I built this rig to be able to handle a large variety of climates, but this is still the testing phase, and unfortunately it is not passing all the tests. Winter seemed to come out of nowhere this year, and it came with fury. Nights were starting to get below freezing, but waking up not only sub zero temperatures and snow, was an unexpected surprise. I am certainly not complaining, because these are all necessary tests for the rig, and I am actually quite happy to identify issues through temperatures and conditions that are still manageable. I thought that the rig would be able to go quite cold with an almost stock heating system, but unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. By the end of the first night, I woke up to a nice and toasty rig, but frozen pipes, which is a greater issue than a chilly living quarters. Frozen pipes quickly turn into busted pipes, and having just redone all of the plumbing, that is not an avenue I want to revisit this early in the new rig. Lucky for me nothing broke, and I have some awesome ideas on how to overcome these issues.
Outside of freezing pipes, the rig has done incredibly well, and most of the other concerns are basically just learning curves. The rig is 12,000 lbs, and with DRW that equates to some great traction. Add to that the 4 wheel drive and snowflake rated tires, she's ready to tackle any climb, but stopping is the number one concern. Cold temperatures, weight and good tires will get you surprisingly good traction, but once that traction breaks it is a different game entirely, and that is the game I am trying to learn.
This truck has drum brakes on the back and discs on the front, which is actually a very good combination, but that strong braking power up front can be a difficult balance while learning the capabilities and limitations to the setup. I am fortunate to be traveling some very remote locations, so I can really play with different speeds, turns and stops, without having to worry about traffic or any other human presence. As for the overall performance, I am very happy with the truck, and I don't think much needs to be changed. If I plan to do a specific northern winter trip, I will pick up a nice set of studded tires, but other than that I think it is just time behind the wheel to get a strong understanding of the performance in these challenging conditions.
Now, I think it is important to say, this is not an announcement of a winter break, this is just the close of the summer travel season. Winer is a period of time that I still have to find some consistent solutions for within the channel, but going into this one I think I have some really neat ideas that will bring a big variety of very exciting content. I don't want to say too much more, but I do want to say thank you! Thank you for enjoying the summer season, and thank you for enjoying the first season with the new rig. This was a lot of risk for me, and a big challenge, but I could not have possibly planned a better season. The channel growth was amazing, the stories were exciting and beautiful, and the rig held up to a far greater test than I had anticipated subjecting it to.
I am so excited about the future, and I am so happy to have you all along in the passenger seat.

I'll try and make this concise, here goes: The bison hang out along the road there because when they repopulated the area that is where they unloaded them from the transport trucks. So, to them, that is home base. The verges along the Alcan are kept groomed and wide so you can see animals that maybe approaching the road in time to slow down. The caribou are after the salt used on the roadway in winter, normally you'd not see them in summer at all. Back in the day both the road and the vehicles on it didn't have the engineering, range, etc that we do today. All those abandoned resorts, fuel stops, cafes had their day but most all traffic can drive faster, further now. Fun fact, caribou when they are wild, reindeer when they are a managed herd. Thanks for putting up with my Ted Talk.

they like the minerals from off the road dont have to dig in the hard ground maybe, dont know if they salt the roads way out away from towns but here in the states they now salt in almost every state even California cause people just dont slow down for bad weather

Every Saturday morning I start my day off the same way: wake up, eat breakfast with my daughter, turn on a cartoon for her and put on Destination Adventure for myself. Selfishly, I want every episode to be an hour long because your videography skills are second to none. Thanks for another great summer season. Looking forward to the winter edition... possibly a trip to Oregon?? It's a great state to explore!

About the abandonned hotels and resorts along the Alcan: They were all up and running until the early 90ies. Then, flights became cheaper as gas for driving cars up and down the Alcan. Another issue was the expensive fuel for their power supply by big generators, as most of those resorts are offgrid. I remember in the 80ies, they ran big Diesels 24/7

On the farm not that many years ago, we had been using for many years a D9 cat possibly the last working cat from the Alaska highway build. It was a monster. Cables not hydraulic, difficult to find strong cables for it. There was a old timer worked for Cat in Calgary that was helpful with repairs. He had worked on the same type of cat when young. We bought it for $5000 at an auction in 1980. It was big and heavy enough to have difficulty finding a rig that could move it.

Liard hot springs was the site of the worst black bear attack. 3 people died and a 4th was injured. It happened at the upper pool (now closed). If not for an American that had a gun, authorities believe the attack would've continued. There was nothing wrong with the bear. Good video Dustin.

