After lots of rain, I went to the big riverside dumpsite, hoping the high water might have revealed some good things to find. I made a friend along the way too.

As a child I imagined far-off magical places like England to be COMPLETELY different than the Pacific Northwest area of Washington, where I live. While your homes and architecture are vastly different; your stone walls and walk paths, mill ponds etc. unique...the vegetation along the river and yes, the river itself, could be in my vicinity and look so familiar! Thistles, butterfly bush, nettles, and many of the trees are the same. Thank you for your videos - fascinating to me to tag along and enjoy a landscape much longer inhabited than mine!

As a child, I imagined even fairly close places to be completely different, often shaped by historical books I'd read... so Paris in my head was basically a stage set for a production of the Three Musketeers... in reality, it was a dirty big city, crowded and overwhelming... pretty much the same in many respects to the big cities I already knew. I've heard from quite a few people of the similarities between here, and the Pacific Northwest, I'd like to visit sometime and feel the differences. 🙂

I was wondering about the health of that river, so seeing the small fish is encouraging and taking trash is smart. Thanks Tom from USA.

It's actually a pretty healthy river around there, despite the trash spilling in... plenty of fish, birds, and otters. It's being closely monitored by the environment agency, because of the dumpsite... and I suspect that means some of the usual industrial polluters are on their best non-polluting behavior. 🙂

Thanks Lmb, it's something I've always enjoyed doing, and only a little bit harder while holding a camera in the other hand. There's a video waiting to be edited, in which I skimmed a stone, and a fish jumped out of the water; I think it was trying to catch the stone 🙂. I'm glad you enjoyed the butterfly, lichen and flowers.

Love the Shelly vase with the floral “violette” design. It dates from the 1920s. It’s kind of a mixture of art nouveau and art deco. I own one that is very similar but has a rose design. Found it years ago for sale in a charity shop for pennies. Didn’t know what it was, I just liked it because it looked a bit gothic and reminded me of tattoo designs.

Your walk was so various and so unexpected , but always a pleasure. Perhaps the two dancer figurines were collected by one person . I enjoyed hearing about the possibilities of wild boar, and or wild pigs in Yorkshire, as you found the tusk. I note at 25:25 a jawbone with teeth. Which brings me to the idea that I look at your videos on and off, and see different things in them sometimes. This time, I happened to glance away for a moment, but discovered that you had filmed a pair of ducks , which I missed the first time. Thankyou Tom, always a delight

We were pleased to see you negotiating the banks of the old river (Calder?) again Tom. Great to see the little fish, always cause for hope for the environment. The best find was that very colourful piece of pottery. Tom, on Monday we were taken on video walk through your beautiful town of Hebden Bridge; what a town. Two guys calling themselves Memory Seekers are currently showing various areas around West Yorkshire, God’s own country!

Thanks Ian and Sue, this was the river Aire in a neighboring valley. Memory Seekers looks like a good channel, thank you for telling me about them. They have an interesting format to their videos, one I could quite easily emulate... and it kind of makes me want to, as a sister channel to this one. Probably just an idle fancy, I've got too many projects to be going on with, but it'd be nice to travel around taking walks... and looking out for likely places to mudlark along the way. 🙂

The peacock butterfly was so stunning!!! The tiny fish and your impressive rock skipping made it a very fun day! Our Pacific Northwest has very different stream and rivers, with so many granite boulders and huge evergreen forests. If you come, which I hope you may, be very careful of bears. Also, closer to the Salish Sea, walking in the streams isn’t encouraged during Salmon season. When I was a child, the salmon made the rivers look like they were full of flames, with the backs of the dying spawning salmons’ backs going from edge to edge. The pounding of their fins into the pebbles and rocks made it seem as if trains were nearby. So of course there were lots of bears to dodge. Sadly my family had to sell our property in the mountains with its river frontage in the Cascade Mountains. But the memories live on. Going into abandoned copper mines and through through crumbling tunnels across deteriorating bridges. Waterfalls everywhere. But at the time, nothing to lark but beautiful stones. No Colonizer bits of history other than power lines with their glass and ceramic conductors or huge cedar pipes.

