolute legend in the jazz and popular music business as an arranger and orchestrator. Sinatra would also even specify individual musicians that he wanted in the band. For example, Alvin Stoller on drums and the Candoli brothers in the trumpet section. Check out a sampling of Sinatra's earlier recordings, too. His recording of Poinicana from 1947, from his Columbia Records years, with the orchestra conducted by Axel Stordahl, for example, is a seldom-noticed gem of a recording from Sinatra's earlier years. As for Nancy Sinatra, check out her recording of "This Town," her best recording, in my opinion.

Frank’s style changed over the years. This was the swinging Frank. Frank was the coolest cat with the golden voice. Lots of nicknames: Ole Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, the Voice. He had a golden voice. One of the Kennedy’s were once asked “What is it about this guy?” The answer? “Women want to f**k him, they want to mother him, but you never want to cross him. He loved to entertain, all night long after a performance. He was extremely generous with his money: charities, the help, whoever was waiting on people, wherever he was. Children’s charities. But he had a bad temper if he snapped. He used to admit he had a 24 carat manic depression problem. Everyone knew it. He commanded respect wherever he went….they called him Mr. Sinatra. Only his closets pals called him Frank.

So Frank was the biggest headliner in Las Vegas. When the Las Vegas strip was very new, they had a hard time getting people to travel there to gamble. One casino offered Frank a percentage of the profits if he would get his Hollywood pals to come and perform. Which he did! He helped build Las Vegas! Las Vegas sprang up after Castro took over Cuba (which was the adult playground prior to Vegas). In those first decades, the casinos were run by Italian mob. Frank is Italian and knew these guys from his days in New Jersey, growing up. This was a huge hit for Frank and he sang this song everywhere at his concerts.

If you've seen The Godfather, Johnny Fontaine - the singer - was Frank Sinatra. The horse head is what got Frank the role in the movie From Here to Eternity.
@beckygrant2258
@beckygrant2258 2 жыл бұрын
No. Not true. Johnny Fontaine was played by Al Martinez. He was cast as a Frank Sinatra-type. The horse head incident did not happen in real life. It was a film based on Mario Puzo’s novel, The Godfather, which was a bestseller at the time. The horse head incident was in the book. The character in the book was based on an Italian singer who is connected to crime families, like Frank Sinatra kind of was. His family wasn’t directly connected, but he was from New Jersey and those clubs that he started in were often mob-owned…so he had some connections. When the mob created Las Vegas strip casinos, they had difficulty getting people to come out there. They hired Frank and gave him 10% ownership in one of the Casinos, asking him to get his friends to come out and perform at the casinos. And he did. He helped build Las Vegas.

Yeah, you could definitely say that Frank Sinatra was an actor. He had 69 acting credits to his name, most of them feature films, but also had a few t.v. series appearances and t.v. movies. I'd have to say that he made just as fine an actor as he did a singer, and I can't think of another singing superstar who had as many films to his credit as Frank Sinatra.

I highly recommend "I've Got You Under My Skin" by Frank. My Mom sang this to me while she was pregnant with me. It was our song when I was little. She passed at age 46, back in 1985. Every time I hear that song now, it reminds me of her. It's a wonderful song and I think you two will really enjoy it!! 🎶💜🎶😊

Frank, along with his idol Billie Holiday are the ONLY vocalists born in 1915 who still influence performers today. No Jim Morrison, Miles Davis, Elvis Costello, BB King, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Iggy Pop, Marvin Gaye, and Amy Winehouse without The Voice. Amy named her debut album after him. His Capitol period 1953-1962 remains peerless. His onstage performance at the Royal Festival Hall 1962 captures him at his very best. A class act.

Frank Sinatra acted in numerous films, plays...& of course his concerts! He was one heck of a performer! The Tender Trap with Debbie Reynolds is a comedy you might like! Guys & Dolls is a musical with Marlon Brando! It's a classic! He was just...part that era where we had so many well rounded performers! Him & Sammy Davis Jr were really good friends. There was an incident when they were suppose to perform together at a hotel where they were supposed to stay at....they said Sammy couldn't stay there! Frank told them if Sammy couldn't stay... he wouldn't stay or perform there! They quickly backed down! He never tolerated that stuff!

Hey guys! Luck Be A Lady came from the 1950 Broadway musical Guys and Dolls. It was later revised into a movie in 1955, starring Marlan Brando, Frank Sinatra, Gene Simmons, and Vivian Blaine. Although the song was sung by the character Nathan Detroit, Brando, it will forever be Sinatra's song!!! I beg you to see the movie adaptation.. You will not regret it, I PROMISE!!!

This is a song from the musical "Guys and Dolls," in which Frank starred as Nathan Detroit. He wanted the central role of Sky Masterson, which was given to Marlon Brando (who can't sing!) Marlon disliked Frank, and was deliberately awkward. One scene, in which Frank as Nathan was to eat cheesecake (Frank didn't like cheesecake) Marlon kept getting wrong, meaning that Frank had to eat slice after slice of the stuff, until he was sick and they had to stop for the day. Frank got his own back by singing the song like it should be sung.

Frank won an Oscar for his role in "From Here to Eternity" and was in plenty of other films. In the movie, "The Godfather," the character of Johnny Fontaine was presumably based on him--since he took great offense when the book came out about that character's ties to the mob and the similarities to Frank's career.

"Luck" is often humanized, and called "Lady Luck" - it's a very old saying. The ancient Romans called her "Fortuna". Frank's not talking about some woman who's with him, he's talking to "Lady Luck" herself, asking her to be kind to him.
