We really don't know the reasons why the army has fast tracked the procurement. What is the purpose and so on. Its not like there was a tested and tried product already available in the home market that was bypassed. Battle rifles are not something that you give specifications for production and deployed in short notice. Maybe there is a requirement for long distance engagement battles in the mountainous border regions. These rifles being of larger calibre with heavy recoil would be conservatively shot saving ammo in a protracted conflict.

@@spaceman69 Wrong, at least for the most part. Every nation that leads in some form of military industry initially goes into bouts of protectionism so that its indigenous industries grow securely enough to be competitive. US, UK, France and even South Korea did it. Hell Korea did ot with their armored vehicles, submarines and even their semiconductor industries. You need local markets to grow your indigenous products. Asking a startup to "shake the industry" while competing with super-rich established companies is naive and unrealistic. Military and military industry grow in concert and YES, it SHOULD be the military's DUTY to encourage, patronize and grow local industries. Several American white papers have made this argument from their world war era bomber sights to the Bradley Fighting Vehicle all suffered tough resistance from naysayers and deindustrializers. America protected its companies and now they lead these sectors. So no, globalism is not whatmakes you safe. Globalism is good for convenience, it's not good for independence. And yes Indian army has to accept Indian weapons regardless of their "shortcomings" real or imagined and over a long period of time work with said companies to improve them. Like Vivek Krishnan said, 'one of the problems with defence procurement in india is wanting things NOW' what he didn't say as he is more diplomatic is "Indian military rarely shows any forethought for long term thinking".

This looks like a emergency arms procurement by the army and in that regard the army made the right decision by going for the sig 716i because its a proven platform with established production capacity to meet the army needs. Sss would've required more time and capital to scale up production .

Enemies at the gates won’t wait for your plans. Our defense forces have already faced delays in getting high-grade weapons due to the Atmanirbharta push. Don't get me wrong-I fully support self-reliance, but we need to produce world-class, high-quality equipment first. Companies should lead in R&D and stop relying solely on government support. Make the best products at scale, and the market will follow. For you, it's business; for those on the front lines, it’s their lives. Our chaps deserve the best we can buy in the market (in India or outside).
@HellBot-gi5si2 ай бұрын
No Indian, this is what happened. The Chinese soldiers on your boarder wear "titanium body armor". The Indian army needed a rifle and ammunition that could penetrate that body armor right now. So they went with the Sig 716 with the 7.62 x 51 ammunition. India will still develop it's own assault rifles but for now this was a temporary solution to a pressing problem you have on your border.

Lol😂@@HellBot-gi5si Army is crazy, they want other countries to buy from our companies and will not invest in their own country
@MegaSodom2 ай бұрын
@@dasarpurug army has no push for other countries to buy our stuff. Army itself is a buyer in the market. It’s the companies and our government trying hard to push, which they should. Fun fact: nobody buys our guns, not because our army does not buy it, but because they are not up to mark. The things that are up to mark like infrared goggles and missiles are bought both by our defense forces and others as well. It’s simple as that. Produce great quality stuff which solves the problem at hand and people will buy.

Indian army soldiers are also not provided with good quality basic gears like:- 1. Tactical boots which lasts atleast for a year or two. 2. Training shoes which lasts atleast a year. 3. Gud quality camouflage uniforms with rip stop and quick dry fabric for training and duty. 4. tactical vests for magazines and useful tools which can withstand numerous trainings and operations. 5. ballistic eyewear

While indian arms industry seeks a global footprint for their wpns so the same rule of choice of the wpns should apply with the user ie a soldier who is going to fight the en with it ..his confidence on the wpn n his needs should come first....but I would reiterate that this procurement is part of an order already on the table in 2019 when there were no Indian companies available to fulfill.the requirements..the reasons for the dalay in the follow on order or timing if the order could be financial constraints , wpn diplomacy or even political compulsions of a govt not in majority.

How many aircraft can HAL deliver in a year? 8 to 14, depending on their mood! The IAF is down to 32 squadrons- our projected need is 42! So calculate the time needed to get to 42!! And this rifleman is bigger than HAL, and will live up to his boasts? Keep dreaming guys. They all talk.

This SSS fellow. Can you make a SIG. No. Are you capable. NO. So please educate yourself first. Battlefield is not a testing ground. Soldiers die when rifles have glitches in encounters. It's not a highway car. It's life and death.

You know kw when soldiers actually die? When they don't have a constant supplies of weapons and their parts during the wars, and their guns are nothing better than a paper weight. If there's ever a war with CHINA can you really guarantee that US will always be on our side, that they will keep providing steady stream of spare parts and bullets to our forces. Don't you think they will force our government to do their bidding if they manage to take over small arms scenarios like they do to NATO countries. look at the war in ukrain, US is supporting them now but if Trump gets elected next, he will force ukrain to stop resisiting and call a ceasefire if they don't he will cut off supplies which will have the same effect. Our generals don't mind that as long as they keep getting gifted with apartment in Florida and foreign scholarship for their undeserving children. But they should

Why should he make a Sig Sauer? He has made his own. That could have been tested against the Sig and the better one selected. He was not asking for it not to be tested. If a country which can send spacecraft to the moon cannot make a simple mechanical weapon which fires projectiles, then something is seriously wrong. Are we saying that what illiterate tribesmen in Peshawar can do, we are unable to match with our PhDs etc?

Just 72k for war. Even with 72k, during war time there will be more wear tear of weapon for which you need spare parts. Since we are procuring sigs directly from US, you have to import those too. Give any private players money they can make any quantity and quality you want.
@sahastradhara2 ай бұрын
Anyone who has been weapons enthusiasts for a long time would k lnow, that at this point our army generals are more concerned with looking cool and getting their Swiss accounts filled than the cpuntys interest. Their motto is keep delaying ordering o sigenous stuff for as long as possible so in the end phoren maal can make it's way in. They destroyed ARJUNS , they have successfully nearly destroyed ATAGS and of course they will destroy small arms private players too. Foren maal means rokda saheb. I hope they learn something from their counterparts in the navy. Who have been at forefront of indigenisation and also saved other platforms like LCA TEJAS from meeting the same fate as ARJUNS

It’s not just about manning a soldier with a rifle, there are a lot of other factors involved. When you give a man a new rifle, you have to train him to fire it, maintain it, remove stoppages, carry it and then change his other gear according to the rifle, like carry sling, magazine pouch and other accessories. Now, it’s not just the rifle you procure, there are other attachments also, which have already been procured. Other than these factors, it would just not keep up with the uniformity. Considering all of that, it was justified of the army to go ahead with the planned procurement.

It's not that the government does not want atma nirbharta or the forces does not want to do it. One has to only loook at the recent developments and also election interference by other governments by meeting radical opposition leadership and that too right at the time of the elections. In that context it is even more important to understand the concerted effort being plowed to destablize the gov. Reduce it autonomous sovereignty and continue forcing it to buy from overseas providers. Overseas jobs, economy etc etc.. The previous 10 yrs the BJP turned our defense export on its head. Then the election did not hand the BJP what they needed to shatter this, once and for all, and now we are back to square one: Jaativaadi. History repeats: 780, 1180, 1260, 1757, 1857 .. every single time castesim has been played again and again and again..

It's not only about the calibre, these weapons also need maintenance and spares. From EME point of view, the lesser the variety, the easier are the logistics as range of spares are less and depth is more. Having an assortment of weapons makes maintenance and supply a nightmare. That said, a long term planning process is definitely needed to encourage local manufacture. The weak area is generally the metallurgy.
