Tesla’s are really the first mass produced Electric Vehicles, now aged 14 years.
Starting with the Tesla Roadster released in 2008, we began servicing these vehicles in 2012, and have begun to observe and document aging issues.
This tracking of failure events allows us to do trend analysis, applying this data to not only predict Tesla Roadster issues, but translate and forecast how the next generation Tesla vehicles will age.
In this video, we explore the evolution of Tesla vehicles, what unites them, what separates them, and what Tesla has learned to make the future generation of vehicles even better.

Strong deductive reasoning, although I could see myself justifying the sunglasses just to prove that knowing what your talking about is badass. Especially if I could pull it off as well as this guy does. Also, he also likely memorizes at least some lines where there is too great a distance between subject and camera for most teleprompters to work. if it's just flashing 1-3 words, that can be hard to sound natural like he does. Those are the ones that work from a great enough distance for that exterior downward yaw shot for instance. Important to note, while at times he looks off frame, there are significant periods where he does not. While I did not have the best lighting conditions, I looked for a sideways reflection of a teleprompter and saw none. Some teleprompters are fairly low light though, and hiding it in the shadow may have been sufficient.

The best review of a car you can get comes from an honest mechanic. Salesmen wouldn't tell the truth and car reviewers usually look at new cars or quirky cars, but they don't consider the long-term ownership. For those of us who prefer buying a car once a decade (or less), we want to have some confidence that it won't become an expensive basket case within that time. I'd rather, in fact, be able to sell or give away a car with a lot of life left in it - so the next owner doesn't get burned on it. I would feel bad selling a car that's near the end of life on a $20K component. (Even $5k is outside a lot of people's means.)

If there are just a failure in electric cirquit or few damaged cells, the battery can be repaired. That is not going to be very common. Typically cells age evenly especially when temperature management is good. The daisy chain failure which was mentioned in the video means that practically all cells have aged into level where they can't operate properly. When used right, a pack can withstand a lots of miles especially if they are driven over short period of time. If the car is closing 20 year age, it becomes more important what have been average charge level or temperature during the storage. Batteries like to be in 50% charge level and stored in a cool place. Hot is generally bad since it accelerates unwanted chemical reactions.

Good video. I believe Tesla battery packs will only become more difficult to repair in the newer models. Like Apple has done with its batteries, Tesla is moving toward tighter integration of the battery with the rest of the vehicle in order to improve range and reduce initial cost, with repairability sacrificed in the process. I foresee many of these packs ending up being shipped to third world countries where 12 year old boys will pick through them and harvest the recyclable materials. Not good.

It depends what angle they want to play. I think their main goal is to reduce defective cells in the first place rather than needing a battery replacement. But I think if EVs are going to become sustainable, the only way is if the batteries are easily replaceable. Luckily Elon is a bit more in touch with the user than Apple CEOs so I think once EV’s start to really become common, this will happen

Correction: The one is not around the planet, it is heading towards Mars right now. It is actually not in orbit around Earth.
@gazorbo.
@gazorbo. 3 жыл бұрын
@@redbaron6805 Correction : the Roadster is in a heliocentric orbit that crosses the orbit of Mars and reaches a distance of 1.66 au from the Sun. With an inclination of roughly 1 degree to the ecliptic plane, compared to Mars' 1.85° inclination, this trajectory by design cannot intercept Mars, so the car will neither fly by Mars nor enter an orbit around Mars. It eventually comes back close to Earth's orbit. Overall the Roadster's orbit is around the orbit of the Earth, therefore it is around Earth.

@@gazorbo. Typically, we don't refer to objects being in orbit around earth when they have a large orbit which spans Mars and other planets.

Great video. My only disagreement is with the assertion there are fewer parts. There are not. There are probably hundreds of thousands of more parts. The issue is that they are entoumbed in extremely expensive modules that are under Tesla's lock and key.

Very professional, knowledgeable and professional. One of the best and most worthwhile videos on KZbin. Gruber motor company has secured its future for 100 years. Gruber motors should become an official partner / official third party service and batter centre for Tesla motor. Like Mr Gruber says, Tesla must not end up with a global reputation that their cars are throw away , or their cars are defunct after 8-10 years.

How long do you expect a $5k repair to last vs a $20K new pack? If the cells start wearing out, might as well replace the whole pack, the labor to take it our, fix a few cells and put it back is probably 80% of the cost. Once you hit the back end of the the 'bathtub curve' , it's over for that whole pack.

@@TD_YT066 I expect that refurb to last maybe 2-3 years and 20,000-30,000km before it needs to be done again and the same again before full replacement. At that point the customer would be paying the price of a new compact car to keep their 15 year old tired worn out car running.

Good on you guys for making sure these cars have a second life. If Tesla is not equipped to do battery restorations, hopefully they begin to do outsourcing and referrals to authorized third parties to fix and refurbish batteries, it could be a good cottage industry for a lot of the technicians who will be put out of work in the ICE vehicle sector. This expands beyond Tesla, as VW, Hyundai, GM, etc will also need to have businesses equipped to repair batteries.

Very interesting, and thanks. My low mileage UK Roadster has never had a PEM clean, but has been serviced by Tesla a few times, so hopefully they at least clean out all the forced air system. Roll on having a facility like yours in the UK or the EU.
