God as my witness . . I wrote an excellent song a while back called Running for Cover . A real GEM . Yet something was missing. Couldn’t quite put my finger on it . . Worked on the song for a few weeks . Came home after work and got right to it . A REALLY great tune . Something was missing . As I was driving my truck , on the WDRV radio station ( the Drive ) the DJ said , “ here’s a song from ‘76 that is instantly recognizable not only because of its beautiful intro , but because Tom Scholtz used his beloved 12 string on it “ . THAT WAS IT 😮 ! I immediately went to Guitar Center and bought a beautiful Breedlove 12 string . Finished the new song and went on a complete brainstorming writing spree and never looked back . Trust me , you’re a great player . YOU NEED A 12 STRING 😊

Another Great choice JJ. This one is great practice for newer players to work on their hand control. You are so correct on your lessons. Everyone has to work on their own style of each song. Embellish a song to make it unique to ones own playing. And Just like you I can't really sing it and play it at the same time.

You kind of have to be particularly interested in people who used them regularly (say Tom Petty, even Warren Zevon) or a specialist in people who used them exclusively (Leo Kottke, Gordon Lightfoot) to be worth it. Acoustic-12 parts are surprisingly far between in classic rock when you think about it: The Beatles only had a handful; ditto even with Simon & Garfunkel.
@AdaptivePhenix
@AdaptivePhenix 3 жыл бұрын
My solution is the Variax. Particularly in a live performance, the emulations of Acoustic and 12-string can be quite amazing when running through the PA (not a guitar amp though).

Hi James! I love your channel - only recently discovered and love going through all the past videos. I am having difficulty with the tuning here ( I am fairly a new player)- is it just the low E tuned differently? Approx to what note lol? Thank you!
@jamesjames9275
@jamesjames9275 3 жыл бұрын
All the strings are tuned down. Tune your E string to mine, and then tune all the other strings based on that. As I said, you don't need to know what note that is -- it's whatever the Rolling Stones decided it was on that day. Use your ears, not some electronic tuner.

Hi, this guitar is a J-200 or an SJ-200? It's the abalone on the bridge that isn't the same as others. Is this a special issue? Thank you for all your fantastic lessons.
@jamesjames9275
@jamesjames9275 3 жыл бұрын
A J200 and an SJ 200 are the same thing. They were originally called an SJ for Super Jumbo, but most people just call them a J200. Some models have the inlay in the moustache bridge, some don’t. It depends on the year. Mine is from around 2002.

Howdy J.J., Not sure if you've put something like this out already, but you know what I would be excited to spend money on? It would be a collection of your guitar videos that folks like me could download all in one place. For example, having a patreon-type account where patrons who spend a one-time fee could download a file that includes all your videos. I was thinking that paying for that download would be a cool way of thanking you for putting out all these great videos for free, which have helped so many of us, and would allow us to be able to reference your videos offline while learning your guitar songs in a shack in the middle of the desert, 1000's of miles away from civilization. In any case, a big thank you for your amazing videos, and for helping us all along in our various guitar journeys. Much obliged, old boy. ~NICO

Re: tuning to the recording. I learned recently from our piano teacher that the apparent change in pitch on the recording can be an artifact of the process of making the record. My son is a very high level pianist (wins competitions) and found some video game music he wanted to learn. We bought the sheet music and the official (vinyl) recording the composer made. As we listened to the record, his first impression...the pitch is off by a bit. In this case a bit sharp.
@marcsullivan7987

Yes. They may have had instruments tuned to that pitch, OR, the pitch of the master recording may have been altered (sped up, slowed down, etc) after the performance.

I'm pretty sure Mick and Keith wrote it, one of the first things they wrote together. There's a Brian Jones fanatic who will undoubtedly eviscerate me for saying this, but if Brian could write songs like this (especially at that point in the band's history), he'd have been their primary songwriter.

5/11/2021 @cjsligo Jones I love the "jingle-jangle" sound of a nice 12 string. Even though JJ says that for now, he's not interested in one, I insist that they are extremely useful & appropriate for many songs. Surely, many of JJ's fans & students would enjoy if he did acquire a 12-string and incorporated it in his "tool box" of guitars.

I am not enabled to have high end 12s but some yamahas ( gasp) have nice narrow (1.82") necks. Im holding a very lively , "leaf" head stock FG460 for instance that starts talking soon as I pick it up. but what do I know? I still think 944's (S2) were a great Porsche. ( yea Ill try a old Tak someday) Thanks for all the lesson modes lately. Tis most beneficial to give us a tuning reference when required per recording. Your singing is coming across great . Loose it or lose it I alwaz sez !

There is a prog rock group that had a following in the '70s called Rennaisance. Five-octave female lead singer and great orchestrations. They did a simple tune called "I Think of You".
