berklee college of music (piano major) alumni here! Loved watching your videos in college. Still Love them. My mother wanted me to learn this so she could quite literally say “play it again sam” to me on Mother’s Day! Thanks so much for teaching the rudimentary basics and classics that often are long forgot by my generation. Keep the content coming! Keep teaching the millennials AND the GEN Z’s as well. And play it again sam!

Some can play, and some can teach. The great ones can do both, and they are the music. When the music becomes your voice, I believe the ear and the imagination rule. In any case, theory is the skeleton of the flesh and blood body of the music that seduces the mind. Theory did not write the Chaconne or As Time Goes By.

Kent, Kent, Kent! Last year I purchased your book which is great, but because if my own inability, I got so frustrated, I didnt play for almost a year! Mot your fault! But now, sick and home (not from virus) and self quarantined (due to virus), I’m drawn into the abyss again! But now, I can almost play better! All this time when I didnt play, and watched videos and thought about how I wished I could play! So practice makes perfect as they say, but maybe no practice helps sometime (if that makes any sense at all)!! Go figure!

Genius move to modulate down to C! I'd never thought of doing that. Obvious key change for me would be to move up to E to brighten it up for a finale. Now I need to find a singer who is prepared to have a go at dropping a minor third like that! :)

This is great. I am fairly familiar with this tune (have been playing an arr. from a great channel here on youtube) but your video gives me so many ideas and really helps in finding my own sound as I try to work out my own version. Since you started this channel I fell in love with drop 2 and locked hand voicings. Something that is hard to figure out yet becomes clear as day when you teach it. Congratulation on 1k subscribers! Rene

+RRTheN00bPwner Hi Rene...always great to hear from you! I spent a lot of time working up this arrangement and actually the drop 2 technique is rather new for me so I can't say that I'm totally fluid with it. It's been used a long time by top- notch big band and orchestra arrangers and you even see it in older transcriptions of classic standards and of course Bill Evans' transcriptions. Have you checked out the Barry Harris videos? He's one of the last great jazz piano legends still around and he uses that technique quite a bit. Thanks for keeping in touch and it's amazing having that many people subscribing to my channel; I hope to keep the inspiration going.

+Kent Hewitt I have spent hours watching every single Barry Harris video I could find. Most of it is way over my head but I keep going back to them and everytime I do, something new clicks with me. That man is simply amazing. The 6th diminished scale... man, if I could lnly finally figure that stuff out ^^. Haha. Drop 2 Voings ... not to many people seem to know about them these days, that's why it is so exciting that you are studying/teaching them! Lots of people (including myself) are looking for a certain sound - we all want to sound like Bille Evans don't we^^ - and drop 2 is exactly the sound I had in my head the second I first touched a piano.

+Kent Hewitt check out the video of Bill Harris playing "Be my Love" if you ever find the time! It is sublime. I would love to get more out of that video, but my chops and knowledge aren't quite there yet to do it without help. Be my Love is usually played in the "people's key" of C, which would make it easier to understand what he is doing. And it is a lovely tune to boot. If you were to make a tutorial of that in the style of your great teaching videos I would be over the moon ^^ Rene

When you're using chords in the melody, which position does the melody note usually take? For clarification when you play the Ab in the first part of the melody as a chord, is it the root note? the 3rd? the 5th? etc. Also, how do you know which chords to play? Is there a kind of order where maybe a 7th chord will lead into a m7 but would sound odd with a M7? or is it dependant on what you want it to sound like?
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
Hey.. brother McQueen! Thanks for writing!: There are general rules.... however your ear will tell you what sound you like... and it doesn't have to conform to sounds that are "expected". I would suggest for you to check out the 1st video I did on the locked hands technique. Also if you watch all my videos, they will give an overall knowledge that will answer these questions. But in this case the first note of the melody is the 3rd... so you would voice the chord as an Fm7 with the Ab on top. (2nd inversion). Check this: kzbin.info/aero/PLFuMibnl_h5b-4H5_cYxavlX5JeO1gYEh

Awesome Ken. Your lessons are a perfect accompaniment to your book. I understand where the chords in the introduction came from but how did you pick the F diminished scale ( resolving to F minor ). Rick, in the movie does not say "play it again Sam". This is the most famous movie phrase that has NEVER been said. In the scene where Rick starts drinking without stopping he tells Sam: - "You played for her, you can play for me. Play it!"
@KentHewittpiano886 жыл бұрын
That's correct, Sergio....but that has became the "catch phrase"...and that catch phrase helps to identify the film, the piano player, and the song. It was so significant that Woody Allen named one of his movies after that phrase.

The catch phrase is NOT play it again, Sam. Ingrid Bergman says: PLAY IT, Sam, for old time's sake. There is NO 'again' in the phrase.
@KentHewittpiano889 жыл бұрын
+Nessie Ness You are right, that is what SHE says, in the context of the film. However a "catch phrase", which is defined as a well-known sentence or phrase, Is PLAY IT AGAIN, Sam. That's how most people say it and remember it, even though it's a misquote. That phrase fits the definition of a catch phrase. Also that was the title of Woody Allen's 1972 film (which may be the reason that most people misquote Ingrid.) I can't count how many times people have come up to me while I was playing piano in a restaurant requesting this song and misquoted Ingrid, probably because it sounds better!. BTW, you're not the first person who's pointed that out to me.