I've only driven the Alcan twice. The first time back in '86 in the late spring, and then last December. Normally we take the Cassiar going both north and south, but last year we decided to head south on the Alcan. My husband was ahead in our 1-ton Dodge and I was following in my Matrix. It was dark by then and I came around a corner, so had slowed down, when a moose stepped out on to the road. I went to slow down further and just kept on going! Right into the ditch! Thankfully I went in slowly, but I was stuck. My dog didn't even wake up when we hit the ditch! lol! Thankfully, hubs noticed and stopped! But we were a long way from Fort Nelson and had to leave the car there. Truckers are great on the northern roads and always stop to make sure you are ok, which several did. Long story short, a tow truck rescued my car the next morning and brought it to Fort Nelson. $2000 tow bill! Thank goodness for BCAA! Looking forward to what's next!! Take care, Dustin-Sue

Thank you, Dustin. This is the first season of yours that I took weekly with you rather than binging the whole thing. It's been something special. The rig is great. The drone footage this year was your best. While so many will talk about Haida Gwaii, which was by far the most ambitious part of the year, my favorite thing was Bill and Jan living their best lives on the shore of Fishem Lake. I know you can't be lucky enough to come across people like that every week, but it was really inspiring to "meet" them, as it were. I look forward to what's in store. Wow, I enjoyed your travels this year, SO much! Going into the uncharted, unknown, largely undiscovered Chilcotin was so special. That is an area that very very few of us will ever be able to experience. And all your other adventures - Salmon Glacier, abandoned mine sites (still laugh about the bear in the RV!), the underground train, and of course all the beautiful ocean travels and Haida Gwaii. And to cap it all off, your drive down that Watson Lk to Ft Nelson stretch which to us, which was one of our most favourite parts of the Alaska Highway. We were SO unprepared for how incredibly beautiful and full of wildlife that stretch would be. And the hot springs.... Ahhhh.... Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life and travels. My Mother asked me ( when I was about 12) what the earliest thing I could remember was. I told her about about seeing a crane lifting a wrecked car from deep in a rocky creek bed, and a few other scenes. She told me that was from 1957 on the Alcan Hwy. It was ALL gravel back then. Only primitive gas stations every 200 - 300 miles or so. When you passed one, you stopped even if they were closed and waited until they opened next morning. We were from (Ft.) Beal AFB transferred to Elmandorf AFB. Alaska was not yet a state so we got extra time off to say good by to our family in Georgia. So we drove from North California to Atlanta,Ga and then from Atlanta to Anchorage.

Thanks Dustin. Two things. Regarding the bison. My dad about six years ago was driving through BC somewhere. He came across a herd of them, about 100 or so. He thought he raised the back truck windows up to keep his dog from jumping. Well, he actually lowered it. Next thing he sees is the Schnauzer's rear end running down the road toward the bison. The bison looked at Sam the dog, then continued to graze away. Sam wandered around in the herd for five minutes or so while my mom screamed for him. He got bored and trotted back to the truck. Next a question. How much is your fuel cost roughly per adventure? Or weekly/monthly. Diesel ain't cheap.

Thanks for taking us along for the summer 2023 Destination Adventures! This was an amazing video. Majestic mountains, fantastic rocky landscapes, beautiful Caribou and the thrill on ice! (I'd be a panic on those icy roads)... Question? The boat trailer does not slide at all on the ice? Looking forward to what's up next.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to wrap up the 2023 Summer Season travel just there Dustin, I mean, although it's only the beginning of November, you have to complete it somewhere right?! 🤣 (Loving the Caesars Chariot Wheel Spikes on your rigs wheels too - but they add weight to the end of summer idea eh?!) There's bits there where it felt like I was watching a David Attenborough Wildlife documentary - Definitely some epic video editing and creation going on there which is always a pleasure to watch 🥰 And is that a sneakie peak, might you be able to sneak your Grandpa out for some additional trips too? Fingers Crossed! And hey, what about your Dad, or all three Generations, that would be EPIC! 😉

Love the content. Killer cinematic section in the middle!!!!!! I was a theatre set installer for 10 years mostly on Princess, so when you talk about your time with them it always brings a smile to my face. Looking forward to what’s next.

OK....some of the most epic and beautiful scenery EVER. That was such a cool hot springs. Probably one of the neatest I've ever seen! I would travel all the way there just for that! Thanks again for taking us along.....just wow. I am very impressed with the vehicle. When you were on that ice and said you were in two wheel drive? We are all looking forward to what the future brings with these adventures. Thank you so much!!!!

I really look forward to your videos. Don't get me wrong, Manitoba winter is beautiful, but often it's just shoveling for me, with snowshoeing, and skating thrown in. It's nice to see a different view of winter. ❤ Your videos are awesome, thank you for sharing such wonderful things with us. (Also, I would have also been in the hot spring for several hours before sharing it)

Amazing nature in north Canada. Your Rigg has passed the test with flying colors. It's quite brave for you to make such trips alone in remote locations. Wish you all the best and safe trips.