I enjoy finding more then having also. Back in the 80s i used to take a bunch of friends camping to pan for gold some of these guys couldnt find gold if it bit them. So i always carried a few small pickers with me and when they werent looking i would drop a couple of them into their pans i loved seeing their faces when they found them. Also their interest would renewed and the digging would get crazy. Never told them and it was all in fun. I really miss those trips. Thanks Tom

Very kind of you, kindling the enjoyment and enthusiasm of your friends. I bet they had a great time... much better than if they hadn't found anything in their pans. I once tried to surreptitiously make sure someone found a pipe bowl once, didn't need to worry... they found three on that outing. 🙂

Oh yes, that candle stick with faces would make fabulous jewelry! I love your areas to explore, can’t really do explorations like that here (in Florida). First of all, I don’t think we have many places that has such old relics and bottles, and secondly, you can’t really go near in the undeveloped area’s rivers, creeks or lakes because you never know when an alligator could pop out of the water. You always have to be aware that any body of water probably does harbor alligators. Look forward to seeing more of your videos, Tom. ✌🏼❤️

Thanks Lisa, and... yes, I'm quite lucky in where I live, not having to worry too much about dangerous creatures. I haven't even seen any of the one poisonous snake that I could possibly see... or the famously grouchy Pike in another river, which apparently likes to take a bite out of wading fishermen, didn't come near me when I was wading through his territory. I do watch a few youtubers, who scuba dive treasure hunt in Florida swim holes, and rivers... but they do seem to steer clear of rural creaks. I always wondered if they'd encounter an alligator. 🙂

Wonderful that you've illustrated 3 children's books. The view from your house is the most beautiful thing in your videos. I don’t know what your house is like, but if I had that view I would never want to leave home. It’s ethereal. Maybe it’s because I’m American and everything here seems so boring compared to the UK. I don’t know… I keep hoping I’ll be able to travel to the UK someday.
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 Жыл бұрын
It's a very small house, and a bit cramped inside with too much stuff. Even by UK standards, it's very small... and UK houses are usually about half the size of US ones of similar value. It's quite a nice place to live, and the views are good... but West Yorkshire has many better views (in my opinion), so getting out is appealing. I hope you get to visit the UK someday. 🙂

I hope to go back there and have another look soon, and perhaps film again. I hope you have fun with the milliputt. I think I prefer Supersculpey, for what I like to do in crafts, but milliput certainly has its place. 🙂

I share your admiration of yellow sunburst lichen! Wirral where I live is covered with it. Hope I get the chance to visit that dump someday as the old batteries and bottles are very appealing. The plastic does saddens me though and so does the broken detritus in the river. All the most reason to collect it I guess!
@tomburleigh9261

You'd be welcome to visit anytime, I'd do my best to be available to accompany you there... and other sites. The bottles are prone to glass sickness there, but such is the case in most places really. (My next video was filmed at a site, where the glass was near pristine... but that site is rapidly disappearing under a housing development). The plastic is a never-ending tide, but every little removed from the environment helps a little, and it all adds up. 🙂

A difficult day made easier by this lark... always so pleased to find a new posting. Yours videos really do rise to some new form of modern art. But someday, someone, will need to explain the appeal of a vulcanite bottle stopper to me. I assume it is the historical interest, but I'm voting for the glass ones when they turn up. And today for the butterfly. Thank you.

Sorry you've had a difficult day Artie. I'm glad my video has been a help. Vulcanite bottle stoppers were of historical interest to me, I went through a phase of researching all the old brewery companies, finding out what little I could about them. Now, I don't know... I take ones that I haven't seen before, and I hope that I'll have a craft use for them one day. I much prefer the glass ones too. 🙂

Thanks Louise, I plan to... at least, it's added to the list of craft project ideas and is still very appealing to me, if I can figure out how best to do it. And thank you so much for the pens, they're lovely to draw with. I've already made most of the next video, and I hadn't managed to draw anything I was happy to show in time... but they'll be used for drawing sketches for craft videos, very useful... and also for some drawing videos if I ever have the confidence to do those. 🙂

Well now that the dollar is a wee bit stronger, I decided that I could finally get you those pens that had been staring at me for a while. And as mentioned in my note - I buy the stuff that most interests me. Right now, for me, that's Sharpee pens of all colors. I ain't gonna lie: they smell good, so they're probably bad for my brain.

Sharpies do smell good. I haven't gotten the hang of drawing with them though; they tend to bleed a bit when I try. Possibly it's the paper I'm using. These Arteza pens haven't bled at all so far... and I was very glad to notice that they're a lot cheaper now than when I added them to the list. Cheaper, but I still hope I get good usage out of them, I'm trying hard to make none of the wishlist items lie unused in my craft room. 🙂
